The league did not look good in road games.

Iowa scored touchdowns? Northwestern lost to an FCS team? Nebraska lost and it wasn’t a close game? This week had a lot going on around the conference. There were a lot of blowouts, but the Big Ten West once again did not look very good. Here is your weekly recap:

Syracuse 32, Purdue 29

Purdue took the lead with just over 50 seconds left, but completely melted down with seven penalties after the moment Payne Durham crossed into the end zone. Our new friends at Syracuse were elated for the gift:

It was one of the areas I questioned coming into today as the first two weeks were (penalties aside) pretty-smooth for a Syracuse offense which never faced a deficit. The Orange struggled to run the ball and Garrett Shrader couldn’t connect as easily as he did last week but in the end he found a way to get it done. Standing in to make this throw to Oronde Gadsen II with the game on the line is something special.

Ohio State 77, Toledo 21

The Bucks simply could not be stopped on offense:

I was wishing that Ohio State had only scored 75 points last night instead of 77 points. Had the Buckeyes scored two less points, I could have said that I-75 wasn’t the only thing that ran right through Toledo. I-77 is a little more fitting though, because the interstate running north-south on the eastern side of Ohio is a lot rockier than the flat wasteland that is on the west side of the state.

Even though 77 points is A LOT of points to score, it doesn’t even rank in the top-five of all-time points scored in a game by the Buckeyes. Toledo didn’t even close to allowing Ohio State to score the most points in school history in a game, as the Buckeyes scored 128 points against Oberlin back in 1916.

Michigan 59, UConn 0

For the second straight year UConn gets shut out by a Big Ten team:

Michigan beat the snot out of UConn 59-0 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-0 on the season. The game featured a great performance by J.J. McCarthy, a record tying showing by Blake Corum, a defensive shutout, a special teams masterpiece, and much more.

Oklahoma 49, Nebraska 14

I guess some good news for Purdue fans is that Nebraska looks like a dead team walking:

We are watching Nebraska’s worst offensive line in school history. I don’t blame the players as much as the coaching staff, because it’s clear the coaches haven’t taught linemen the basics of recognizing stunts, or the fronts they’re looking at.

Washington 39, Michigan State 28

A slow start in Seattle doomed the Spartans on the road:

Washington received the ball to open the game, and it did not take long for the Huskies to open the scoring in the game. During the first drive, UW quarterback Michael Penix Jr. hit wide receiver Jalen McMillan for a 47-yard gain. Two plays later, Penix found wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk for an eight-yard touchdown. Kicker Peyton Henry made the extra point, and the Huskies led 7-0 less than four minutes into the game.

Penn State 41, Auburn 12

Going on the road and blowing out an SEC team is pretty impressive:

A 3-point favorite on the road, the Nittany Lions were expected to win by the oddsmakers, and some of the population, but no one expected the kind of game where Jordan-Hare stadium would empty out midway through the third quarter.

Southern Illinois 31, Northwestern 24

Losing to an 0-2 FCS team is a very bad look for the Wildcats:

In beautiful conditions at Ryan Field Saturday, Northwestern (1-2) fell to Southern Illinois (1-2) in ugly fashion, marking its second consecutive loss to a non-conference opponent.

The Wildcats led early, but a strong fourth quarter from the Salukis gave them the lead and they never looked back, as Southern Illinois claimed the 31-24 victory over Northwestern.

Indiana 33, Western Kentucky 30 (OT)

Indiana is basically the opposite of Purdue in that they look awful for most of the game, but are fantastic with the game on the line late:

Until Charles Campbell’s 51-yard field goal cleared the crossbar in overtime, it appeared as though the Hilltoppers would have their revenge. Indiana trailed by 8 with under 4 minutes left in the game and nothing up to that point indicated that they would have the juice for another touchdown and two point conversion.

And yet, here we are. Undefeated three weeks in. Don’t ask me how; I don’t know.

