Indiana-Michigan was one hell of a game.

It was a surprisingly competitive week in the Big Ten. While the bottom two teams, Maryland and Purdue, turned their attentions to basketball the rest of the league had some pretty exciting games. Let's take a look back, starting with the nest game:

Michigan 48, Indiana 41 2OT

Holy crap was this a good game! Indiana is probably the nation's best 4-6 team. Sure, that doesn't get you much, but the following teams are winless in their Power Five conference right now:

Boston College

Kansas

Indiana

Maryland

Kansas State

Oregon State

That's the list. There is no question Indiana is better than those teams, but they simply cannot break through for whatever reason:

Welcome to another week in the life of Indiana football, known to the Internet over the past few years as #CHAOSTEAM. The Hoosiers had just struck fear in the hearts of the maize and blue only a couple minutes earlier, as Jordan Howard ran for 61 of 69 yards on a drive that eventually resulted in him scoring both a touchdown and a two-point conversion to give Indiana a 34-27 lead with under three minutes to go in a rollicking, back-and-forth game.

After even more chaos, with five seconds left, Michigan had a fourth-and-goal at the Indiana five yard-line. One stop and the Hoosiers win it. No problem right?

Haha, not a chance. You're in the alternate space-time continuum of #CHAOSTEAM, where nothing goes as planned for either IU or its opponent most Saturdays.

For Michigan, they stay alive for the Rose Bowl, but barely:

Michigan's defense has struggled at times on the road this year, but Saturday was flat out alarming and head scratching.

Ryan Glasgow missed Saturday's game (more on that injury shortly) and the defensive line was thin with Tom Strobel and Hank Poggi even getting reps today. Indiana's offensive tempo at times was relentless and they imposed their will in the run game. At one point, they nearly went a whole quarter without attempting a pass, it seemed like.

Ohio State 28, Illinois 3

Ohio State became the first team to win 30 straight conference regular season games ever. That's damned impressive no matter what:

Ohio State created scoring opportunities fairly easily, with 62% of their drives reaching at least the Illinois 40 yard line. But the Buckeyes averaged just 3.5 points per scoring opportunity (like they did last week as well). With two turnovers following an overturned-touchdown-turned-missed-field-goal, turnovers and penalties were devastating to the Buckeyes once they got within striking distance. Ohio State's explosive plays were typically not scoring plays themselves, so red zone inefficiency becomes even more vital.

After rolling Purdue, Illinois looked like Illinois again:

Even with Swiss Army knife Josh Ferguson in the lineup, this Illinois offense simply isn't that good. While the unit's numbers were boosted by a handful of big plays (Ferguson had a 27 yard rush and a 25 yard reception on a screen, Lunt hit Desmond Cain and Geronimo Allison for 36 and 38 yards, respectively) Ohio State's defense was really stifling. It all starts with Joey Bosa, the Buckeyes' star defensive end - any time the Buckeyes generated a pass rush, (which was often) Lunt was forced to scramble and usually threw the ball away. Lunt seemed out of sync for most of the day and there were multiple instances where he had throws to make into tight windows, only to miss the open target. Only a week ago seemingly nothing could go wrong, but this week the Illinois offense couldn't get much to go right.

Iowa 40, Minnesota 35

The Hawkeyes passed another important test, got their pig back, and now should be two easy wins away from an undefeated season. Even one more win sends them to Indianapolis:

Defensively, Minnesota made proper adjustments at halftime to slow Iowa's rush game and hold LeShun Daniels to 44 yards on 12 carries at one point for the half. That was until the above Vine happened. Iowa still finished with 510 yards of total offense including 276 yards rushing on the night. Daniels finished with 195 on 26 carries with 3TDs.

Minnesota now needs to win out to get to a bowl game and is a Purdue away from being winless in conference play:

For starters, let's just get it out of the way and make sure it is said. The Gophers didn't deserve to win with the way the defense played. The injuries have finally completely caught up to the defense and it showed. There were massive running lanes and wide open receivers all over the place. For those saying the injuries have been overblown, let this sink in for a moment. The Gophers have had 24 players combine to miss 94 games, including 14 starters who have missed a combined 55 games. It would be hard for any program to overcome that.

