Rob Henry was pretty bad on Saturday at Cincinnati, but does that mean he should lose the starting job?

The final score of 42-7 was far from pretty, but perhaps the ugliest number I remember was 88. As I sat in Nippert Stadium Saturday afternoon sweating more than Tom Crean in a tanning booth while watching a zone defense the number 88 was plastered on Purdue's side of the scoreboard for far too long. The significance? That was Purdue's total offensive yardage for far too long in the game.

With 3:53 left in the third quarter Purdue finally went over 100 yards of total offense when Gabe Holmes caught a 17 yard pass from Rob Henry for a first down. It immediately went back under when Gary Bush caught a pass and lost eight yards, then Henry fumbled a snap and lost another yard. A 16-yard pass to Dalyn Dawkins put Purdue back over 100, but for much of the day the Cincinnati defense was impressive.

Purdue had 88 yards at halftime, but was stuck there forever after going 3-and-out with three incompletions after the Bearcats scored on the first possession of the second half, then stayed there when Henyr was pick-sixed by Adrian Witty on his next pass, followed by a lost fumble by Akeem Hunt on the next offensive play.

To make matters worse, 54 of those 88 yards were earned on Purdue's opening drive that failed to put points on the board. The teams traded interceptions on the play, but it looked like Henry was going to have the offense moving by taking them from the 25 down to the Cincinnati 5 before losing 17 yards on three first and goal plays before missing a field goal. On this drive Henry was decent. He had a 27 yard pass to DeAngelo Yancey, a six yard keeper run on a first down, and an end-around handoff to B.J. Knauf for nine yards.

That was unfortunately the best drive of the day for him. Yes, he had a seven yard TD, but Henry was generally terrible. His offensive line did him no favors, but Henry was only 18 of 35 for 161 yards and two interceptions. The first was a tipped pass, but the second was an awful throw over the middle picked off by Witty and returned for a backbreaking score. Worst off all, the offense could not generate an answer and allowed the defense to wilt in the heat.

Henry's performance led many on Twitter and other fans forums to call for his benching, while Henry himself recognized that his play was awful. There was even a fan post here ate the site stating that Hazell needing to "make the tough decision NOW" and bench Henry, like he was a sickly old family pet that was throwing up on the rug.

It is still early, however. What we saw on Saturday was about the worst possible game we could have gotten from a quarterback compounded by a poor offensive line performance. Henry supporters mentioned that he is a senior leader that is in a spot on a team that has lacked discipline for years. Henry detractors use the overwhelming evidence that, well, he was awful on Saturday.

I tend to think it was a combination of things. First of all, the Cincinnati defense is really, really good. They created pressure and closed down Purdue's running game. Purdue needed to move the ball consistently on the ground and at least play a close game by pounding on Cincy's front line. Once Purdue fell behind thanks to the defensive stop that was halftime, Purdue had to drastically change its game plan and Henry had four of his worst throws of the day on the three incompletions and the pick six.

Credit to the Cincinnati defense also needs to be given. Last season they only gave up 18.5 points per game and just 135 yards per game on the ground. That was just 3.8 yards per carry, and they looked even better. They also had an experienced offense run by a dynamic quarterback that got a lot better in Munchie Legaux. Henry had Purdue in the game for a half and was derailed by a disastrous third quarter.

For now, Henry is going to be the starter and he should be. He earned it in an honest competition over the last several months and I feel only Austin Appleby, after Danny Etling struggled in fall practice, might challenge him. If Henry struggles against an FCS defense that just gave up 73 points, then we should be very concerned. This is a week for him to gain confidence again and prepare for a much better opponent in Notre Dame.

Not many people expect Purdue to beat Notre Dame anyway, so I think he hangs onto the job at least until then. If he improves, Purdue should be fine and we can chalk up the Cincinnati result as a bad game against a very good team. If he struggles these next two weeks then it is probably time to look elsewhere.

The Big Ten went 10-2, but didn't look especially dominant in doing so.

That could have gone better.

The first week of Big Ten football is complete and the conference did not get the elusive 12-0 week. We can thank Purdue and Iowa for that one. A 10-2 week was still good considering few teams played anyone of consequence. There were no major upsets and the two likeliest losses were exactly that: losses.

Let's look back at all 12 games from around SB Nation in order of most impressive team to least impressive:

Michigan 59, Central Michigan 9

While some teams were pushed, Michigan took control early and never let up. The Wolverines started off with a blocked punt returned for a score by Joe Reynolds and the rout was on. They only gave up three field goals.

Maize N' Brew was primarily concerned with two interceptions thrown by Devin Gardner:

Michigan fans came into the Central Michigan contest expecting to see a much-improved Devin Gardner, but that didn't seem to be the case-at least at first. Gardner threw an incomplete pass toward Devin Funchess, then misread a simple coverage and threw directly into the hands of a Chippewa corner.

