It was a day to get fresh Twitter reactions on Wisconsin beating Purdue.

I know it is hard to imagine Wisconsin beating Purdue in a game with a few big plays, a steady running game, and Purdue making a plethora of mistakes early that would loom large, but that is what happened yesterday.

At least Purdue had won four in a row before this one. Also, it doesn’t really affect the Big Ten West race. As long as Purdue wins out (and it will very likely be favored in three of the remaining four games) it will get to serve as the sacrificial lamb for Ohio State in the Big Ten title game.

Yes, Purdue-Illinois in a few weeks is likely going to decide the division. I am scared too.

We can still have some fun with In Tweets though. Even though I am leaving H&R, I am still going to be active on Twitter as games are going on. Maybe one day we can beat Wisconsin again.

The more things change...

It was a beautiful afternoon in Indianapolis. It was a day of freedom and promise, where you could do pretty much whatever you wanted to do. It was a good morning and early afternoon driving around with my sunroof open on some errands, I was looking forward to a late afternoon of watching football. Then Purdue was down 14-0 before ESPN could flip over from Cincinnati-SMU to our game.

It’s a good thing I was repairing a busted doorknob. At least it made the day productive.

Wisconsin has won 16 in a row against Purdue, and today was more of the same. Purdue was down 21-0 before the first quarter was even over. The Boilers succumbed to the usual big run followed by a big pass, turnovers, and other mistakes. The game was really over by the end of the first quarter, and the rest of the day Wisconsin was content to merely keep Purdue at bay. Another mistake early in the second half led to another TD, making is 28-3. Even when Purdue finally got a touchdown, Wisconsin responded with the backbreaking big run as Isaac Guerendo, from our own back yard in Avon, busted a 54-yard run just as we had the faintest hope of getting back into it. The final two touchdowns were cosmetic and will look good for the pollsters when Purdue finishes 8-4 or 9-3, but it was the same old, same old against Wisconsin.

Are we really surprised at this point? I don’t know who is going to take over as the Badgers’ permanent head coach, but it won’t matter. They’re going to do the same thing and until Purdue can finally stop it while not making our own mistakes, we will see the same results.

It is a streak so consistent that it will outlast my own tenure at this site. As of November 1, 2022, I am officially leaving Hammer & Rails and SB Nation.

No, I am not just fed up and walking away because of this game.

A few weeks ago I was approached by another entity, which will become clear soon, but I cannot officially announce who it is yet. They wanted to get to know me a little better and talk about what has been built here. They offered me an opportunity to become publisher of a new site. This came completely out of left field, as it wasn’t even on my radar before they reached out to me. I decided to accept their offer, and it means an end to my time with Hammer & Rails and SB Nation.

That means it is time for changes. As part of the offer I was asked to create a staff with the existing budget provided by the new venture. As a result, both Casey and Jace will be coming over with me. They will serve as full-time guys on my staff covering Purdue. We have had several discussions about the transition and they have some fantastic ideas on how to hit the ground running that I know you will enjoy if you follow us. Kyle is also coming over in a part time role providing some x’s and o’s analysis on things, as well as recruiting thoughts. I will still be doing some writing, but I will also be serving in an editorial role and working to secure local sponsors for podcasts and such (example: my existing podcast with Kory Sheets will move over). Casey and Jace will be the lead voices, and I am happy to take a small step back and be more “manager” than “writer” after millions of words here.

Not everything is changing though. Ledman (Jumboheroes) and Drew are staying around as your new managers. I am sure some of us will check in from time to time in the comments, but it will be their ship to steer in about a week and a half. I cannot think of two people I would trust more with this place. Both this place and the new venture will be great places for Purdue fans to gather, and it is an honor to hand the keys over to them.

I find it surreal that this weekend’s Wisconsin game is the last one I will write about here. It just makes me sad I could never write about a Final Four here, though Casey was sitting next to me in Louisville when I damn near had the chance.

I will have a big thank you post on October 31st, but I cannot thank the rest of the staff here enough, both past and present, for building this place. I will still write some over at our new digs, but I want to write some more thoughtful editorial stuff while also shedding light onto Purdue’s other sports.