Michigan State 24, Maryland 7

Sparty has another dull win over a bad opponent:

MSU started the game with a starting secondary of Demetrious Cox-Grayson Miller-Montae Nicholson-Arjen Colquhoun at CB-S-S-CB but ended up playing much of the game with a Darian Hicks-Cox-Nicholson-Colquhoun configuration. I think the latter configuration probably has the highest ceiling of any remaining possible defensive backfield after the injuries to Vayante Copeland and R.J. Williamson; I have been pleasantly surprised by the competence of freshmen Grayson Miller and Khari Willis but Cox is clearly more comfortable as a safety (and Cox/Nicholson have more time practicing and playing together). If Nicholson can correct his tendency to take bad angles and give up long running plays, his athleticism could be a huge boost. Having Darian Hicks back helps tremendously.

On Maryland's side at least they now have some hope to win a Big Ten game:

The Terps are by no means guaranteed to defeat the Hoosiers, but they have to feel good about the fact that they're favored. It's been an extremely long season for Maryland and its fans, but going winless in the Big Ten would definitely make it worse. However, Indiana is no cupcake. That Michigan team Maryland lost to 28-0? The Hoosiers took those same Wolverines to overtime last week before suffering a 48-41 loss. Indiana doesn't have a Big Ten win this season either, and would become bowl-eligible with wins in its final two games, so the Hoosiers have more to play for than the Terps.

Nebraska 31, Rutgers 14

Thanks to the shock win over Michigan State the Cornhuskers can still get a bowl game if they beat Iowa, but that is a tall task:

This was a very good win for the Huskers. Not because they beat a mighty Rutgers team, but because they avoided a let down and went on the road and beat a team they were supposed to beat, something that didn't happen at Purdue. It's a very good win, because if we don't win we're sitting at 4-7 and we have to beat Iowa just to have a chance at a bowl game.

Rutgers is just bad at football and Kyle Flood is a dead coach walking:

With under a minute left in the 3rd quarter, Kyle Flood elected to try a fake punt. Nebraska was all over the play and stuffed it. It was actually comical how Nebraska knew exactly what play was being run. All 11 players were running to the same side of the field and the play went nowhere. Nebraska got the ball in Rutgers territory and kicked a field goal to give them a 31-14 lead in the 4th quarter.

Northwestern 21, Purdue 14

As we saw, the Wildcats tried to give the game away, but Purdue (and John Shoop) simply refused to take it:

This slight shift in scheme extended to the rest of the defense as well. After playing mostly base defense in the first half, Northwestern used much more of a nickel package throughout the second. This allowed the defense to have an extra defensive back on the field and for the linebackers to not get spread out as much.

After the adjustment, the defensive line then did their job in the run game. Even though they never really got pressure on the quarterback, they were able to seal holes and stop Purdue, even with only two linebackers behind them, enough to force the Boilermakers into difficult situations.

Once again, we let the cantankerous Boiled Sports have the floor:

After rolling up 55 on the Huskers two weeks ago, Purdue has seemingly forgotten how to score, totaling just 28 in the eight quarters since then. I picture John Shoop looking at his playsheet from the Nebraska game and just crumpling it up and throwing it away because he didn't like someone's posture during a timeout or something. "THIS WAS NOT PERFECT IN EVERY WAY AND THUS I DO NOT WANT TO EVER EXPERIENCE IT AGAIN."

Non-Conference Opponents:

Marshall 52, Florida International 0 - The Thundering Herd rolled on the 45th anniversary of their deadly plane crash.

Western Illinois 37, Indiana State 30 OT - The Trees drop to 4-6 with the loss.

Virginia Tech 23, Georgia Tech 21 - The Hokies are still alive for a bowl game in Frank Beamer's last season.

Bowling Green 41, Western Michigan 27 - The Falcons have now won 7 in a row and might be the best team we played outside the Big Ten. They also have more Big Ten wins this year than: Indiana, Purdue, Maryland, Rutgers, and Minnesota.