Wisconsin 45, Massachusetts 0

Melvin Gordon, Corey Clement, and James White each rushed for 100 yards as the Badgers did what they always do: run the ball down hapless team's throats. Defensive Wisconsin gave up barely over 200 yards. As Bucky's 5th Quarter states, the offensive line was a big reasons the Badgers were able to get things going:

But the most impressive guy in the running game was Ryan Groy. The Badgers were routinely going left behind big ol' No. 79 and Tyler Marz to start, and then on the two long touchdown runs right, Groy perfectly executed a pull and seal from his left guard position to open up monster holes for White and Gordon.

Northwestern 44, California 30

Heading out to the west coast for a late kickoff against a Pac-12 team is always a dicey proposition from the Big Ten. Time zones and jet lag can not only affect you out there, but the week after. Collin Ellis not only had one pick-six, but two as the Wildcats were able to pick up a nice true road win, which was the only one of the week for the league.

Sippin' On Purple was pleased as this all came without Kain Colter and Venric Mark:

We saw life without Kain Colter and Venric Mark, and it was...OK, I guess. Those guys are obviously very talented players, and Northwestern is better with them on the field; the Trevor Siemian-Treyvon Green backfield, though, was able to move the ball reasonably well.

Indiana 73, Indiana State 35

Thursday night you would have thought that Bobby Knight had returned with Calbert Cheaney in Bloomington. Twitter was abuzz as the Hoosiers blasted the Sycamores and IU fans began to care about their own football team again instead of Notre Dame.

IU was impressive offensively, but the defense has to be a concern. Shakir Bell ran for 100 yards with ease before injuring his shoulder. He is likely out for the game against Purdue. IU also let the Trees back in it with three touchdowns in about a minute of game play before turning the offense back up. They went with the Danny Hope plan as three quarterbacks played extensively. As expected, Indiana will only be as good as its defense because the offense is fine:

Well that went about as good as one could hope. The Hoosiers came out firing and pretty easily scored at will, no matter who was on the field. We finally figured out who was the starting quarterback, kinda, and we now have a little better idea of what kind of defense we'll be seeing this year. Plenty of players got to see the field and the reps were very valuable to the coaching staff to know who's capable of what going into stiffer competition.

Michigan State 26, Western Michigan 13

The Spartans are pretty much the opposite of Indiana. The defense is lights out and contributed 14 of their 26 points. The offense... not so much. The Michigan State defense and Indiana offense combined would be the best team in the country. The MSU offense and IU defense might go 0-12.

As expected, The Only Colors is very concerned:

The whole purpose of the offensive staff shuffling and quarterback and position battles were to avoid a repeat of 2012. One game in, and things have gotten even worse - markedly.

Minnesota 51, UNLV 23

It looked like things were going to be a bit of a disaster early on, but Philip Nelson ran for two scores as the Golden Gophers took care of business against a pretty bad UNLV team. Minnesota scored touchdowns via run, pass, interception return, kickoff return, and blocked punt return. That made for a happy Daily Gopher:

UNLV was able to move the ball racking up 419 yards of total offense, but it took a LOT of plays (85) and finished with a 4.9 per play average. Their first two offensive touchdowns were breakdowns on the defense but for the most part the Gopher D kept things in front of them and waited for their opportunities. A total of 9 pass breakups, 9 tackles for losses, 1 sack, 2 interceptions and a touchdown scored.

Penn State 23, Syracuse 17

The Nittany Lions were involved in a neutral site game and responded well to a challenge from Syracuse. Christian Hackenberg threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns, but the defense sealed the day with a late stop as Syracuse had a chance to win with a final drive. Black Shoe Diaries was pretty pleased with the debut of the true freshman:

The kid can sling it. And with BOB coaching him, we don't have to worry about Hackenberg getting a big head. Asked to describe the beauty of the deep ball Hack completed to Geno Lewis for 54 yards and a score, BOB beat down the beat reporter. "Let's not waltz him into the College Football Hall of Fame, here. All he did was throw the ball - he's on scholarship for that."

Ohio State 40, Buffalo 20

The Buckeyes won, but were hardly impressive as this game was much closer than many expected. Jordan Hall had 159 yards rushing and two touchdowns, but Braxton Miller was pick-sixed and Buffalo hung around much longer than expected. Land-Grant Holyland was relatively pleased overall:

Despite the unbelievable high expectations, there are plenty of great takeaways for these Buckeyes. The defense held the Bulls to 3-14 on third down, and only 240 yards on the day, a good portion of that while the injury bug was biting. Jordan Hall could end up being the most important cog in the offense, after his impressive display of between-the-tackles and open-field running. And Miller has certainly improved his arm, and still has an incredibly high ceiling.

Nebraska 37, Wyoming 34

Joe Tiller's old team nearly sprung a surprise on the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, but came up only three points short. Brett Smith threw for 383 yards and four touchdowns, which was lousy defense according to Corn Nation:

Other than the 2008 Oklahoma game against a team that had one of the most prolific offenses in modern college football history and played Florida for the National Championship, all of these games have something in common. They happened in 2007, or within the last year. Perhaps most distressing is the fact that the last three games Nebraska has played are on these charts.