It is very difficult to leave something I created so long ago. As you know, I am an emotional writer, for good or ill. I have grown from a hotheaded 26 year old when I started the “Boilermaker Football Blog” back in August 2006 to a somewhat wise 43 year old father today, and a lot of you have seen that along the way. I have even met many of you in person, be it a handshake and conversation or a “Yo, T-Mill” on the concourse at Ross-Ade or Mackey. This place has always been personal, and I have always tried to write like a fan that has been granted tremendous access. Just this March I was back on press row covering the Big Ten Tournament, but the most exciting part was meeting and speaking with Red Panda before her halftime performance of the Friday night games, and this was after I ran into Ed Hightower in the media room. Sitting courtside for Purdue basketball was just a bonus.

I am grateful for everything this place has given me. I am grateful it will live on. Finally, I am grateful for all of you who have made it possible, and I hope you will join Casey, Jace, Kyle, and myself over at our new venture (which will be officially announced by November 1).

I’m laughing....please tell everyone I’m laughing.

Purdue dropped today’s game at Wisconsin 35-24 and it wasn’t as close as the score indicates. Everything was fine until the opening kick, but it went downhill precipitously after that unfortunate event. I’m not sure what else to say about this game. The offense was putrid, the defense was pitiful, and special teams may have been the best unit for the Boilermakers, coming in at below average.

The ideal ratio for praise to criticism ratio is 5 positives for each negative and I’m going to make an attempt.

Positives

Payne Durham played well.

Jeff Brohm looked taller than Jim Leonhard.

AOC threw 2 touchdowns (granted, one was to the wrong team).

The safeties avoided all contact, ensuring that they remain healthy heading into the off week.

The Charlie Jones catch (you know the one).

Negative

Everything Else

For the first time in a while, I saw give-up in this Purdue team, starting with the head coach, and trickling down to every unit. The offense was uninspired. AOC threw 3 picks, and looked more comfortable throwing it to Wisconsin’s secondary than anyone not named Payne Durham or Charlie Jones. Brohm opted for a head scratching surrender punt on 4th and 1 down 21 and in need of a spark and then went for it (and got stuffed) on 4th and 1 in easy (for most) field goal range. I never got a feel for the game plan. It seemed like Purdue was both overly aggressive and overly cautious...and I’m not sure how to explain that. It felt like the Boilermakers spent the entire game responding to Wisconsin instead of playing their game.

The Boilermakers weren’t going to win this game with the offense blowing giant holes in their feet, but the defense didn’t cover themselves in glory either. The line didn’t get pressure, the linebackers refused to tackle, and the secondary...well...I’m going to refrain from giving y’all my true thoughts on the efforts of safety combination Cam Allen and Sanoussi Kane. It’s one thing to get beat, and it’s another thing altogether to quit on the field, and I saw give-up from the Purdue defense in the second half on a few plays.

Special teams provided nothing of note other than Mitchell Fineran missing a 24 yard field goal when Purdue was still interested in trying to win the game. Charlie Jones came in with the reputation as one of the best kick returners in the nation, but has yet to get an opportunity to return a kick because Purdue’s kick return unit refuses to block anyone.

The good news is Purdue still holds their Big 10 West destiny in their hands. They had a game to burn, and they doused that sucker with gasoline and lit it on fire today in Madison. They have an off week next Saturday and will hopefully spend that time getting healthy and extricating their craniums from their posteriors. As bad as this game was (and it was that bad) Purdue still has all of their (reasonable) goals on the board. Win against an offensively horrific Iowa team, and they play Illinois in Champaign for the Big10 West on November 12th.

Purdue needs to flush this game and focus on the stretch run. Brohm teams tend to finish strong, and a strong finish this season means a trip to Indianapolis and a shot at either Ohio State of Michigan (laughs nervously).

Can Purdue end the streak?

We all know the numbers: Purdue has lost 15 straight against Wisconsin. Purdue hasn’t won five games in a row since 2007. Purdue controls its own path to win the Big Ten West even if it loses in Madison, but it would be fantastic to finally get the Wisconsin monkey off our backs even if it is a subpar Wisconsin team.