Let's keep finger pointing.

Earlier this week athletic director Morgan Burke made it clear that Darrell Hazell would return in 2016. Even though he is now 6-28, he inexplicably has job security. That we have to live with. If John Shoop returns, however, it will clearly be a middle finger from Morgan Burke to the remaining Purdue football fans.

Today was a complete indictment of how poor he is at his job. Gifted three turnovers, Purdue ran 12 plays and gained 22 yards for a total of one first down. Gifted a Northwestern offense that did little to nothing in the second half, partially because the Purdue defense was playing so well, Shoop did nothing. Purdue tied the game with a very good opening half drive, got the ball back with a defensive stop, and drove into field goal range where Paul Griggs missed a kick wide right with 5:22 left in the third quarter. Here are Purdue's drives, in a tie game, after that point:

3 plays, 0 yards

3 plays, 7 yards

3 plays, 5 yards

3 plays, 2 yards

Twice Purdue intercepted Northwestern to get the ball back, one of them at the Northwestern 41 yard line, but Purdue gained 14 yards in 12 plays over the final 20 minutes. This was after a decent first half by David Blough, where even his interception (which set up a touchdown) was not on him as it went off the hands of Danny Anthrop. Once Markell Jones went down with an injury the offense completely stopped.

What's more frustrating is that Purdue didn't have a single 3-and-out before that. It was moving the ball against a good defense and even made the extremely rare halftime adjustments to come down and tie the game out of the locker room. The defense did its part with the turnovers, but Purdue could not take advantage. On the game's critical play with 4:37 left and Purdue trailing 21-14 the Boilers needed 10 yards on 3rd and 10 from the 25 yard line.

They gained 2 yards.

Yes, on third and 10 with the game on the line our play was a 2 yard crossing route to Domonique Young. If you're a 2-7 team, already trailing, and you haven't had a first down in 15 minutes, WHY THE HELL DO YOU NOT HAVE EVERY RECEIVER AT LEAST RUN TO THE STICKS?!?!?!?!?! The worst case scenario is an interception that clinches the game we were already losing. At least go down swinging. I understand that Young was a check down there, but criminy, why run a two yard route at all?

Then, as if to not be undone, we swathe surrender punt. Joe Schopper had struggled all day and was kicking into the wind, so he only got off a 24 yard kick. Hazell, who said we were going to stay aggressive after the Nebraska win, had the perfect chance to show he was at least going to go down swinging, but with only two timeouts he surrender punted and Purdue did not touch the ball again.

This was a winnable game. Juan and I felt it, and that's what makes it more aggravating. Poor coaching gets you blown out by Illinois at home. Poor coaching loses games like this where the opposition is trying to hand you the game. There was a surprisingly large Purdue contingent and even the Ross-Ade Brigade had a nice section in front of us. The whole team felt flat though for most of the game. I went down with my son as they came on the field and they had almost no energy. Only Frankie Williams was trying to get them going, and even then it seemed like they were giving him half-hearted responses. This isn't exactly rowdy:

Mercifully, the season will be over in two weeks, and the only hope left is to win the Bucket and ruin Indiana's season in the process. IU will likely beat Maryland next week, meaning they are playing for a rare bowl game and to become the first Hoosier team in 68 years to win three straight Bucket games. Purdue has a chance to spoil that, but does it really mean anything? The real change will come the following Monday, when John Shoop is hopefully shown the door.

Despite playing better than Northwestern for much of the game, Purdue again settles for a moral victory.

This loss is on the offense. The Purdue defense played well enough to win. The Purdue defense forced three turnovers, including two in Northwestern territory, that resulted in exactly 0 Purdue points. Purdue wasn't even close on any of them either. Three and outs are the new thing ya'll! I honestly don't know what John Shoop is doing. The guy honestly called a pretty good first quarter and first drive of the third quarter but after that absolutely nothing. I can't wrap my head around what the guy is thinking the majority of the time. Everyone who isn't affiliated with Purdue or the Bears talks about Shoop as this mad scientist evil genius of an offensive mind. I just don't see it and I never have. My only thought is that maybe Shoop truly is a genius and that he just overthinks everything. I have no other explanation.