Northern Illinois 30, Iowa 27

NIU finished what it started last year by finally knocking off the Hawkeyes in Iowa City. Jordan Lynch was much better this season with 275 yards and three touchdowns, but led two drive for 10 points in the final six minutes to get the win. It was all doom and gloom as expected at Black Heart Gold Pants:

For a while, things were different. For a while, the Iowa offense looked not just competent, but dangerous. For a while, the Iowa defense was actually able to shut down Jordan Lynch and the Northern Illinois offense. For a while.

Unfortunately, "for a while" is not the entire game and ultimately things weren't different enough in this game for Iowa to get a different result than the result that we saw again and again and again last year.

Cincinnati 42, Purdue 7

Yeah, it was bad. Purdue's offense was completely out of sync in all facets. The defense wilted in the heat and third down conversions were a major issue. Special teams set up the only touchdown on a booming punt by Cody Webster, but Paul Griggs also missed a field goal. Down the Drive saw a lot of good from a very good Bearcats team:

This game was simultaneously a dominating win, and a sloppy performance. Whatever questions existed about the potential ceiling of this team should be answered. UC is perfectly capable of running the table going into the season ending game with Louisville. I am not predicting that, but it is clearly on the table because this team is only going to get better.

Illinois 42, Southern Illinois 34

The Fighting Illini may have won, but they nearly crapped the bed in a game against an FCS team. Nathan Scheelhaase threw for over 400 yards, but the Salukis scored the last 10 points of the game and were first and goal in the final minute away from potentially tying the game with a TD and a deuce. The Champaign Room thinks that things did not get better for Tim Beckman, especially with tough non-conference games against Cincinnati and Washington coming up:

Did you know that this is the first Day After column I've written here at The Champaign Room that follows an Illinois win? It is. The Champaign Room didn't make its debut until late October last season when the Illini were already in the midst of their nine-game losing streak to finish the season.

So, here I am, writing my first post-victory football recap, and yet for some reason I still feel as though the Illini are coming off a loss. I guess that sums up life as an Illini football fan pretty well.

Purdue has a much further way to go than originally thought.

I was not alone in having a very positive attitude going into today's game. All of the players were saying the right things and the new coaching regime had installed a new attitude. Yesterday's large gathering on Monument Circle made me feel even better about today. I thought we would have a very pleasant surprise, and for about 10 minutes we were right.

Purdue only gained 88 yards in the first two and a half quarters, but 54 of those 88 came in the first 10 minutes. B.J. Knauf gave Purdue a different look with an end-around run and the Boilers gained a fist down before Nick Temple intercepted a Rob Henry pass. We didn't have long to feel bad, as the very next play Ryan Isaac got his first career interception on a Munchie Legaux pass that was tipped at the line. The march continued from the same spot and Purdue got all the way down to the five. After Rob Henry sneak.

This is the first major thing that went wrong. Things were going well and on a hot afternoon Purdue kept the Bearcats' defense on the field for 10 minutes of game time. Unfortunately, a stuffed run, a penalty, a sack by Silberry Mouhon, and another negative play pushed Purdue back 17 yards Paul Griggs missed a field goal, and Purdue's 10 minute possession around the interceptions got zero points.

It was a microcosm of how the day would go offensively. One good thing would be followed by three bad things. After this opening 10 minute sequence Purdue would struggle to move the ball the rest of the day until down several scores. There would be false starts, fumbled snaps, missed routes, and overthrown passes that all contributed to a struggle to move even 10 yards.

At least things were promising though to start. Then Cincinnati's offense got its first full possession, which was a 14 play march where they converted three straight third down opportunities. Things stayed even for a few possessions before Cody Webster's booming 73 yard punt was muffed and about 27 different guys had a chance to recovery it for each side. Jesse Schmitt, the long snapper, hustled downfield and eventually recovered it, setting up Purdue's only score on a nice read by Henry.

Unfortunately, this would be the highlight of the day. Legaux burned Purdue for a 32 yard run as a 7 play, 75 yard drive gave Cincy a 14-7 lead when Blake Annen caught a Legaux pass from 15 yards out with 17 seconds left in the half. This was doubly painful because the Bearcats were able to use halftime like a defensive stop.

Down only seven at the half was a good position even if it could have been tied or down four based on Purdue first empty possession. Purdue needed a stop and the key play of the game came on 3rd and 9 at the Cincy 44. Legaux was able to scan the field and found Max Morrison over the middle for a 40 yard gain. If Purdue stops this play, the entire game may be different. It prevents Cincinnati from scoring on its opening possession of the half and maybe Purdue can settle in with the power run game coach Hazell wants.

Instead, RD Abernathy scored five plays later. It was 21-7 and Purdue had the football for all of one play after tying it at 7-7. Now all the momentum was in Cincinnati's favor and Purdue was going to have to come from behind against a defense that was playing extremely well. Purdue went three-and-out, got a stop, then Henry was pick-sixed by Adrian Witty on an awful throw. Just two plays after that Akeem Hunt fumbled, only to be bailed out by a Frankie Williams interception.

