Rather than just focus on the Bucket game I wanted to widen the lens a bit.

When you have a weekend like Purdue fans did this weekend it seems unfair to put so much focus on just one event so I wanted to widen the lens a bit and give you some of our favorite tweets from the entirety of the weekend that saw Purdue beat West Virginia, Gonzaga, Duke, and IU in football. Plus, there was Nebraska’s victory over Iowa that opened the door for Purdue to wind up winning the West and heading to the Big Ten Title game this Saturday. So sit back, relax, and enjoy some tweets!

Ryan and I discuss all the great things that happened this weekend.

I don’t think in my wildest dreams I expected Purdue to go 4-0 this weekend and add in a victory by Nebraska over the Hawkeyes plus Volleyball makes the NCAA Tournament and you’ve got a pretty perfect weekend for Purdue fans. Just pure entertainment from Thursday through Sunday. It was glorious.

We talk West Virginia. Gonzaga. Nebraska over Iowa. The Bucket game. Victory over Duke. Even just typing this out right now it’s shocking to see all the good things that happened to Purdue over the weekend. Relive the weekend with us as we go day by day to discuss the highs and even higher highs of Purdue’s phenomenal weekend. You’ll want to tune in just to hear about the Bluey play I attended because ultimately that’s why you’re all here isn’t it? Now it’s onward to the Big Ten Championship game and awaiting the AP Top 25 that should come out at Noon today.

Please ignore me butchering the name of the Phil Knight event roughly 100 times. Who cares, Purdue won!

Plus a reminder on how to watch.

Win, and they’re in. It’s just that simple. Purdue hasn’t had a chance like this since the Big Ten went to Divisions. Sure, it took an incredible upset by Nebraska to get Purdue in this position but when you look back on the 2022 season for Purdue (if they make it) you won’t remember, or care, that Purdue backed into this position because Iowa couldn’t finish a game. You won’t remember that Purdue had opportunities against Iowa and Wisconsin to prove themselves best in the West but failed. You’ll remember (again, if they win) that Purdue won the Big Ten West division and went on to play in the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis.

Standing in front of Purdue preventing them from this is their hated rival the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hoosiers are having a down year after their back to back winning seasons in 2019 and 2020. It really looked like IU was heading in a complete different direction. Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for us, things went off the rails. Now, they are the first team to lose 700 (and counting) games and head into the Bucket game with a 4-7 record and their only opporunity today being to ruin Purdue’s goals. Don’t get me wrong that can be a huge motivator, but will it be enough to help an IU offense that completed all of two passes in their last game (that went to double overtime I should add)? I’m not convinced.

Join us here in the open thread today. Hop in early to talk about last night’s basketball victory over Gonzaga and stick around to hang out with everyone as we prepare to battle for the Bucket and seal our fate. Boiler Up!!!

The Boilermakers and Hoosiers square off for the 124th time on Saturday in the annual Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket. Purdue is looking for their second straight 8 win regular season and a potential birth in the B1G Championship Game if Nebraska can defeat the Hawkeyes on Friday. With a victory, Purdue shares a B1G West Division Title and climbs the bowl choice ladder just a little bit. Meanwhile, Indiana is struggling for a second consecutive season after the anomaly of the 2020 season where they nearly made it to the B1G Championship Game. The Hoosiers started off 3-0 before dropping their next seven straight and then defeating Michigan State last week to bring their record to 4-7.

We go on the record for this weekend’s Bucket game.