Rutgers 16, Temple 14

Rutgers is also 3-0 now. (On the Banks has no game wrap as yet)

Minnesota 49, Colorado 7

Minnesota is now my pick to win the West, as they have been dominant so far:

Mohamed Ibrahim. Death, taxes, and Mohamed Ibrahim rushing for 100 yards or more. The Gophers’ star running back blew past the century mark for the 12th straight game and scored three touchdowns to tie Darrell Thompson’s school record for career rushing touchdowns (40). After rushing for 202 yards and averaging 8.8 yards per carry against the Buffaloes, Ibrahim now has 464 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the year.

Wisconsin 66, New Mexico State 7

No problems for the Badgers this week:

Graham Mertz had himself a game as well for the cardinal and white, completing 12-of-15 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, completing passes to five different receivers. Mertz pushed his season total of touchdown passes to six, through the first three games. It took Mertz nine games to throw his sixth touchdown pass, during the 2021 season.

Iowa 27, Nevada 0

Iowa deployed “offense” this week and god was so mad He delayed the game:

Perhaps most importantly, Iowa looked alive in the passing game with Spencer Petras going 14/26 for 176 yards and a touchdown. With as full complement of wide receivers as the Hawkeyes are likely to get this season, Iowa pressed the Pack downfield, with seven of Petras’ 17 passes before the lightning delay aimed towards targets 15+ yards down the field.

Maryland 34, SMU 27

It took a late comeback, but Maryland is 3-0 and looking dangerous again:

SMU’s sensational senior wide receiver Rashee Rice — who had a whopping 11 receptions for 193 yards — lined up on the right side of the field. He slanted across the middle of the field, and senior quarterback Tanner Mordecai, knowing his team needed a touchdown to keep their hopes alive, flung a pass to his most-trusted target.

With the game on the line, Maryland junior defensive back Beau Brade leapt in the air and defended the pass, forcing an incompletion and sealing a 34-27 win for the Terps in their final nonconference game of the 2022 season.

Non-Conference Opponents:

Montana 49, Indiana State 14 - The Trees at least scored this week, but got blasted by a top 3 FCS team.

Ugh...

It is now officially a frustrating season. While Purdue did what it needed to do against Indiana State, but in losses to Penn State and now Syracuse the Boilers have absolutely shot themselves in the foot multiple times. Against Penn State it was very poor tackling. Today Purdue had an extra point blocked, it missed a two-point conversion while giving another up. It missed a field goal. It threw a pick 6. It melted down with ridiculously dumb penalties that essentially handed the Orange 14 points today because they either kept drives alive or, like at the end, set up a much shorter field.

It was a very, very rough day, and now this team is facing a ton of questions after everything looked so promising earlier in the year. Purdue is currently at 1-2, but it is a handful of plays and less than a minute from being 3-0.

I mean, come on.

I am not here to argue.

The refs were far from perfect today. Many penalties I disagreed with, others I agreed with. They missed some for both teams, they called bad ones for both teams.

But, when you take a four point lead with 51 seconds to go and receive two unsportsmanlike penalties that gave the Orange the ball on the 50, you deserve to lose, you earned it.

When it happened, I looked at my wife and said, “We will lose the game because of this.”

And here we are.

The end of the game shenanigans cast a cloud over another great Charlie Jones outing who is making a name for himself in West Lafayette.

Chuck Sizzle, who is playing himself into being a NFL Draft Pick, continued his dominance, snagging 11 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, numbers that will surely keep him at the top of the leaderboard among receivers in the nation.

The defense, played well for three quarters before the wheels fell off. A personal foul by Jack Sullivan lead to a scoring drive, where the Orange would have punted from midfield, which would have given Purdue a chance to add to their lead in the 3rd, another discipline mistake from our Boilers.

The Boiler defense focused on Sean Tucker, the standout RB from Cuse and did a great job on containing him, but the quarterback beat us with his legs, extending plays. While he was far from accurate as a passer, he made plays when they mattered for his team.