At that point there was only 3:53 left in the third quarter. It was 28-7 and Purdue had only 88 yards of offense. The game was pretty much over because Purdue was both out of sync entirely and the Cincy D was stopping everything. Henry looked awful as he was missing badly on throws and fumbling multiple snaps.

The two fourth quarter touchdowns did nothing but make the final score look worse. In reality, it was over when that 3d and nine was converted by the Bearcats. Up until then Purdue hadn't played well, but it was at least in the hunt. When you look at the box score Purdue only lost the turnover battle by one, but it allowed Cincinnati to convert 60% of its third downs and Henry did most of his work long after the game was decided. Purdue's running game was also pretty bad. Akeem Hunt never had a chance to show what he can do, but part of that was due to a really good Cincinnati run defense.

So are there positives that we can take away from this? It pretty much was the worst case scenario. Henry himself was disgusted with his play:

This is why I have to look forward. We never saw that from the old regime. We only heard about how wonderful practice was. Hope's teams often quit too, but Purdue was at least in the game to start the second half and kept fighting. They just dug a hole against a better team today. If Purdue scores on that opening drive or gets that key 3rd and nine stop who knows how that changes things.

Those things went against Purdue, however, and all we can do is move forward now. We will beat Indiana State quite easily and the next chance at serious redemption will come against Notre Dame in two weeks. The Boilers have to get a lot better in that time, but if things get in sync offensively that will allow things to go a long way. I believe the defense wilted in the heat today, mostly because the offense did nothing to move the ball and keep them on the sideline resting.

Still, there were missed assignments and the linebackers were once again a deficiency. Purdue's best defense might honestly be a strong running game that melts the clock and keeps the ball away from opponents. That running game never got going today and Cincinnati was too good by making Purdue pay for its defensive miscues.

I did like what I saw from several freshmen today. Knauf looks shifty in space. Dalyn Dawkins had the look of being a very promising player. DeAngelo Yancey had a nice 27 yard catch.

I would also be remiss if I did not give proper credit to Cincinnati as a team and its fans. they played a great game and have a very solid defense, which played a large role on Purdue's struggles. The fans were also extremely friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, that does little to erase Purdue worst non-conference, non-Notre Dame loss since losing at the Miami Hurricanes 35-0 in 1983.

Unfortunately, the two main players that Purdue needs to click on offense, Henry and Hunt, were pretty bad. Hunt had only eight touches and 26 yards when he averaged over 10 yards per touch in his career. Henry probably could not have played worse with his struggles on exchanges and poor throws. He is our guy going forward, however, and he earned the starting job. Today may have simply been a very bad day.

We'll know more next week. Indiana State is likely without Shakir Bell and because of that, they lost their best shot of pulling the upset. They also gave up 73 points to Indiana. I don't expect to score 73, but I do expect a comfortable win where Purdue works some things out and executes what did not work this week. From there, we simply get better. This is just the first step and it shows we have a longer way to go than we thought.

Remember: The road to the 2000 Rose Bowl started with an ugly 1997 opening loss at a MAC school.

The Boilers lose 42-7 to the Bearcats at Nippert Stadium.

The Darrell Hazell Era kicked off earlier today in Cincinnati, and it didn't exactly go as hoped.

Now I picked the Boilers to beat the Bearcats earlier today, but did I actually think it would happen? Or was I just riding a wave of optimism? This was the first game under the watch of a man that many think has the chance to take Purdue to the heights we saw during Joe Tiller's best years, and those heights are still attainable. But after today, Purdue still sits on the runway, not ready to leave the ground just yet.

The problems we saw out on the field today were the problems we expected to see. The line is weak and pass protection is a problem. The linebacker play still leaves a lot to be desired. We don't know if Henry can throw and the team still has the discipline problems that plagued them throughout the Hope Era.

However what is even more disappointing is that the areas we thought were strengths looked like anything but today. Akeem Hunt carried the ball 7 times for 21 yards. The corners got beat and the defensive linemen got worked to the tune of 220+ yards rushing. Our best play today was a punt (a beautiful 73 yard punt at that, Cody Webster).

It is nice to have some stability at the quarterback position, but Rob Henry didn't do much to curb the worries of Boilers fans today. To be fair to Rob, I don't think Coach Hazell helped him out much either today. Part of the reason Henry has value is because he can run. If you're not going to utilize his legs in the running game, play someone with a better arm. The read option is Henry's strength. When it was run, the Boilers got results (first TD of the day). Yet Henry ended today's game with 6 carries for 4 yards. Henry doesn't have a Big Ten arm. He doesn't have the arm strength to zip it in and his passes have too much air. His 3rd quarter pick-six was something you'd see on a Thursday night at the intramural fields where people are reliving their mediocre high school careers, already planning for the night's after-party. Henry is a great guy and a great leader, but his arm is not his strength. Hazell picked his man and he needs to stay with Henry, but you have to play to the strengths of your players.

