Yep. Purdue beat a top 5 team. Again.

Jeff Brohm is now 3-0 against top 5 teams during his tenure as Purdue coach.

Purdue is eligible for a bowl game before playing Indiana for the first time since 2007.

It is very likely Purdue is going to be ranked in the top 25 again this week for the second time this season and the second time since 2007.

We got to rush the field again.

We absolutely wrecked a team’s playoff chances, which is a lot of fun.

Yesterday’s win was a damn lot of fun with perfect weather and near flawless execution by Purdue in all phases of the game. It was a festive atmosphere in West Lafayette, and we can now continue into November with six wins secured while looking for more.

Can Purdue still win the West?

Is a January bowl game in Florida on the table?

What other top 5 teams want a shot at us?

It appears that Purdue football in 2021 has an M.O.: We will absolutely wreck your shit if you’re a top 5 team when you play us.

You could not have asked for a better day in West Lafayette. On the drive up there was not a cloud in the sky. Once we were parked the beer in our cooler was cold and it was great to watch some other games on our phones and drink in a parking lot. For November 6th, the weather was perfect, and you could feel it in the parking lot as everyone was vibin’.

Then there was the actual game.

My natural Purdue-ness as a fan was in full gear all game long, but in retrospect, it was a game that the Boilers controlled throughout. We should have known early when Kenneth Walker III had his first fumble of the season, forced and recovered by George Karlaftis. When a player of his caliber makes a mistake it is a big deal.

It was not the end all/be all though. Purdue went down and scored, but Michigan State answered on their next drive. Purdue appeared to take advantage with two more TDs before the half, but the Spartans scored on a well designed third down play just before halftime and then reversed Purdue just after the half by forcing their own fumble and scoring on the following possession.

Tie game, 21-21.

How many times have we seen Purdue have a double digit lead, only to lose it and fold? The 32-yard run by Payton Thorne looked like a hinge point. That was the moment. Michigan State had survived its early challenge and with 12:19 left in the third quarter. They were going to take over.

From that moment on, Purdue absolutely dominated the game.

This latest upset was a total team effort, Aidan O’Connell was flawless, throwing for an astounding 536 yards and never really coming close to an interception. He was reading the defense and the game was called perfectly for him. Purdue didn’t even need to establish a running game, as the short game was moving the ball just as well. From the point where the Spartans tied the game AOC led five consecutive scoring drives. Sure, four were for field goals, but points are points and the defense picked him up. O’Connell’s total was the third best single-game total in school history, trailing only 546 from Curtis Painter in the 2007 Motor City Bowl and 572 from David Blough vs. Missouri in 2018.

David Bell was… David Bell. At one point I was talking to my wife and I said, “you know, Bell has had a good game, but I am not sure how good he has been.” I then looked at my phone and was shocked he was over 200 yards. He’s David Bell. Can we really be surprised by him at this point? He had 11 receptions for 217 yards and a score, and it looked effortless. In the last four games he has had two of the four best receiving days in Purdue football history. His 240 against Iowa is second only to Chris Daniels against MSU in 1999. Today is now fourth, and he was three yards short of that Rondale Moore guy vs. Vanderbilt in 2019.

There are so many others to cite. Broc Thompson had his first Purdue touchdown. Jackson Anthrop weaved his way through the defense like big brother Danny was out there with his police baton directing traffic. King Doerue had a huge 46 yard catch and run. Dedrick Mackey had a gigantic interception at the goal line (that Mrs. T-Mill will attest that I called as they were lining up). Purdue’s defense held the Spartans in check for much of the second half, surrendering only a 4th quarter TD drive that served to pucker some buttholes before Purdue answered with the clinching field goal drive.

Overall, Purdue held the ball for 10 more minutes than MSU and ran 22 more plays. That makes it very easy to hold a Heisman-caliber player like Walker in check. He still had a solid game and is very worthy of the hype, but Purdue did a very good job of not letting anyone else hurt them. For the third time in four games Purdue was in firm control throughout the second half.

Today Purdue turned back the clock to 1999. Back then, Michigan State was ranked in the top 5 and undefeated after a big home win over Michigan. Drew Brees and Chris Daniels went absolutely batshit to send them back to East Lansing with a double-digit loss. Today it was just Aidan O’Connell and David Bell.

Now, for the first time in 14 years Purdue is bowl eligible before the Bucket game. There is a faint hope of winning the Big Ten West. At minimum, an 8-4 season looks very plausible at this point, and it could mean a Florida bowl game on New Year’s Day. The tangible progress of a bowl game is secured.

Let’s go get some more.

Can Purdue get a second top 5 upset?

We’ve been here before.