Jumbo Heroes (5-6):

I just can’t fathom picking IU here. Even if it was what I really thought, it’s not. I want that Old Oaken Bucket back, I want a share of the Big Ten West, and with help from Nebraska later today I would love a shot at the Big Ten Title game in Indianapolis.
I don’t have much faith in IU’s passing game since they completed just two passes in their double overtime victory over Michigan State. That’s good because I don’t necessarily have a lot of faith in the Purdue passing defense. IU is going to try and establish the run early and go from there. The Purdue defensive line and linebacker corps has been surprisingly stout this year against the run. Let’s hope they can keep it up for one more game.
Plus, the IU defense is not great. I think Purdue should be able to put up points but given what we know about this Purdue team I’m sure it will be closer than we all would like. Regardless, I think Purdue wins.
Purdue 24

This has been a season for Purdue that has been another full of ‘what if’s’ with close losses to PSU and Syracuse preventing them from playing for a 10 win regular season. Instead, the Boilers will be battling for a West Division title and a chance at the B1G Title. To get any of those they need to beat an Indiana team that has struggled mightily most of the season on both sides of the ball.

Purdue will look to establish the run early to take pressure off AOC and force Indiana in to man to man coverage where Charlie Jones and Payne Durham can make the Hoosier defense pay. On defense, Purdue will want to make Indiana one dimensional by taking away the QB run and forcing Dexter Williams to throw the ball. If Purdue can do those things, Purdue wins going away.

Purdue: 34

Indiana: 20

Drew (6-5):

We’ve got a battle of styles brewing in Bloomington on Saturday. The air raid (especially if Mockobee is out) of Purdue faces off against the new found ground attack of the Hoosiers. This is a weird game for Purdue. They need to take the lead early and make Indiana chase. If they get sucked into a grind it out game where the Hoosiers dominate time of possession this thing could be closer than anticipated. The Boilermakers pull this thing out in the end, because the Hoosiers won’t be able to hit 28 but they will make things uncomfortable.

Purdue: 28

Indiana 17

Gabi (0-0):

The Boilers are favored in this game for obvious reasons and they are the better team. However, a win won’t come easy. Senior night, bucket game, rivalry all come into play on a game like this and IU would love to be the reason Purdue misses a chance at a Big Ten West title. And in true Purdue fashion, we usually play down to our opponents (I see you northwestern.)

IU proved last week that they can actually play football but I don’t think their defense will be able to contain AOC and co. Purdue has more to lose, more weapons and has shown they can be a really solid football team. I think Brohm will have these guys ready to play and Purdue will take a lead early on and never look back.

Purdue-24

IU-17

Ryan (1-2):

I think the Purdue offense comes out firing in this one as the IU defense has given up plenty of points and yards this season. Aiden O’Connell has done better at limiting turnovers and spreading the ball around. I like him to continue that trend during his last regular season game, especially given the weather conditions.

The only IU weapon I am nervous about is Jaylin Lucas in the return game, because since when do guys have multiple return touchdowns in this economy? On defense, it will be strength on strength as IU’s pass game was very Navy-esque last week, relying almost exclusively on the running game. Purdue might just stack the box and dare IU to throw the ball.

I think Purdue brings the bucket back home once again. Let’s just hope that Nebraska takes care of business today first.

The folks from the IU SB Nation blog stopped by for a chat.

Between 2019-2020 Indiana football went 14-7 almost an unprecedented level of success for them. Since then they’ve gone 6-17. How did things go so wrong so quickly?

Lots of reasons, honestly. Indiana had a capable offensive system with a very, very good quarterback in both of those years. Former offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan’s playcalling left much to be desired in 2021 as the injuries piled up and the losses kept coming while the deterioration of the offensive line, which had been happening since Allen’s hiring, truly caught up to the program.

Indiana pivoted to a new offensive system this year under Walt Bell, but it was and is largely unfit for the Hoosiers’ current roster and incoming recruits. Players and position groups meant to be strengths have fallen off. It’s not just one thing, but multiple factors that haven’t been solved.

It’s been a strange year for IU with them starting the season beating Big Ten West contender Illinois and then winning their next two. However after that 3-0 start they didn’t win another game until this past Saturday against a depleted Michigan State. Did IU just hit Illinois at the right time or is there a better team hidden underneath that 4-7 record?