Discipline was once again a problem; something that fans had hoped would follow Hope out the door. Delay of game penalties, fumbles, missed assignments. This can all be summed up in Purdue's second drive of the game, a drive that lasted seven minutes and saw Purdue convert a 4th and 1 at the Cincy 7. I felt a sense of excitement and optimism as Hazell trotted out his offense for the short conversion, showing confidence in the guys he had on the field. Hope would have had his FG unit on the field during the review. Finally...change! Then the offense proceeded to rush for a loss, fumble the ball on a sack, receive a delay of game penalty, pass the ball for a loss, and then shank a 39 yard field goal. Optimism slowly faded from there, and here we sit, with the Bearcats sending the Boilermakers back to West Lafayette with a 42-7 loss.

One game doesn't define a season. It doesn't really define anything. But it sure would have been nice to see some of that optimism we all had pay off in the first game. Purdue will continue to improve under Hazell; you can't instill your values on a group of 85 college age kids in half a year and culture doesn't change overnight. Hazell will rally the troops for next week's game against Indiana State, and until then they'll continue to build back up one brick at a time.

I have to admit that this is about as excited as I have been for an opener in some time. The players have been very positive on Twitter and yesterday's tailgate event on the Circle was very exciting. There is some major positive energy behind this team and I hope it keeps going today.

As before, the staff of Hammer & rails offers its predictions for This year's games.

It has been a good day. It is the first college colors day with my son, who was repping the Gold and black as he went off to ay care. The first Boilermaker Circle Tailgate was a rousing success as well with several thousand Purdue fans on the circle in downtown Indianapolis taking it all in. Here are a couple of pictures:

T-Mill: What else can really be said about this game? Purdue is a 10.5 point underdog on the road against a really good team, but has a lot of positive momentum that discipline issues left over after the Hope Era have been cleaned up. I am honestly not sure what to expect. A 200 yard, 3 TD game from Akeem Hunt? Sure. Rob Henry throws four interceptions? Yeah, could happen. Cincinnati wins in a blowout, dashing Purdue's hopes for a quick turnaround? Yeah. Purdue coming out focused, disciplined, and sharp on its way to an easy win and a 9-3 season? Wouldn't shock me.

What I want to see most of all is a competitive team that doesn't make the same mistakes that we dealt with for four years under Danny Hope. I am talking about dumb penalties, missed assignments, missed blocks, and turnovers. That was the biggest struggle for Hope's teams. They always shot themselves in the foot. I want to see a game that is competitive and Purdue at least has a chance to win in the fourth quarter.

I do have a good feeling, however, and I think we're going to surprise some people. Purdue 27, Cincinnati 24

Juan Crespo:

Okay, looks like I am not completely done with Hammer and Rails since T-Mill asked me to write at prediction as "Author Emeritus" (which sounds pretty cool. Then again, the word Emeritus is pretty bad ass). Anyway, I am required to hate Cincinnati. I once lived in Oxford, Ohio for a few years and my sister went to The Miami University as well. Ergo, you could consider me a Miami fan, so Screw You Cincy!

With both teams debuting new coaches, it is kind of hard to tell how these teams will play. That being said, I think that Cincy will come out to a fast start in front of the home crowd, and I wouldn't be surprised if they take a 2 TD lead. But I think Hazell's squad will make a strong comeback in the latter half of the game, maybe even retake the lead, but Cincy will take over at the end and put the Boilers away in the 4th quarter. Despite the loss, the Boilers will show a lot of potential in this game and will have many things to build off of for the rest of the season.

Purdue: 30, Cincinnati: 40

Someone always ruins the rare 12-0 week in non-conference play for the B1G. Will it happen this week?

Sure, it is only Indiana and Minnesota playing in games in which they are heavily favored, but Big Ten football begins anew TONIGHT! Purdue fans can have a keen eye on this week's games because future non-conference opponents Indiana State (at Indiana) and Northern Illinois (at Iowa) play Big Ten opponents. Only Notre Dame is not in action against a Big Ten team, as they host Temple.

Will the conference get a 12-0 week? The league should have little trouble in about nine of the games. Purdue has a tough game at Cincinnati as the most likely loss to be honest. Iowa-NIU, Northwestern-Cal, and sadly Southern Illinois-Illinois could all be close.

As a reminder, tomorrow from 11:30am-1:30pm on Monument Circle we have the Boilermaker Circle Tailgate. I think I may even try to attend.

Let's kick it off tonight!

Thursday

Indiana State (0-0) at Indiana (0-0) 7pm Big Ten Network

Crimson Quarry Preview

Our first taste of Big Ten football this year is the Hoosiers, who are expected to have an excellent offense. In fact, the offense is good enough that even if the defense can get to mediocre IU can win a lot of football games. The only thing that may derail it would be a Hope-like quarterback controversy.

Uh oh. IU can't decide between Tre Roberson, Cameron Coffman, and Nate Sudfeld according to Crimson Quarry.

