Your first place Boilers!

Before beginning this I want to make sure Trey Palmer is safely back in Lincoln. That man was a menace last night with 297 yards from scrimmage. He was a terror for us to contain all night long and we’re lucky he didn’t get the ball back one more time thanks to Aidan O’Vick’s fourth down scramble for the game clinching first down.

Palmer is the reason it was still a ballgame, as the Purdue offense had probably its best game of the season so far. There was actual run/pass balance and Devin Mockobee continues to audition for a scholarship. I also have to shout out another walk-on in Andrew Sowinski, who is also grabbing himself an emerging role in the offense. I eve got to shout him out in person last night outside the Mollenkopf as I was walking abck to my car.

A balanced offensive attack leads Purdue to big win

After a wild second half at Ross-Ade Stadium, Purdue outlasted Nebraska 43-37 to stay tied atop the Big Ten West standings with Illinois. The Boilermakers have now won 4 straight since their second setback of the year at Syracuse. After a rocky start, the Boilermakers are hitting their stride and could be on their way to doing something special this season. Before that, let’s get into tonight’s win.

In typical Purdue fashion, they just could not make this one easy for themselves. Leading by 17 in the first half, the Huskers put up 10 straight to make it a four-point game in the third quarter.

Trey Palmer had a career night that almost ruined the Boilermakers’ night if Nebraska had got the ball one last time in the end. Palmer had 67% of Nebraska’s receiving yards AND 50% of their rushing yards tonight.

Nebraska rush yards: 121

Palmer rush yards: 60

Nebraska pass yards: 349

Palmer receiving yards: 237

Not to take anything away from him, because that is one hell of a line, but this continues the conversation about Purdue’s inability to stop the big play through the air. Looking back at Penn State and Syracuse, those teams won because they had explosive plays in key moments. It’s as simple as that. Even in games, Purdue won, like tonight, Maryland and even FAU, they got burnt by big plays. Now, Ron English has left his cornerbacks out on islands a lot this season. This coaching staff has to think about making changes in personnel or some adjustments philosophy wise or this will keep happening to them.

Maybe worse, the total time over the three touchdown drives in the second half for Nebraska was 2 minutes and 31 seconds. Purdue gave that up to a team that barely scored 14 points last week against Rutgers. It is essential for the Boilermakers to fix this if they are going to be able to sustain success throughout the end of the year.

Luckily for the Boilermakers’ defense, they came up with some turnovers to get their red-hot offense back on the field. Reese Taylor came up with the biggest one with 9 minutes left in the fourth quarter that led to a Purdue touchdown drive back down the field.

Aside from the defensive lapses, Aidan O’Connell and the offense looked about as good as they have all season. Pouring on over 600 yards of offense and if not for O’Connell’s early interception would have been a near-flawless game. The 6th year quarterback finished with 391 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air, finding his receivers at a 64% clip.

The most intriguing and encouraging aspect of the offense was the running game though. Devin Mockobee has come out of nowhere to prove himself as the Boilermakers’ most effective option out of the backfield. He ran for a career-high 178 yards and a touchdown to pace Purdue in their 217 team rushing yards. That mark is good for second best on the season, behind the Indiana State game which was 232.

Adding a good run game to an already deadly air raid is something we haven’t seen on a consistent basis out of Jeff Brohm over the last 2-3 years. He might finally have the guy to lead that charge for him and the offense now. Mockobee just has some extra juice in his runs that none of the other backs have been able to replicate.

With the offense humming like that, it is hard to think of an opponent that can match their firepower down the stretch. After tonight’s win, the Boilermakers are off to a 5-2 record, which is the best start to a season since 2007. This team is looking for a different outcome than the Tiller-led Boilers that season. Next to the Illinois Fighting Illini at the top of the Big Ten West, each game is going to be key.

Purdue needs to take some things away from this game and keep the train rolling. Next up is a foe in Wisconsin who they have not been able to beat since 2003, making it 15 consecutive losses. The Boilers will look to change that next Saturday in Madison and extend their winning streak to five straight.