I do not, for the life of me, understand how Indiana won the Illinois game. Bell put together a well-called drive and quarterback Connor Bazelak feasted on underneath routes thanks to soft coverage late in the fourth quarter before Allen did what he does best (sometimes at least) and called a game sealing defensive stop.

The “better team” argument has some merit with Indiana having chances to win in the fourth quarter against both Maryland and Rutgers, but this is still a team that consistently makes game-sealing mistakes and unforced errors that allow an opponent to make winning plays.

For those of us who maybe haven’t watched many IU games this season, who are the stars on offense and defense this year? Who could give Purdue trouble?

On offense, the run game is coming off of its best performance of the year against Michigan State behind running backs Shaun Shivers and Josh Henderson while quarterback Dexter Williams II added a scrambling ability and willingness Indiana hasn’t truly had since Peyton Ramsey in 2019, who I will now note is the last Hoosier quarterback to bring the bucket back to Bloomington.

On defense, watch out for a potential return from star linebacker Cam Jones and star freshman do-it-all man Dasan McCullough. Tiawan Mullen, while definitely not perfect this year, is still capable of making plays for Indiana in the secondary.

Somehow Indiana beat Michigan State despite Dexter Williams II going 2/7 passing for just 31 yards. What is going on at the QB position? IU still scored 39 points in this double overtime game. The team ran for 257 yards. Can Purdue expect more of the same this week?

Yes, Dexter Williams II is likely Indiana’s guy at quarterback for the foreseeable future. He has speed and a strong arm so if the run game gives Purdue enough fits that the Boilermakers start to stack the box, Bell maybe, might, possibly look to have Williams II throw the ball deep.

While Purdue is currently a favorite to win this game us Purdue fans know that Purdue in a must win game can be a dangerous position. If Saturday night you are writing the story of the IU victory what went right for the Hoosiers?

Indiana would have kept the ball out of Aidan O’Connell’s hands with a strong ground game and forced fits on defense when it absolutely needed to. O’Connell has always performed well under Brohm’s offense in this game and Indiana is well aware of that.

It’s a rivalry game so it’s hard to pick your rival, but what do you think will be the outcome of this one including a score?

As fun as it would be to knock off Purdue and for Indiana to recapture *some* momentum, I just don’t see it happening.

I think Purdue is vulnerable and isn’t a sure bet, but I’d still favor them to win knowing how Brohm’s scheme has given Allen trouble in the past. Something like 24-10 feels fitting.

Despite it being Thanksgiving it’s always a good day to hate your rival.

Being in that it’s Thanksgiving I know a lot of us are being reflective on what the year has brought us, what we are thankful for this year, and maybe what we could do better in the coming new year. That’s all wonderful stuff. Here at Hammer and Rails though we’ve got an IU game to prepare for and so I asked the staff to send me some reasons why they hate IU/why IU sucks. Below are their responses but I want to give you mine first.

I grew up in a small town in Indiana about an hour Southeast of Indianapolis. That should tell you all you need to know about who was the favored school at my high school and really all throughout my life. Purdue fans were decidedly in the minority. When I was young I hated that, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that not everything that’s good is popular and not everything that’s popular is good.

I’ve spent years interacting with IU fans. Some of my most memorable always involve older fans who seem to think it’s a good idea to yell at Purdue students. I remember one year attending the Big Ten Tournament with a group of Paint Crew members when we sat up in the rafters. In order to get up there you had to be intentional. It wasn’t a section you just stumbled upon. Regardless, a man in his late 50s or 60s came up with a piece of paper and just started waving it and yelling, you guessed it, “BANNERS!” It was one of the saddest, most pathetic things I’ve ever seen a grown man do. How sad his life must have been. Oh well. Such is their lot in life I suppose. IU Sucks, let’s keep our Bucket.