Well, that aside, this is not the automatic win it is for most Big Ten teams over FCS teams. Indiana State has Shakir Bell, who ran for 192 yards last season as the Sycamores made IU sweat out a 24-17 win. The Trees are under a new coach, but this is a team that has come a very long way. Indiana should win, but the Trees will probably stick around for at least a half tonight. Indiana 38, Indiana State 21

UNLV (0-0) at Minnesota (0-0) 7pm Big Ten Network

The Daily Gopher Preview

The Golden Gophers have themselves a pretty easy home opener tonight. It is probably easier than Indiana State having Indiana. UNLV has won only six games in the last three seasons combined and are expected to be among the worst teams at the FBS level this year. Minnesota nearly crapped out in Vegas last year, winning only 30-27 after Goldie nearly lost the "Golden" from Golden Gophers while playing craps at the Palms. UNLV went on to beat only Air Force and New Mexico with a loss to FCS Northern Arizona.

How bad is UNLV? They lost 59-7 at Washington State in 2010, and Wazzu is awful. That same year they lost 41-14 to FCS level Southern Utah. Phillip Nelson put Purdue in a full Nelson last year in Minneapolis and he should start 2013 with a nice game. Minnesota 45, UNLV 10

Friday

Western Michigan (0-0) at Michigan State (0-0) 8pm Big Ten Network

The Only Colors Preview

Wasn't it just two years ago that Western Michigan had a prolific offense that made a bowl game and looked to have one of the next great MAC quarterbacks? Last year they crashed down to 4-8 and they are working under a new coach after Bill Cubit headed to Champaign to be Illinois' offensive coordinator. Last season their offense was okay, but the defense was pretty bad.

The Spartans finally settled on a quarterback and went with Andrew Maxwell, who started a good portion of last season. At one point this fall they had listed no less than FOUR quarterbacks at the No. 1 spot on the depth chart, a plan so audacious it made me wonder if Gary Nord had landed on his feet on an East Lansing practice field.

Michigan State has the opposite problem of Indiana. They have a championship caliber defense but an offense that would have trouble scoring if it were Antonio Cromartie with an NFL groupie. It likely won't matter here, but against Big Ten teams it will be an issue. Michigan State 24, Western Michigan 10

What else can really be said about this game? I am honestly not sure what to expect. A 200 yard, 3 TD game from Akeem Hunt? Sure.

Since upsetting an undefeated Ball State team and reaching a bowl game as the MAC champs in 2008 Buffalo has gone 5-7, 2-10, 3-9, and 4-8. The Buckeyes were merely the only undefeated team in the country last season and enter this year expecting to match that feat.

This one will not be pretty, as Braxton miller plays three quarters at most and Ohio State's talented backups get plenty of valuable experience. Ohio State 59, Buffalo 10

Massachusetts (0-0) at Wisconsin (0-0) Noon Big Ten Network

Last season was UMass' first full season at the FBS level and it did not go well. Their 1-11 featured its only victory over fellow 1-11 team Akron in what might have been the worst FBS game played last season. Their home opener was a 45-6 loss to Indiana. Other ugly results were a 63-13 loss at Michigan, 52-14 at Western Michigan, 49-7 at Vanderbilt, and 63-0 at Northern Illinois.

Wisconsin has its own quarterback dilemma. For now, Joel Stave has won the job over Curt Phillips, but that was a battle that last most of last season. Like so many other games, it won't matter this week. The Badgers will hand off to James White and Melvin Gordon and win by a lot while Chris Borland tries not to kill a hapless Minuteman.

If a Big Ten team is going to drop a game to an FCS team this will be the one. The Fighting Illini have been pretty awful since starting the 2011 season 6-0, going a pretty awful 3-16 in their last 19 games. They also lost a lot of decent players on defense and have much of the same punchless offense back.

Fortunately, this is not the same Southern Illinois team that has been a regular in the FCS playoffs. They were 6-5 last year and finished in the middle of a pretty difficult Missouri Valley Conference that sent three teams to the FCS playoffs including eventual champion North Dakota State. The last time these teams met Illinois won 35-3 on its way to a 7-6 season and a bowl win in 2010. For now, Tim Beckman gets a break. Illinois 31, Southern Illinois 13

Can we please establish a new rule that Central Michigan gets to use Dan Lefevour in perpetuity against any Big Ten team it has to face? I kind of miss that guy because he was a lot of fun to watch. The Chips may have had the No. 1 overall draft pick in April's NFL Draft, but they haven't quite been the same since Lefevour left. They did win the Little Caesar's Bowl last season and had a decent 7-6 record, closing by winning five of their final six games.

It is an old refrain at this point, but Michigan should have little trouble unless Lefevour returns. The Chips lost to Michigan State at home last year 41-7 in the best offensive day of the year for Sparty. The Wolverines are a much better team.