AOC had another standout performance aside from throwing a pick 6, going 39 of 55 for 424 yards and three touchdowns. While we got it done through the air, per usual, the rushing attack left much to be desired. Rushing the ball 22 times for 61 yards. Mockobee had a nice 15 yard touchdown run early.

In the end, we can look at all of the stats; who did what, the great plays that were made, the turnovers - but the true story of the contest was the number of penalties that were thrown on Purdue.

Purdue had 13 penalties for 144 yards, and two of those 13 penalties were against our leaders of the football team.

One for sure was against Payne Durham, a senior leader and a multi year starter, almost one you can live with. But, then another was reportedly against Head Coach Jeff Brohm.

This caused Purdue to kick the ball from the 10 yard line, rather than the 35, making Syracuse an immediate threat to score. The Orange had just under a minute and all three timeouts, the defense stood tall, until Shrader put a corner route on a dime, ending Purdue’s afternoon.

And that is how the cookie crumbled. It is another game Purdue has let slip away and Jeff Brohm is now 10-18 in one score games, per Purdue Sports Super fan, Keith Madderom. While many will comment and say it is an improvement, how much happier would we be if it was 18-10 instead?

Time for Purdue’s toughest non-conference game.

It is game day in upstate New York. I do not expect this to be an easy one. If Purdue can prove itself on the road against a Syracuse offense that has been very good to date, it should bode well for the rest of the season. Think of this game as a make up for the Penn State game. Purdue blew that game, and it only needed to be just a little bit better to pull off a win.

Did Purdue get better? Last week makes it hard to tell. We were expected to blow Indiana State out and did just that. Now we get to go to a harsh road environment in a loud dome. Syracuse fans are encouraged by their team’s performance so far. They since that the Orange have turned a corner after a few down years. This will be a tough one to pull off, but Purdue can do it.

Stephen returns with a beer rec.

I am not sure how much of a Purdue contingent there will be in Syracuse tomorrow, but there is apparently a good place for beer nearby. Since I am unfamiliar with the area I asked Stephen Haller from Troy Nunes is an Absolute Magician for a recommendation. His response was, “There is Willow Rock, then there is everyone else.”

Willow Rock Brewing

115 Game Rd

Syracuse, NY 13210-4216

Willow Rock is located about a mile and a half south of the football stadium, and they have several flagship bees that look quite tasty. They have a 2,000 square foot family beer hall that is family friendly, so it sounds like a good postgame stop if you’re in the area. They also have an outdoor patio that is great for fall Saturdays in upstate New York.

Congress - 4.8% ABV - An historic lager recipe updated by modern brewing practices. A light-bodied approachable beer, typical of this style, that is for anyone, at any time. Definitely more effective than Congress itself.

Breakout - 5.5% ABV - Breakout of the zone with this crushable blonde ale. Combining pilsner malt and noble hops makes this one easy drinking beer. there is nothing wrong iwth a good blonde ale.

Hoi Hoi Hoi! - 6.4% ABV - Fall y’all. Raise your mug to warm days and cool nights. Celebrate the season with a brew that boosts your spirits, with deep malt aromas and traditional lager flavors. Like a maple leaf in peak color, this reddish beauty is biscuity, malty and so endlessly quaffable, you may start speaking fluent German. Wünderbar!

Barley Crown and the Late Pumpkin - 8.7 ABV - Waiting and waiting in the pumpkin patch can really pay off. This imperial amber ale is pumpkin pie in a glass. With clove, nutmeg, caramel and cinnamon layered on boozy pumpkin all backed up with a malty amber beer.

Great Canal Collapse - 5.5% ABV - It’s history happy hour with this delicious witbier! Remembering that time back in 1907 when half a building and part of the Erie Canal collapsed, we teamed up with the Erie Canal Museum to honor all the wheat that was lost from the collapsed mill that day! Bright citrusy with a touch of coriander spice, this witbier is a perfect sipper for anywhere, especially canal-side.