It is still in Madison and it is homecoming for the Badgers, which is never an easy task even under the best of circumstances. Purdue is going to need to continue having a balanced offense with Devin Mockobee carrying the mail. the run defense also needs to stay stout. It has not allowed more than 50 yards in a game to a running back all season long, but this is still Wisconsin. I would not be surprised to see Braelon Allen running rampant all day long as Wisconsin backs do against Purdue.

We take a look at the spread and the over-under as the Boilermakers travel to Madison to face the Wisconsin Badgers.

WEEK 8

Wisconsin vs Purdue

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Wisconsin is favored by 2.5 points at home.

Purdue

The Boilermakers ride into Madison coming off a heart attack of a win at home against Nebraska, extending their winning streak to four. They currently stand at 5-2 (3-1) and are sitting just behind Illinois for top spot in the Big 10 West. The passing game looks great, points are aplenty, and the proverbial train is rolling.

A win for Purdue is going to take an air assault from an offense clicking quite well in the passing game; the Boilermakers possess the 16th-ranked passing offense in the nation against a group of Badgers sitting just outside the top 50 in passing defense. Aidan O’Connell is still regularly finding Charlie Jones, the one guy most defenses should be looking to stop the most with double teams, but the partners in crime keep getting away with it. I see Brohms Jeff and Brian scheming to get some mismatches with the sure-handed tight end Payne Durham, who’s second behind Jones in receptions and targets this season, against a middling Badgers secondary.

O’Connell will more than likely exceed 35 pass attempts, as Wisconsin’s clear defensive strength is their rush defense. If Purdue’s constantly transitioning OL can provide Devin Mockobee a big gap or two, I like Mockobee’s chances in making defenders miss in the secondary for some good extra chunk yardage. But as they seemingly always do, Wisconsin boasts a pretty-darn-good front seven. Purdue’s OL has their work cut out for them.

It’s hard to win on the road against the Badgers whether they’re struggling or not, and the Boilermakers know firsthand. Wisconsin has a fifteen-game winning streak against Purdue, but the good guys’ last win against this week’s opponent did come on the road...albeit in 2003. Some of these freshman weren’t even born yet.

That said, Purdue has clearly played better overall football of the two teams over the course of the season. If the offense can continue to fire on all cylinders, I can see Wisconsin’s defense committing to hinder the passing game, thus allowing Brohm to provide single-back sets where Wisconsin reads and expects pass, thus granting Mockobee more room in space, be it a designed run or a swing pass to the tailback out of Boonville, Indiana. Switching up pace for this pass-heavy offense will be key in what would be an important win in keeping up with Illinois in the race to the top of the Big 10 West.

Wisconsin

It can’t be ignored: the Badgers’ year hasn’t gone quite as they hoped. The preseason #18 and overwhelming favorite to be winner of the West possesses just one conference win and sits at the bottom of the division. In a surprise to many, they even fired Paul Chryst along the way.

Coming off a wild overtime loss to Michigan State (that was a fun one, sorry Badgers), it’s apparent that the 2022 edition of a typically tight, disciplined, organized offensive unit looks lost at times and can’t quite get it together. I personally expected a bit more out of Graham Mertz this season, and while he’s no slouch, at times his passes have looked more questionable than I thought they’d look in his second year under center. His play can best and most simply be described as inconsistent, partially due to the fact that their offensive line isn’t bullying at the line of scrimmage like they’re accustomed to. Wisconsin sits at 3-4 (1-3) heading into the matchup.

The key battle I see here is Purdue’s 17th-ranked rush defense against Wisconsin’s explosive pair of tailbacks Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi. Those two have combined for just north of 2000 yards and seventeen touchdowns behind an offensive line that doesn’t necessarily look quite like the brick wall of a Badgers line we’re used to seeing. Granted, Purdue’s defensive stats have been bolstered by a schedule involving some less-than-dominant rushing attacks, but one way or another, the Boilermakers are giving up under 100 yards per game on the ground. This is a bend-but-don’t-break Purdue defense going up against a disappointed but capable, and therefore most likely hungry, Badgers offense.