Syracuse (0-0) vs. Penn State (0-0) at East Rutherford, New Jersey 3:30pm ABC

Is this a dangerous game for Penn State? It just might be. Syracuse wants to prove itself to its new conference (the ACC) and they are coming off of an 8-5 season in which they shared the Big East title with three other teams (including Cincinnati). The Orange also won a bowl game and six of their final seven.

The biggest question facing the Nittany Lions is how the sanctions will affect them in year 2. Last season was played with a ton of emption as Penn State willed itself to an 8-4 record after a disappointing 8-2 start. I don't think any team improved more over the course of the year. I really don't know what to think of them this year, so until I see something I am going to assume Bill O'brien is a coach that can get players to eat steel and crap rivets. Penn State 24, Syracuse 21

The MAC ALWAYS manages to get a Big Ten team every year. It is as constant as the tides. Sometimes it comes from expected games, while other times there are big upsets like last year's Central Michigan-over-Iowa game that changed the course of the year for both teams. It sent the Chips to a bowl in the end, while Iowa only won two more times and dropped six in a row to end the year.

As you know, these teams met last year and it was NIU's lone regular season loss. Iowa won 18-17 on a late touchdown from Damon Bullock and Jordan Lynch had not yet become Jordan Lynch. Lynch had only 54 yards passing with 119 rushing. He will be a lot better, while Iowa's offense did something nearly impossible last year. They made Greg Davis look like a worse offensive coordinator than Gary Nord.

There is always the specter of AIRBHG, who is real and must be feared/sated with blood. In short, I don't think the Hawkeyes are going to be good at all this year, and this could be a very long day for them. Northern Illinois 31, Iowa 13

Corn Nation Preview

Joe Tiller's old team gets an homage here at the blog as the Cowboys get their return game in after hosting Nebraska two seasons ago. The Cornhuskers took that one 38-14 in their first season in the Big Ten and now look to start a year that does not end in the Capitol One Bowl.

As the conference's new far-flung western outpost we can expect more games against the Mountain West than the MAC for Nebraska. This should also be an easy win for them. Wyoming was another team that lost to an FCS team last year and Nebraska was 10-2 before Montee Ball and Wisconsin trampled them in Indianapolis. Nebraska 45, Wyoming 10

Is there anything better than that 10:30pm west coast game when a Big Ten team heads out to Pac-12 territory? We get it twice this year, both at Cal, as the Golden Bears open with the Wildcats before hosting Ohio State later on. Cal famously holds the distinction of having the longest active Rose Bowl drought, having not gone since 1958. Only Arizona, Colorado, and Utah have done worse as teams from the current Big Ten and Pac-12 that have never gone.

Cal has a new coach in Sonny Dykes, who was a possible Purdue target before we landed coach Hazell. They were 3-9 last year but pushed the Buckeyes in Columbus before falling 35-28. Will that be enough to challenge Venric Mark and the Wildcats? Strange things always happen in these games, so don't be surprised if this is closer than most. Northwestern 34, California 27

The more I read about this game, the closer I think it will be.

In preparing to write about Saturday's game I came across a very good piece by the Boiled Sports guys. J Money asked if a first game to a season can be pivotal. Often it is not, as Purdue usually plays some overmatched FCS or MAC team to start the year. The last time Purdue lost an opener was at Notre Dame in 2010. Before that, the last time Purdue began a season with a loss was a surprising 27-26 loss to a very good Bowling Green team in 2003. Since then, Purdue blasted Syracuse, Akron, Indiana State, Toledo (twice), Northern Colorado, squeezed by Middle Tennessee State, and thumped Eastern Kentucky.

Cincinnati presents a different challenge. The Bearcats were a tiebreaker away from playing in a BCS bowl last season and won 10 games. They have a very stout defense and they are playing at home. In fact, they are making the game an event by proclaiming it a White Out. The excitement of playing a lower level Big Ten team at home is so high the game is sold out and the Bearcats are expecting to have the largest home crown in their history.

As J Money intimated, this is a game that can be the start of something very big for Purdue. If the Boilers win on the road at a very good opponent, suddenly games at home against Notre Dame, Northern Illinois, and Nebraska don't look as daunting. Eight or nine wins may not be out of the question. If Purdue loses, especially if it gets blown out, we're in for a rough time that could see as few as three wins the rest of the way.

Cincinnati has its own questions to answer, but they aren't as numerous as our own:

Cincinnati Offense Vs. Purdue Defense:

There are two very interesting developments with the Cincinnati offense that may work in Purdue's favor. First, it was recently announced that veteran center Dan Sprague was lost for the season with a knee injury. He had been out for awhile and was unlikely to play against Purdue anyway, but he was a solid starter last year for the Bearcats on an offensive line that was supposed to be a key matchup against Purdue's defensive line. Redshirt freshman Deyshawn Boyd from Warren Central in Indianapolis will get the start.

Second, and perhaps more significant, is that Tommy Tuberville did not name a starting quarterback in the release of his first depth chart. Brendon Kay was long projected to be the starter after taking the job from Munchie Legaux last season, but Legaux has performed well while Kay has battled a sore shoulder.