Exhale

Purdue football games are never easy. Despite going up 27-10 in the first half those of us who are Purdue fans know that this game wasn’t even close to over. We were of course right. The Purdue defense was sterling in the third quarter against Maryland. This week in the third quarter against Nebraska they were the opposite of sterling, umm tarnished? Purdue gave up multiple 30+ yard passes, and one such long run, to keep Nebraska in this game.

The Purdue offense hummed along all game including having the best running day of the season. Mockobee played like a seasoned professional and was there time after time. There’s no way to say enough about the game that AOC had. Sure, he made a boneheaded interception but other than that he made big boy throws all game. Purdue salted the game away with a couple nifty catches on the last drive and were able to take knees to close it out.

Purdue now sits tied atop the Big Ten West standings with Illinois. Just like all the prognosticators predicted at the start of the season. Jace will have more on this one later tonight.

First place on the line!

The second half of the 2022 football season starts now. The first half of the season was somehow both disappointing and satisfying. It still set the stage for the second half of the year where Purdue can accomplish some pretty special things.

None of that happens without winning at home against Nebraska tonight.

Even better, it is another night home game. As far as I know, this sets the record for most home night (after 6pm local) kickoffs in one season. It is another marquee chance to show that we can be contenders in the West.

And I do think we’re contenders. I think we can get this one tonight and continue on a run to win the West and end up in Indy. That’s still a few weeks away, but it is nice to be in mid-October and have a season going well instead of falling apart.

Purdue and Nebraska will face off under the lights with two straight big ten wins a piece.

Don’t look now, but Coach Brohm has his Boilermakers making a run at the Big Ten West.

Vegas has noticed, as Purdue plays host to Nebraska, coming off two Big Ten wins of their own, with the Boilermakers as 14 point favorites against the Cornhuskers. Odds/lines subject to change. T&Cs apply. See draftkings.com/sportsbook for details.

Purdue’s two road wins in a row haven’t been the prettiest, but it’s impossible to not see the signs of a team coming to life. Aiden O’Connell appears to have healed from a midsection injury. Mershawn Rice is back in the lineup, providing AOC with a big go up and get it target that he used to the tune of a touchdown and 5 catches again Maryland. With lead receiver Charlie Jones drawing so much attention, there’s a lot of room on the field for a second wide receiver to take advantage of.

Nebraska had their own early season disappointments, culminating in firing Scott Frost despite a $14 million go away policy. They’ve now won two straight Big Ten games since, even if the games were against the two worst teams in the Big Ten not in Evanston - Rutgers and Indiana.

Purdue’s early loss to Penn State and Syracuse had Purdue reeling and near late game collapses against Florida Atlantic and Maryland has Purdue’s record not feel like a team with the Big Ten West in their hands, but a win here and Purdue will continue to have just one loss in the West with a big game on the road against Wisconsin that’s their toughest test left. The Big Ten West is definitely winnable for Coach Brohm and his Boilers.

So what happens when two 4-2 teams play under the lights? One team is destined to show themselves as a paper tiger while the other will be in the driver’s seat for the Big Ten West.

I could pretend to look into stats and say that Nebraska’s lack of an elite pass maker or even a decent defense makes them unlikely to pull off the upset, but really, you don’t have to go much past their name - Nebraska. No longer 90’s, the Cornhuskers name doesn’t carry the same concern it used to. The football team has been a disappointment for the last decade, now it’s just plain bad. The Big Ten probably should have reconsidered inviting a school to the conference based on nostalgia.

But I digress. AOC is getting hot at the right time. Their playmakers are starting to make plays, and despite a few key injuries, the Boilers will have enough to not just beat Nebraska, but to cover the two touchdown spread under the lights at Ross-Ade.d

Lincoln loves beer.

Since Nebraska has been on Purdue’s schedule every season for a while now I am starting to run out of breweries in Lincoln. Fortunately, the Cornhuskers’ struggles on the football field the last few years means that the people demand beer. In fact, you could say it was a Code Beer situation.

We have an undefeated showdown this week.