Even Wisconsin Interim Head Coach Jim Leonard has said it: “You’re seeing some guys in bigger roles than maybe they’re ready for, in some cases — across the board, not just talking offensive line...I think there are guys that have been thrown into roles out of necessity that may be a little bit over their head.”

Defensively, if Wisconsin can’t slow down the O’Connell-to-Jones train, as many have tried before, it’ll be a long day for the Badgers’ secondary. They’ll have to stay on their toes with the pacing of Purdue’s pass attack which can open up room for Devin Mockobee should Wisconsin’s secondary go all-in on trying to stop the pass. I know I said it earlier, but swing passes to Mockobee could be key in keeping the Boilermakers traveling into the red zone throughout the afternoon. And if Wisconsin’s shaky offense can’t stay on the field, I can see Mockobee having a career high game in total yardage.

Pick

I’m taking Purdue +2.5 in Madison.

This is a huge game for the Boilermakers if they want to contest for a spot in the Big 10 title game. It’s no small task to win on the road against the Wisconsin Badgers, but these aren’t the Badgers the general public is used to seeing for the better part of, well, a very long time. I predict Wisconsin’s offense having a bit of trouble staying on the field at times and that Purdue’s offense will eventually gas the Wisconsin D to pull away late on in a close game. We shall see.

The O/U for this matchup sits at 51.5, and I’ll take the over on that. I see this having a score line similar to last week’s 43-37 scare of a win over Nebraska, the other historically good red team in the West fallen on hard times.

It’s Wisconsin, so there is good beer.

I made my first visit to Madison to Purdue in 2009. The fans were very friendly, but I am betting that Purdue’s 37-0 loss had something to do with it. I was able to see and participate in Jump Around, then fled the place because Purdue was losing badly. On the way home I did mange to pick up a local brew that is the subject of today’s Friday Drankin’.

Capital Brewery

7734 Terrace Ave.

Middleton, WI 53562

Capital Brewing is west of the Madison campus about five and a half miles northwest of Camp Randall Stadium. They are one of the oldest breweries in Madison, as their roots go back to the 1870s. The current incarnation was founded in 1984, and brewed their first batch of beer, a pilsner, in the spring of 1986 and was founded to brew traditional German style lager beer in America. It has branched out to include American style ales, barrel aged beers, and several distinct IPA’s. Capital Amber (the largest seller) has been available in cans since 1999.

Wisconsin Amber - 5.2% ABV - This was hte beer I remember bringing back and it was pretty good. This rich Amber lager is the perfect balance of roasted caramel malts and clean hops flavors, making it a perfect choice for any occasion.

Supper Club - 5% ABV - Capital Brewery’s Supper Club® is an ode to the great Wisconsin supper club tradition, and goes great with a fish fry, prime rib, or just a relish tray. A classic Wisconsin lager sporting an American malt profile, Supper Club’s moderate mouth feel and mild bittering allow for superb drinkability. As they say in the vernacular – it’s not bad.

Pilsner - 4.7% ABV - Special Pilsner™ is a German-style pils brewed with malts and hops imported from Europe. The delicate sweetness of pilsner malt is perfectly balanced by the clean, dry bitterness of noble hops. One of our original Garten Braü™ beers and winner of over 25 medals, Capital Pilsner has truly withstood the test of time.

Winter Skal - 5.8% ABV - Winter Skal® is a malty, amber-hued lager with a flavor and aroma combo that can’t be matched. Liberty hops lend a beautiful floral and spice characteristic to balance the caramel and Munich malt backbone. Winter Skal drinkers welcome the colder weather with this easy-drinking lager. This sounds excellent!

Will the losing streak against Wisconsin end?

Jumbo Heroes (4-3):

My first year at Purdue 2004. We all know what happened that year. No need to talk about it further. My point is brining this up is that Purdue has not defeated Wisconsin since before I started college. I’m currently 36 years old. That’s a long time. I think when I look at a schedule for football season I’m more scared of Wisconsin than I am of either Michigan or Ohio State. It just never works out well for Purdue when these two teams meet.