Ryan:

Let’s start with basketball. I went to Purdue for 5 years and not once did I see a loss to IU. 9 wins, 0 loses, 1 Archie, countless comments by ridiculous IU fans saying “banners”, 99% of which were made by people who weren’t alive when the last banner was won. This program lives in the past and relies on its name to bring in recruits, just to under-develop them. And this is supposed to be their hallmark program. Not having won a championship since the Reagan administration means you are not a blue-blood.

As for football, I only need 1 number: 703, hopefully 704 after this weekend. I guess that’s why so many fans decide to jump on the ND bandwagon (they also haven’t won a championship since the Reagan administration). At least IU is a party school so students can forget about the sports teams.

Gabi:

Why IU Sucks

Because reversible jackets went out in the 90’s. IU loves to live in the past, whether it’s the banners from a million years ago or a Covid football season where they believe to think they’re relevant. The notorious “champions of the offseason.” IU sucks cuz, well cuz they do.

Drew:

I’ll be honest, I have a hard time hating Indiana football, and that’s why Indiana football sucks. Purdue deserves a better rival than the apathetic Hoosier fanbase. I get it, it’s hard to pull yourself away from the Notre Dame watch party at the country club, load up the B.M.W. and make it back for a Saturday game, but I would appreciate a bit more effort. Purdue seniors will end their Big10 regular season career in front of a 1/2 full (1/4 of that Purdue fans) Memorial Stadium. While other players get to play in a blood thirsty rivalry game, Purdue has to travel to the patchuli capital of the midwest, and play a team that would rather be standing in line for basketball tickets. Indiana doesn’t deserve to have a team like Purdue as their football “rival” and that, good readers, is why they suck.

Jed:

I dislike IU for a multitude of reasons but one fan in particular makes me generally hate all things IU sports because he kind of represents the kind of fan many of us at Purdue have experienced: NAME REDACTED.

Listen, I don’t hate the students nor do I hate the university itself. I am thankful that a state institution pumps out high quality doctors to fill our hospitals. I am thankful that Indiana has the Hamilton Luger School of Global and International Affairs which sends more graduates to D.C than just about any other on a consistent basis. My issues don’t lie with the students who cheer for their school with a baseline of respect to it. But there just seems to be something about IU’s athletic department that just makes many of their fans just…awful.

NAME REDACTED represents so many similar interactions with IU fans that I’ve had over the years. Fans who never got close to attending any classes at IU (even with that 80.4% acceptance rate) and want to spout off horrific things like wishing an opposing team’s bus would get hit on the way home (I’ve got the receipts below).

Purdue is a place that, for the most part, fans have an attachment to the university as alumni, employees, living in West Lafayette. IU seems to get most of their fans because they found a shirt at Walmart or a Love’s gas station and because of that don’t feel any sort of connection to the university beyond wins and losses. They don’t care how awful their behavior makes the rest of the university look because, like NAME REDACTED has shown, it’s all about what the AD can do for you personally. It’s probably also why he has been blocked by the very basketball and football programs he claims to root for on Twitter. That’s also why he is the lowest common denominator of fan most of us at Purdue think of when it comes to IU.

Check out the highlights and some analysis from Jeff Brohm’s press conference prior to the Bucket Game

Head Coach Jeff Brohm held his weekly press conference ahead of the big matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers for the Old Oaken Bucket. The Purdue Boilermakers have battled their way to a 7-4 record and look to get to 8 regular season wins and a shot at the B1G Championship Game (with a little help from the Nebraska Cornhuskers) on Saturday.

Q. Jeff, what are you most proud of this team so far?

JEFF BROHM: “Well, I’m very proud of our team because they do work hard, they do everything they can to try to improve each and every week and find a way to win. Some weeks we find a way to look really, really good; other week we find a way to just survive.”

“But that’s part of college football. I think they’re able to take constructive criticism and find ways to improve and stick together. I think they’re a hungry group, so I’m proud of the effort they’ve given us.”