This makes for an interesting decision for Tuberville. Darrell Hazell said earlier this week he was not specifically going to prepare for one quarterback or the other. Legaux is more of a dual threat with 335 yards rushing and four touchdowns last year, but he also threw nine interceptions and was only accurate on 52% of his passes. Kay had 306 yards rushing and two scores, but completed 63% of his passes with only two interceptions. Legaux did play more, but both played in 11 games and Kay had the better efficiency rating. As Matt Opper of Down the Drive said this morning (my answers can be found here) , Kay is less like to make a "catastrophic mistake" than Legaux. That was an issue with him last season and led to Kay taking over.

The Bearcats must also replace running back George Winn, who rushed for 1,334 yards and 13 scores last season. It looks like they will go with a back-by-committee approach led by RD Abernathy and Hosey Williams. Abernthy had 366 yards and three scores last year.

At receiver Chris Moore, Shaq Washington, and Alex Chisum are all relatively green compared to the talent Cincinnati lost. Anthony McClung, their top receiver returning, has a hamstring issue and will be limited.

If the defensive line is the strength of Purdue's team the battle in the trenches could be where the game is decided. Austin Bujnoch and Sam Longo are seniors at the guard spots, but Bond is playing his first collegiate game at a critical position in the middle. He has to handle Bruce Gaston, who may be one of the best defensive tackles in the Big Ten. Cincinnati is also concerned with Ryan Russell coming off the end, and that is without the mysterious Jules Williams making an appearance as a pass rushing specialist.

As always, Purdue's defense will go as the linebackers go. Armstead Williams earned a starting spot, Joe Gilliam is healthy, and Sean Robinson has made big strides. They have to play well against the pass since that is Cincinnati's preferred mode of travel, but they must also be ready to contain Legaux or Kay if they run. Chisum at 6'3" is their biggest receiver, but Ricardo Allen doesn't have a huge mismatch in size like has happened in the past.

Purdue's secondary and defensive lines both need to be in sync and have a good day. I don't think they are overmatched in any way and Purdue may even have a slight advantage up front.

Purdue Offense Vs. Cincinnati Defense:

We're going to have to get used to facing very good middle linebackers and Greg Blair is no different. He is probably going to be one of the best in the country and he is coming off of a season where he had 138 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Basically, we can expect him to be everywhere and he is the heart of a defense that only gave up 18.5 points per game. If we were still running the Nordfense we might gain negative yards against him alone. Also, it was his first year of major college football and he was 20 pounds overweight.

Purdue's retooled offensive line may have an advantage at opening some holes for Brandon Cottom, Dalyn Dawkins, and Akeem Hunt. The bearcat defensive line has two seniors in Mitch Meador and Jordan Stepp, but Purdue has a size advantage and only Stepp was a regular player last year. The line also has a shot at keeping Rob Henry clean with Brad Harrah and Silverberry Mouhon as relatively new starters on the end.

Jeff Luc and Nick Temple will play with Blair at linebacker and give Cincy a huge advantage. Luc was even coached under our own defensive coordinator Greg Hudson earlier in his career at Florida State. In the secondary Deven Drane and Arryn Chenault will be matched up against Purdue's relatively new receivers in B.J. Knauf and Shane Mikesky.

I admit that I am very concerned for Purdue's passing game with the quality of Cincinnati's secondary. That said, I think Purdue's running game can really prosper if the offensive line continues top open holes. Henry, as we know, is a good read-option quarterback and there is plenty of talent to tote the rock. If Purdue has a game plan that is run heavy and only has Henry throw 20-25 times per game it will help.

Special Teams:

Purdue has named Paul Griggs as the No. 1 kicker for now, but Tony Miliano has more experience after going 17 of 22 last year. At punter John Lloyd is a first time starter, while Cody Webster could be one of the best in the nation. Hopefully we won't see Webster much unless he is on the field holding for placements.

An X-factor, and he will be all year, is Raheem Mostert. Abernathy did little last year on kick returns but Mostert is a threat to score every time. Combined with Knauf and Frankie Williams back at punt returner as threat to actually do something, Purdue has an advantage here.

Game Outlook:

It is certainly going to be interesting. Both coaches are coaching their first game at the school. Both offenses have some questions at the skill positions with Cincinnati's passing game looking better, but Purdue's running game looking strong. Purdue's defense is stronger where Cincy's is weak and vice versa.

I think you're going to see a closer game than the 10.5 point spread. Cincinnati is good and won 10 games, but that has not translated to national respect as they barely got a token mention in the polls. It is more because people expect Purdue to be bad. Still, that line has already come down from 14 points.

Much of this game will come down to how disciplined Purdue plays. What hurt Purdue greatly under coach Hope was a general lack of discipline. There were always dumb penalties, stupid turnovers, or missed assignments that started in year one and were never corrected. From everything I have read about coach Hazell he has done his best to clear this up.

Purdue has some talented players that didn't get a chance to shine the last few years. Saturday is their first chance to show that Purdue can be a surprise in 2013.