Purdue facing a top 5 team? Purdue with a chance to wreck the playoff hopes of the opposition? A game under the lights on a big channel with everyone watching? Say what you will about Jeff Brohm, but he is 2-0 against teams ranked in the top 5 at the time of the game. Michigan State qualifies too. They are sitting pretty in the first CFP rankings at No. 3, giving them the inside track to the promised land of losing to Alabama or Georgia.

This one won’t be easy. We’re facing one of the most dominant individual player sin all of college football. We’re facing a team that has been in the fire and won close games. Purdue’s best shot is to play clean, not turn the ball over, and hope for a let down after the Spartans won a big rivalry game just a week ago.

What does the crew think will happen?

Jumbo Heroes (4-4) Says:

There appears to be a group of people on the internet who don’t think Michigan State is for real. That they’re a paper tiger and that it sets up nicely for Purdue to take down another to[ 5 team. I’m not sold on that idea. Maybe they are right because MSU has played a lot of close games, barely beating Indiana and needing overtime to beat Nebraska. However, MSU has one of the best running backs in the county and run defense is a current weakness of this Purdue team. Can the Purdue offense control the time of possession like they did last week and keep the MSU offense off the field? That’s Purdue’s best hope. I think this one will be close but ultimately Purdue just doesn’t have enough in the tank.

We’re going to get run in this one. Purdue has been competitive in every game so far, but Michigan State does everything good Purdue is bad at. They look too much like Wisconsin, and I mean very good, win-the-West-at-10-2 Wisconsin, than I like. Purdue’s best shot is that O’Connell avoids picks and finishes drives, but the offense has three touchdowns total in the last three home games. Thank God for Northwestern and Indiana in a few weeks. Michigan State 31, Purdue 13

This is a tough one. Michigan State is coming off their biggest win in recent memory and are currently No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings. Purdue isn’t going to have a better shot to spoil something like this. The effectiveness of Purdue’s run defense will be the key to this game, which is a tall task against Kenneth Walker III. Walker will get his yards, but I anticipate the Boilermakers to keep pace against Michigan State’s last place pass defense in the Big Ten this year. I was going to go with Sparty, but I think Purdue covers the +3 and the OVER 53 hits. You can also place bets on Saturday’s game here.

Drew (3-4) Says:

Purdue was able to play it conservative on offense while Nebraska did Nebraska things and handed them the game on a silver platter. Michigan State won’t best themselves, if Purdue wants an upset, they’re going to have to take it from Sparty. At the end of the day, Michigan State’s run game is too much to overcome. Purdue hangs around, but does threaten.

Who some some oak aged beer?

With Michigan State being in the East Division we don’t see them as often as we used to. In fact, four of the last five games with them have been in East Lansing, and they have only come to West Lafayette just once since 2009, and that was in 2014. That means there are still a lot of breweries to explore there, unlike in the West where I am running out of places.

And if it can be described as “artisanal”, it has to be good.

Located roughly half a mile from Spartan Stadium, Jolly Pumpkin has one location in East Lansing with several others around the state of Michigan and even in Chicago. They began brewing in 2004 and pride themselves on a slower, more meticulous brewing process. It pays off in high quality beer. Most of their beers are aged in oak barrels, so you often get a higher ABV as a result.

Oro – 8% ABV, 30 IBU – This golden ale is aged in large oak casks and refermented in the bottle. It is more of a Belgian Gold, which sounds absolutely delicious. They describe it as “spicy and peppery”.

Blanca – 4.8% ABV, 15 OBU – If you’re something not quite as heavy this white ale sounds very good. It is a lower calorie farmhouse style with orange peel and coriander. Along with their Oro, it is a year-round beer.

Bam Bierie – 4.5% ABV, 24 IBU – This is more of a straight up farmhouse and more of a lighter option. God bless these people for not concentrating on IPAs. It is naturally cloudy and is can conditioned. It also spends two months in oak casks.

Noel – 9% ABV, 22 IBU – Their seasonal winter ale, this has some stank on it at a 9%. It takes six months in oak to finalize this beer, and has a wealth of flavors thanks to the caramel malts and more.

All 14 teams play this week, and three can be eliminated from bowl contention.

The dream is still alive! Am I talking about Purdue winning the Big Ten West? Well, of course that is still alive, as we technically could go 7-2. I am referring to the real dream, where all seven teams go 4-5 in the Division and we get a 7-way tie for the division crown

Let’s face it, we all want that to happen.

In reality, this week has a lot of clear favorites and not many toss-up games. Michigan State at Purdue is likely the closest thing to a toss-up we have. All 14 teams are in action again, so let’s get to it.