Analysis: This is something that still needs to improve for Purdue to take that next step as a program. Every season under Brohm there seems to be games where they absolutely look unprepared and don’t seem to have the focus they need to compete. Whether that is Eastern Michigan in 2018 or Wisconsin in 2022, the games where Purdue falls totally flat need to be eliminated. That’s the difference between 8 win seasons and 10 win seasons.

Q. Will we see Gus Hartwig the rest of the year? If not, who will snap the ball on Saturday?

JEFF BROHM: “No, unfortunately Gus suffered a substantial injury. Be in a cast on his lower extremity for the next couple weeks and have surgery and be out for an extended period.”

“He was a leader of our offensive line, a great snapper, smart, tough, and in-state recruit that came and want to make a difference. Unfortunately he got rolled up during the game and got injured. So we’ll get him back healthy, but it will take quite a bit of time.”

“I think Josh will probably get the nod at center. He came in and played. He’s our best snapper. He’s just got to continue to improve and get better at the position. And then Spencer will back him up, and also Malachi, a true freshman who has been traveling with us to all the games will be ready to go.”

Analysis: This is unfortunate news for Hartwig. He was playing well this season but there may be a bright spot in this for the development of the offensive line for next season. Hartwig is a great player but he may be a better option for Purdue at guard if another capable center can step up. The fact that true freshman center Malachi Preciado is traveling speaks volumes about how good he can become, sooner rather than later.

With Jalen, did he play some linebacker for you on Saturday, Jalen Graham?

JEFF BROHM: That’s what he plays for us.

Q. Well, he kind of moves around a lot, but he seemed to be in a different position...

JEFF BROHM: “So Jalen is our hybrid outside linebacker nickel position. So with him, we can use him against regular run sets and spread sets and not have to bring in a bigger body to play linebacker to stop the run.”

“Now, with that said, not to give away what we’re doing, but...he’ll move to a spot, whether we think it’s pass or run. So he has done that a few times; you are correct...because the one he picked off was in the middle. Not to give it away, but if we anticipate what we think is being called we will move him around slightly to better suit the call.”

Analysis: I speak about Jalen Graham’s usage against Northwestern and heading into the Indiana game as a spy against athletic quarterbacks in my ‘Matchups to Watch’ article later this week. Graham is an integral part of Purdue being able to defend quarterbacks who can run or make plays with their feet because at his size he can help in the traditional run game but also is athletic enough to defend the pass in space. Graham has the potential to have a solid NFL career if he can show development as a run stopper.

Q. Earlier in the year you struggled dealing with running quarterbacks. I think Florida Atlantic comes to mind; Syracuse a little bit. Where has your defense maybe improved in that area as you face a big challenge on Saturday?

JEFF BROHM: “I thought we made improvements the last two teams without question on defense. We’ve made some adjustments. I think they’ve all been beneficial. This past week we knew they had a wildcat package ready, and I think other than that one time where they did it in a slightly different personnel, we had a call ready and we shut it down.”

“I do think we’re better equipped and prepared for it. If you watch Indiana’s last game they had some runs for their quarterback and some reads in certain sets and it was effective, and then started to get a little stale.”

“Then they started to spread the field more and do it in a different way and hit a couple other big runs. So they have multiple ways to run the quarterback, and when you have that type of athlete in the game and you can complete two passes during the game and you beat Michigan State at Michigan State, you’re obviously doing a lot of things correctly.”

“We have to have a wide variety of calls ready against the different personnel sets they have when it’s a tighter box with a lot of the blockers and when it’s a wider set with a lot more space, because they have the ability to change it and it was effective for them.”

“That’s going to be the challenge for us, is making sure we have a good plan for all those different scenarios, because I do think we have made strides in the subtle ways we’ve seen it.”