This week there are 13 games around the league.

It is a 13 game week this week in the Big Ten, as Illinois is off due to them having already played three games. It will still be a tough week for the conference to go 13-0. This is the week where most of the league faces its toughest out of conference game. Three schools are going on the road to power 5 conference opponents. A couple others are on the road against tricky non-conference opponents. The MAC has not gotten its annual Big Ten pelt, but there is only one chance for that this week.

Purdue (1-1) at Syracuse (2-0) Noon, ESPN2

Troy Nunes is an Absolute Magician Preview

I don’t feel good about this one. Syracuse has two dynamic playmakers and a vastly improved passing game. In its only game against a real opponent so far Purdue struggled to tackle. This is also on the road in a loud dome. The Orange have vastly exceeded expectations so far and are a fringe top 25 team. The loss of Jalen Graham is also a big one. I think it is close, but Syracuse has the edge. Syracuse 27, Purdue 24

UConn (1-2) at #4 Michigan (2-0) Noon, ABC

UConn is better than last year, but it is a very tall ask for them to beat a Michigan team that has scored 107 points in two games. Michigan 52, UConn 10

#6 Oklahoma (2-0) at Nebraska (1-2) B1G NUDE SATURDAY, FOX

Needless to say, it has been an eventful week for Nebraska. Expectations are at an all-time low, and now they have to play the home end of an old rivalry. Will things be better under an interim regime, or will this team check out for the next few months? Oklahoma 45, Nebraska 21

Southern Illinois (0-2) at Northwestern (1-1) Noon, BTN

Southern Illinois is 0-2, but is still getting votes in the FCS Poll and they made the FCS playoffs last year. Their defense has gotten blown up so far, so even the Northwestern offense should be fine. Northwestern 31, Southern Illinois 13

Western Kentucky (2-0) at Indiana (2-0) Noon, BTN

Last season Indiana won this one on the road, but it was close. The Hoosiers have not looked good so far, especially in the first half of games. They have still won both games and a win on Saturday would get them halfway to bowl eligibility. The Hilltoppers put up 49 points last week at Hawaii, so jetlag might be a factor. Western Kentucky 24, Indiana 17

Rutgers (2-0) at Temple (1-1) 2pm, ESPN+

Temple lost to Duke, who handled Northwestern last week. A Rutgers win gets them halfway to bowl eligibility and sets up a potential bowl elimination game later against Indiana. They also still have Nebraska and Maryland later. I don’t see a path to six wins for Rutgers without a win in this one. Rutgers 28, Temple 17

#22 Penn State (2-0) at Auburn (2-0) 3:30pm, CBS

If Penn State gets this one they will be a contender in the East. They showed resiliency in winning at Purdue, but winning at Auburn is a lot tougher. Auburn is an SEC chaos agent, as they struggled with San Jose State last week. This is probably the best game in the 3:30pm slot.

Colorado (0-2) at Minnesota (2-0) 3:30pm, ESPN2

It has been over 100 years since Ohio State lost at home to a team from Ohio. The Rockets haven’t been tested yet and they did nearly shock the world in South Bend last year. It probably won’t happen, but just imagine if they sprung the upset. Ohio State 45, Toledo 17

#11 Michigan State (2-0) at Washington (2-0) 7:30pm, ABC

Even though Sparty is ranked 11th, Washington is a three point favorite. I don’t really get it. This is the first real test for either team, so it is hard to say who has an advantage. Those long trips to the West Coast for Big Ten teams are always tricky, but I think Michigan State is better. Michigan State 24, Washington 21