The game started out in typical Purdue fashion by allowing the timid and sad Northwestern offense to drive down and score with little to no resistance and just like that boom 7-0. At this point I was ready to move on with my day but alas Purdue had other ideas. David Blough headed to the field for Purdue's first offense positions and, thanks to a nifty double move, hit Domonique Young for a 68 yard touchdown pass. For those that were curious Young had 60 yards on the season going into today. The one thing I can say about the offense today is that they certainly spread the ball around to a lot of different receivers. Purdue had 10 receivers catch a pass today with many of those folks coming from the back of the bench or Hazell's doghouse or wherever he's been keeping them.

Purdue allowed one more touchdown in the first half and went into halftime down 14-7. Northwestern was able to capitalize off of a tipped passed from Blough to grab an INT and turn it into seven points. Purdue had a chance to tie it with a long bomb to the endzone to end the half thanks to a bonehead timeout by Northwestern but alas it wasn't to be. Purdue's first drive in the third quarter was a thing of beauty. It was the last thing of beauty this Purdue offense would do all day. Purdue went 71 yards on 7 plays capped off by a Markell Jones two yard touchdown run. It really shows you what this offense is capable of when firing on all cylinders. Unfortunately, Shoop's beard clogs up a lot of those cylinders preventing the offense from truly playing to their potential. It also doesn't help that Markell Jones got injured in the second half and would not return. No word yet on his status.

The Purdue offense wasted numerous possessions with three and outs and absolutely threw away the three turnovers the defense grabbed. They looked incompetent at times and just dumbfounded at other times. On the last drive of the game Purdue needed a third and seven so their plan was apparently to run a two yard drag over the middle and hope the receiver makes the play. That's not going to happen the majority of the time. Purdue wasting so many possessions gave Northwestern the many chances they needed to score just one more time and put the game entirely out of reach. The Purdue defense struggled on Northwestern's final TD drive. They allowed the QB to scramble for a 16 yard run on 3rd and 14 with the game tied 14-14. Really not a great effort there.

At the end of the day I'm sure we will be told this team is moving in a direction and that a corner is ready to be turned. I'm not sure what direction, or where this corner is but apparently Purdue is getting close. Purdue now sits at 2-8 and Darrel Hazell has still not won a game in the month of November.

My only friend the end...

After last week when we were just bristling with excitement and optimism everyone but Juan picked Purdue to win. This week things have changed. Drastically changed. Read on to see the doom and gloom if you must but also just remember that Purdue basketball starts in just seven hours!

T-Mill Says

Juan and I will be braving Evanston to see the desiccated carcass of Purdue football. It should be interesting, especially since I will be in Miami next week instead of my original planned trip to Iowa. Dodged a bullet there. Juan promised to bring me some beer that I can't buy in Indiana, so that alone makes the trip worth it. As for the football, Purdue should have a chance because Northwestern's offense is not very good. Their defense is excellent, however. Maybe Markell Jones will break a big run, maybe not. I expect punts and lots of them. Northwestern 24, Purdue 7

Andrew Holmes Says

My optimism has been used up for the season and mercifully basketball season has arrived to save us all. Prediction:

Juan Says

Part of me thought of starting this prediction sarcastically, acting like it was the prediction for the basketball game as the season starts tonight. Sadly (but probably good for you), I avoided that route as not even basketball will lift my spirits watching this game from the cold stands of Ryan Field tomorrow.

At the end of the day: Northwestern=Good. Purdue=Bad. And Morgan Burke is thinking this:

Northwestern 38, Purdue 7

Rachel Says

Another week, another chance to make a mediocre offense look like the No. 1 offense in the country. Unlike other road games this season Purdue will not keep this one close. Northwestern won't waste any time getting on the board and I expect we'll go into the second half with no points on the board. Purdue 7, Northwestern 38

Jumbo Heroes Says

If you've paid attention to what I've written after games this season and specifically the end of my post last week following the Illinois game you should probably have an idea of how this post is going to go. Purdue is not a good football team. They are less consistent than a broken clock. They are quite possibly the most maddening football team I've ever watched. There's no consistent from game to game, there's not even consistency from quarter to quarter. Hell, there isn't even consistency from drive to drive which is just maddening.