Analysis: Trying to force newly installed Hoosier QB Dexter Williams into mistakes via pressure in the pocket and keeping him contained there or using Graham as a spy in the run game will be key to the Boilers success. Having Jalen on the field allows Purdue to switch looks up without needing to sub guys in and out. Williams gives Indiana room for error because he is able to make plays with his legs but having a complete game on film will help Purdue create a game plan, as Brohm points out, to have success.

Q. Sydnor has done some positive things this year. Do you look at those guys as a nice building block for the future defensive lines?

JEFF BROHM: “I think we’ve made strides on the defensive line. We have developed depth. Got more bodies. We’ve taken more recruits as commits at that position. We’ve committed to it and we will always try to do that.”

“But we have definitely made strides there. A lot of guys have played football, so they’re experience level has gone up. We are able to rotate guys in, and Khordae has definitely stood out and done a really good job.”

“I feel good that as we analyze our roster at the end of the year, that’s a position that doesn’t need as much immediate help at all.”

“There are some other position that we feel like we’ll probably have to make sure we address, but the defensive line has developed a good nucleus of quite a few guys. Even though we had injuries, we have been able to sustain pretty productive play at that spot.”

Analysis: In short, give Mark Hagan a raise and another title in addition to him already being the defensive line coach. Coach Hagan has proven himself to be as good of a recruiter as any in Purdue’s history during his two stints in West Lafayette. Elevating him to director of recruiting (at least defensive) would help Purdue a bit more in that department.

It is also nice to have a position that is foundational to a good program (defensive line) and not need to address holes in the offseason. That allows the staff to concentrate on more glaring in the portal (defensive back, linebacker, running back, wide receiver, and quarterback).

The youth at that position is really, really good with Caraway and Sydnor leading the way but guys like Joe Strickland, Cole Brevard, Mo Omonode, JP Deeter, and Greg Hudgins form a young nucleus of players Purdue fans can be excited about. The Boilermakers need to develop one of these guys into a pass rushing force on a consistent basis to take the next step. I trust Hagan to get one of them there.

Q. Among the freshmen this year who didn’t play, any of those guys stand out in the redshirt years as guys you’re especially enthusiastic about moving forward long-term?

JEFF BROHM: “Right now I think Joe Strickland has made a lot of strides and will be a good player for us. Got sick with mono that wiped him out quite a bit and dropped a lot of weight.”

“Brady Allen continues to improve as a good young prospect. Max Klare at tight end has a chance to do a really good job for us. Zion Steptoe has made strides at receiver as well. I’m trying to think. And there is probably more.”

“So it’s important that we continue to develop them. Those are probably the main leaders and there are probably a few others that are getting better that I left out.”

“I think we got a good crew that’s just got to work harder throughout the remainder of the season and make sure they really utilize spring ball to get better.”

Analysis: Eyes were already on the development of Brady Allen, as the focal point of the 2022 recruiting class, but the development of young weapons on offense will be key next season. Steptoe is a play making option at receiver and freshman Max Klare is going to be a good tight end one day at Purdue.

There are a number of other freshman who have developed nicely throughout this season who can’t break into the two deeps because of experienced players ahead of them. JP Deeter is a young defensive tackle who needs to continue adding bulk on the interior but he brings a lot of athleticism and size to that position. The young defensive backs are not quite ready to help but they will be given every opportunity in the spring to take hold of starting positions with Bryce Hampton, Jamari Brown, Cory Trice, and Reece Taylor all potentially leave the program (barring an extra year for some).

INJURY UPDATE HEADING INTO INDIANA:

According to Head Coach Jeff Brohm the following updates were provided:
RB Devin Mockobee: Concussion Protocol
DT Branson Deen: Likely out
C Gus Hartwig: Out for Season
LB Kieran Douglas: Probable
WR Broc Thomspon: Unknown but unlikely
RB King Doerue: This was always week to week with what Brohm described earlier in the year as ‘something King will always have to deal with.’ That injury or issue isn’t known but having Doerue available if Mockobee isn’t able to go will be a big help.