#5 Ohio State (7-1, 5-0) at Nebraska (3-6, 1-5) B1G NUDE SATURDAY, FOX

Nebraska can officially become the first bowl ineligible team in the conference, and at this point it would almost be merciful. They have lost all six games by a single score, but they have played top teams tough in Oklahoma and Michigan. Ohio State could be walking into a trap here. If the Cornhuskers ever put together a complete game they’ll bite someone. Until proven otherwise, however…Ohio State 45, Nebraska 28

To me, Illinois is one of the more fascinating teams in the conference. They can look good for stretches and have a decent defense. They aren’t THAT far from 6-3 having blown games against Rutgers, Purdue, and Maryland because of a crappy offense. They went to Penn State and won. They probably aren’t going to beat the Gophers, who have been a completely different team since the Bowling Green loss. Minnesota isn’t dropping this one when they have a real shot at winning the division. Minnesota 27, Illinois 16

Wisconsin is another team that has looked a lot better in recent weeks. They stifled both Purdue and Iowa defensively. The struggles early against Penn State and Notre Dame appear to be over. They are rounding into form and a better, but still not great Rutgers team might just be a speed bump for them. Rutgers needs two wins for a bowl, but that is what Indiana and Maryland are for. Wisconsin 24, Rutgers 10

Testudo Times Preview

This is probably the most lopsided “rivalry” in college football. They have played 44 times, so several before Maryland was in the Big Ten, and the Nittany Lions are 40-3-1 in the series. The Terrapins did win last year and are at home. After a great start Penn State is struggling and Maryland may have gotten a spark last week. I think they can spring a mild upset here. Maryland 27, Penn State 24

My 7-5 original season pick is very much alive. Michigan State 31, Purdue 13

#22 Iowa (6-2, 3-2) at Northwestern (3-5, 1-4) 7pm, BTN

Did we break Iowa? Are they on their way to a full Zook (6-0 start, followed by 0-6 finish)? This is a team with an absolutely broken offense at the moment. Fortunately, they now get a Northwestern team that can’t score, either. This game could end in negative integers. There will be punts. There will likely be turnovers. There will be a lot of folly and eye-bleedingly bad offensive play. Iowa 10, Northwestern 3

Indiana (2-6, 0-5) at #7 Michigan (7-1, 4-1) 7:30pm, FOX

I said all offseason that Indiana was wildly, hilariously overrated when some people had them in the top 10, and I was right. I didn’t think they would be THIS bad though. They are the lone team winless in conference play and there will be no bowl game if they can’t beat a disappointed Michigan team this week. The Hoosiers did end a 24 game losing streak to the Wolverines last year, but they have not won in Ann Arbor since 1967. That won’t end this year. Michigan 38, Indiana 10

We can do all 5.. right?

Purdue is only 2.5 point under dogs according to Vegas. A surprise? A bit so. MSU, a atop 5 team in the nation and just catapulted themselves into the conversation for the college football playoffs.

But, can the Boilers be Spoilers?

If these things happen, I think so.

Control the clock, similar to Iowa Game - Purdue needs to work the clock, control the ball and keep the ball away from that potent MSU running game. Against Iowa, we did that exact thing and it turned out great. If Sparty gets the ball, they will run the clock and control it themselves, a game of keep away may be in store .

Fineran to get back on track - Mitchell Fineran has struggled in recent weeks after starting the season with his hair on fire. There have been several missed kicks. If we want to win this game, we cannot afford to miss kicks in plus territory.

Limit turnovers & force turnovers - The defense has been forcing plenty of turnovers. But, the offense has been reciprocating. We need to win the turnover battle, no bad interceptions and to force pressure on the quarterback when the Spartans pass.

Stop the run - Kenneth Walker III has been the epitome of a perfect transfer in the age of the transfer portal. This is the most obvious one, we have to stop him. Do so, and win the game. This is a tall task for a team that was just ran over by Wisky a couple weeks ago.

Outcoach Mel Tucker - Mel Tucker has silenced the doubters this season. Coach Brohm has shown that he generally coaches his best game when Purdue is playing a highly ranked team. Can he do it again against Coach Tucker? Coach Tucker has been terrific this year, especially late in games.

Here come the Spartans.

It is Michigan State week, and the Spartans are coming with one of the best running backs in the nation. That makes this an extra fun podcast, as we get to hear from one of the best running backs in Purdue history. The Behind the Rails podcast with Kory Sheets is back, and we get to talk about Michigan State this week. This includes:

Kenneth Walker III is a “stallion” in the words of Kory, and he will be a tough matchup for the Purdue defense.

How much of a disruptive force is George Karlaftis and how does that help he Purdue defense, both this week and overall.

What getting bowl eligibility this early means in the long run and Kory’s own experience in bowl games.

What do we need from the Purdue offense, especially with an improved running game.

As always, this one was a lot of fun, so we hop you enjoy.