In my admittedly short life (just 29 years) I don't think I've seen a worse three year span of Purdue football. The thing that drives me mad is that there is talent on this team. Jones and Knox are good running backs. Yancey and Anthrop are good receivers. There just doesn't seem any cohesive plan to put everyone in the best situation to succeed. I just can't understand it. I don't anticipate the Purdue offense lighting up this Northwestern defense. Northwestern 24, Purdue 7

Staff Results After Last Week
T-Mill: 5-4
Juan: 7-2
Andrew Holmes: 2-5
Jumbo Heroes: 5-4

No Pick Last Week
Casey: 5-1
Rachel: 3-2
Rob St. Claire: 2-1
Craig: 2-3
Drew Schneider: 0-4

We're almost to the end, kids.

We're almost two the end, kids. In two weeks the losing will be over, Darrell Hazell will accomplish history by becoming the first Purdue coach in 68 years to lose the Bucket three straight times, and we can stuff football away safely where Morgan Burke wants to stuff it. At least we now have basketball to ease the suffering.

A victory by the Buckeyes would give them the longest regular season winning streak in conference play across all of college football. Amazingly, Urban Meyer has NEVER lost a Big Ten regular season game. This week we will likely see Illinois go back to being Illinois instead of the rolling juggernaut they were last week. Ohio State 38, Illinois 14

Maryland (2-7, 0-5) at Michigan State (8-1, 4-1) Noon, ESPN2

Testudo Times Preview

The Only Colors Preview

The Terrapins are a dead team walking. They have some hope for one more win by getting Indiana and Rutgers in the last two weeks, but they are the only team in Big Ten play that has played worse than Purdue. Meanwhile, Michigan State is probably pissed off about last week and out for blood. They still control their destiny to win the Big Ten and have a huge game at Ohio State next week. Michigan State 41, Maryland 10

Purdue (2-7, 1-4) at Northwestern (7-2, 3-2) Noon, BTN

InsideNU Preview

Two lousy offenses here, but at least Northwestern has a good defense. Juan and I will be in Evanston, but I am not sure why. After Hazell got his vote of confidence last night I hope it means something to this team, but I doubt it. We're just a terrible team that has lucked into a win because we faced a walk-on quarterback that had a meltdown. Northwestern 24, Purdue 7

Nebraska (4-6, 2-4) at Rutgers (3-6, 1-5) 3:30pm, BTN

Corn Nation Preview

On the Banks Preview

This is essentially a loser leaves town match. The winner can still get to a bowl game, though Nebraska has the harder path with Iowa at the end. Rutgers still has Army and Maryland. The loser has seven losses and will join Maryland and Purdue on the bench. At least last week Nebraska showed a little something. If you look at On the Banks they are in Dead Coach Walking mode like Purdue is. Nebraska 31, Rutgers 24

Michigan (7-2, 4-1) at Indiana (4-5, 0-5) 3:30pm, ABC/ESPN2

Maize N' Brew Preview

Crimson Quarry Preview

This is an interesting game because Indiana is genuinely good for three quarters, then folds at the end. They can definitely give Michigan a game, but the Wolverines have one of the best defenses in America. That is going to be the difference here. Michigan can get key stops while Indiana cannot. Michigan 27, Indiana 17

Minnesota (4-5, 1-4) at Iowa (9-0, 5-0) 8pm, BTN

The Daily Gopher Preview

Black Heart Gold Pants Preview

It's the Floyd game! The Gophers need a victory to keep some bowl hopes alive, while Iowa has its eyes on a trip to Indianapolis and maybe the playoff. At this point they are likely winning the West because they would have to drop two of three to Minnesota, Purdue, and Nebraska, which is not happening, especially if they win this game. Iowa 24, Minnesota 17