This year might not be the most normal year. Wisconsin has already fired their head coach. They currently have a losing record of 3-4. Up is down. Down is up. If Purdue is going to win a game against Wisconsin maybe this is the year! I’ve said that before though. Right now the folks at Draft Kings have Purdue as a 2.5 point dog heading into Camp Randall. Given that home teams almost always get a 2-3 point advantage it seems like this is being thought of an even matchup.

This Purdue team has been incredibly inconsistent so far this year. They go up 17 and quickly fall back down into a tie. They give up touchdowns at the end of halves/games like it’s the most common thing in the world. With Purdue sitting at 5-2 maybe I’ll just have to be uncomfortable all season as we go into each and every game. I’m not going to say I trust Purdue, but Wisconsin has played a very weak schedule (all their wins are opponents that are not good). This is the year...maybe?

Purdue 35

Wisconsin 28

Travis (6-1):

This is the game that decides if Purdue really is a contender in the west. Yes, we have won four in a row, but Wisconsin is the bully that has kicked us around for years. They still have a good running back even though they are a mere 3-4. This is a team that has owned us like no other, so I would love to end this streak, but I don’t see it happening. Braelon Allen runs for 250 yards and 3 scores like Wisconsin always does.

Purdue 20

Wisconsin 30

Jace (5-2):

This is a tough one. Wisconsin has long reigned over Purdue, for the last 18 years to be exact. This season might be the best chance they’ve had at least on paper to end that streak. That being said, Purdue should win this game given where both teams stand. Expect the Boilermakers to stack the box and make Graham Mertz beat them, which I don’t think he can. Another thing to consider: Tennessee was 0-15 in their last 15 games against Alabama this year and won. I think Purdue follows suit and get a huge win in Madison.

Purdue 31

Wisconsin 27

Drew (4-3):

Wisconsin has been the boogey man for Jeff Brohm during his time at Purdue, but this isn’t a good, or even decent, Wisconsin team. Paul Chryst started the season as the Badger head coach but has since been sent to a nice farm upstate where he can frolic all day with Scott Frost, Karl Dorell, Geoff Collins, and Herm Edwards (at least that’s what we tell the kids). Enter former Badger safety and defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard. Since taking the big wheel of cheese from Chryst, results have been mixed. Wisconsin smoked a dreadful Northwestern team 42-7 in his coaching debut, but then allowed an offensively inept Michigan State team to hang 34 on his defense in a 34-28 loss.last week Sophomore Braelon Allen has stepped up as the starting running back, and he’s coming off back to back 100 yard games. In fact, he’s broken the 100 yard mark 4 times this season, including a 165 yard performance against Ohio State. He’s a big, bad dude at 6’2”, 230 and has the speed to take it the distance. Allen is going to be a problem.

Purdue hasn’t been able to stop Wisconsin from running the ball down their throats during the Brohm era, but that stops on Saturday. Purdue jumps out early, holds Allen to under 100 yards and picks off Graham Mertz twice. I like Purdue big in this game if (and this is a big if) they can put points on the board early and make the Badgers chase. I’m going out on a limb for this one, but if Brohm is ever going to get over the Badgers, this is the year.

It looks like a four team race in the Big Ten.

We’re barely halfway through the season and there is not a parity in the conference. In the East, it is once again Michigan and Ohio State. Barring a Penn State upset of Ohio State it will be one of those two winning the division. In the West, our beloved Boilermakers appear to be on a collision course with Illinois of all teams, though things can get murky in a hurry. In the West it feels like anyone not named Northwestern could beat anyone else. I am counting nothing until I see what Purdue does against Wisconsin. Minnesota is in a bad spot with losses to Illinois and Purdue on its ledger. Iowa looks incapable of having enough offense to win games.

We’ll see this week if the race tightens. Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Michigan State are on bye.

The only way Iowa has a chance here is if the defense drags Ohio State down into the muck of an old fashioned Iowa puntfest. There is absolutely no way Iowa’s offense can keep up. they have scored 47 points in three Big Ten games. The Buckeyes have scored 52, 49, and 49 in their conference games.
It is always fun to see the fans of these two teams chirping at each other. It is better than actually watching the football game.