This week we have four teams on bye, so that makes for a shorter preview of the conference. Northwestern, Rutgers, Iowa, and Ohio State have the week off, though in Iowa’s case they still probably won’t find the end zone in practice.
This is a surprisingly big game in the West. I still think Minnesota is the best team in the division, but Illinois is on a roll with a lethal defense and at least some form of offense, unlike Iowa. Chase Brown and Mo Ibrahim are two great running backs for each side. These teams might finish the game in 2 hours if they run the ball well. Minnesota 24, Illinois 17

Both teams need this one if they want to harbor bowl dreams. The Terps are a good team that could not take advantage of numerous opportunities last week against Purdue. Indiana at least challenged Michigan for three quarters before fading late. An Indiana win opens the door for a bowl game because Rutgers and Michigan State are on the schedule. Maryland 27, Indiana 20

The follow up to B1G NUDE SATURDAY is a dud, and probably a Loser Leaves Town match for the postseason. The Spartans have been very bad so far. Wisconsin at least showed a spark last week, but was that because they turned the corner or because Northwestern is bad? We don’t need them turning a corner before Purdue comes to Madison next week. Wisconsin 31, Michigan State 13

Can Purdue move to 5-2 on the season?

Jumbo Heroes (3-3):

It’s nice to finally be heading back home to Ross-Ade Stadium after playing the two previous games on the road against fairly tough opponents. After winning at Minnesota and at Maryland it feels like this could be labeled a trap game for the Boilermakers. Maybe they will let their guard down against a 3-3 Nebraska team who has struggled to find themselves since they joined the Big Ten, and honestly for a long time before then as well. Nebraska fired my favorite Big Ten coach <s>Landry Clarke</s> Scott Frost and has gone 2-1 since. Those two wins though are against Indiana and Rutgers. This after losing to Georgia Southern and Northwestern earlier in the year. This Nebraska team has not impressed me.

It doesn’t seem like they’ve impressed Vegas either. Right now on Draft Kings Purdue sits as a 13.5 point favorite over the Cornhuskers. Which on its face seems high but then I gave it some thought, and discussed it on the podcast, and I actually think Purdue will win by more than this. However, Purdue could also win by two after stopping Nebraska on a game tying two point conversion. Who can even say at this point.

Kyle (3-3):

Nebraska remains a mystery as they transition away from the disastrous Frost Era, Mickey Joseph has them playing better, but I am still not sold on what they are doing.

Drew (3-3):

Nebraska has seen a post Frost thaw over the last few weeks. They managed to knock off Indiana and Rutgers, which is a step in the right direction after losing to Georgia Southern and Oklahoma (who loses to Oklahoma these days?). Casey Thompson is a decent quarterback and Trey Palmer can be an issue at wide receiver. The defense only gave up 13 to Rutgers and defensive end Garrett Nelson could be an issue for Purdue’s pieced together tackle situation.

Good teams beat teams like Nebraska and I *think* Purdue is a good team. I can see Nebraska hanging around for a half before Purdue stretches out the lead in the 3rd quarter. This is one of those games that might be too close for comfort, but only because of the basement level expectations for Cornhusker football.

Holmes (4-1 no FAU pick received):

Nebraska is on a *checks notes* winning streak?!?! Since the Frosty man was fired they’ve faced the two worst Big Ten East teams, but were able to actually close them out and not fall apart. I still think Purdue wins this, but I think the line is high. The Huskers have lost a lot of games the last few years, but rarely by multiple scores.

Purdue 24

Nebraska 17

Jace (4-2):

Playing for sole possession of first place in the Big Ten West against this Huskers team is a gift for the Boilermakers. Although it hasn’t been easy (it never is for Purdue) the Boilers have been hitting their stride a bit the last couple weeks. I think they extend their winning streak to four and take over the Big Ten West.

I just don’t know what I’m getting with this Purdue team. They’ve been bad and they’ve been decent, I’m not sure they’ve been good yet. Luckily, they are playing Nebraska so they don’t need to be that good. The Nebraska defense doesn’t scare me.