Nevada (2-1) at Iowa (1-1) 7:30pm, BTN

Nevada is a weird team, because they beat New Mexico State on the road and Texas State at home by double digits, but they gave up 55 points to FCS Incarnate Word last week. That was after only giving up 26 points total to the other two opponents. Iowa is the worst offense in the nation right now by a wide margin. They are 131st in scoring at 7 points per game (and four of their 14 points have come from the defense). They are averaging 158 yards per game, 131st in the nation and well behind New Mexico State. They have one touchdown so far, and it was on a 21 yard drive after a turnover. The defense has been good, giving up only 13 points, but that offense is all-time bad. Somehow Iowa is a 20.5 point favorite. Can they even score 21 points? Nevada 10, Iowa 3

SMU (2-0) at Maryland (2-0) 7:30pm, Fox Sports 1

Testudo Times Preview

It is not quite the old Pony Express days, but SMU has been high flying on offense so far. So has Maryland. This has a real possibility of being a fun shootout, and SMU is a good test for the Terps. With the Michigan schools in the next two weeks before hosting Purdue, Maryland needs this game. Maryland 45, SMU 42

Let’s jump on over to DraftKings to check out Purdue’s odds on the road.

Purdue (1-1) will travel on the road for the first time this season when they take on the Syracuse Orange (2-0).

With two dominating performances under their belt, Syracuse opens as 1.5 point favorites over Purdue, a bit of a surprise line. Odds/lines subject to change. T&Cs apply. See draftkings.com/sportsbook for details.

Purdue was able to recover from their first week loss to Penn State by dominating Indiana State 56-0, but a shut out against an FCS team isn’t enough to make Purdue favorites on the road against a Syracuse team that’s coming off back to back big wins against Louisville and UCONN.

In both games Syracuse’s offense was efficient and their defense relentless, giving up just 7 points to the Cardinals and 14 to the Huskies.

Garret Shrader in particular has been excellent. The Orange QB completed just over 50% of his passes last season, but this year, he’s near 80%. He’s thrown for 5 touchdowns and 0 turnovers. Shrader was a threat with his legs last year, running for over 700 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns on the ground. He already has 3 rushing touchdowns this season.

If Purdue is going to pull off the upset, their defensive line will continue to have to play solid, disciplined football and limit his ability to hurt them with his legs.

For Purdue, they’ll have to break through with their rushing attack. Starting running back King Doerue will be out. He’s not the only injured Boilermaker, with Broc Thompson permanently on the questionable list at WR, and fellow pass catcher Mershawn Rice a game time decision.

Not that Aiden O’Connell has had to look too far away from his lead receiver Charlie Jones this season. Jones leads Purdue with 21 catches for 286 yards on the season. Jones had 3 TD catches in one half against Indiana State.

But is Syracuse’s success an accurate assessment of their team and talent or did they play two of the worst teams in college football to start the season? Louisville isn’t the team they used to be and well, Purdue fans should be familiar with what UCONN brings to a football field after crushing them last year on the road.

Purdue failed their first tough test of the season, but their offense started clicking last week and Coach Brohm’s Boilers tends to get up for road games as long as the weather’s nice and dome’s guarantee good weather.

At the beginning of the year you wouldn’t have believed Purdue would be getting points in this game, so I’m taking them, and you should, too.

It’s time to look ahead to the Orange with Kory Sheets.

The Indiana State game was a blowout, so there is not much more to say about it. That doesn’t mean there is no Behind the Rails Podcast this week. In the last week of one podcast Kory Sheets and T-Mill talk about the Indiana State game as well as this Saturday’s upcoming trip to Syracuse. Among the highlights:

Kory is impressed with freshman Devin Mockobee and his performance against the Sycamores.

Charlie Jones has been a great addition to the offense, but does Purdue rely on him too much?

How does Purdue go against the unique 3-3-5 defense that Syracuse employs?

What should Purdue look for with Sean Tucker and Garrett Shrader as two tough playermakers?

What was the best meal coach Tiller ever gave the team?

Next week we will be back to our regular schedule of two podcasts per week, so thanks for listening as we get back into things.
