Give it up for Wisconsin’s virtual perfect game.

I have to give it up to the Wisconsin defense, really. The Badgers, like everyone else in the conference, got three non-conference games. They did not give up a single point in any of them. One Jonathan Taylor touchdown would have been enough in each, but he now has three Bundys and the Badgers have the best defense in the conference.

They lead off the Whistlestop Tour.

Wisconsin 48, Kent State 0

The Badgers have now given up 29 points total in five games, which is about as impressive as you can get in modern football:

Taylor although would not return to the game following his fifth score, finishing with 19 carries for 186 yards and three receptions for 29 yards.

This was Taylor’s 27th career game with 100 or more rushing yards. Taylor also moved into third place all-time at Wisconsin, with 4,916 yards, passing Melvin Gordon.

Taylor has done so in less than two and a half seasons.

Ohio State 34, Michigan State 10

The Buckeyes are probably elated that Purdue is 0-2 and they won’t meet them in the Big Ten championship game:

On Saturday night, both the crowd and the home team’s jerseys were blacked out as the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes hosted their first night game of the season as Mark Dantonio’s No. 25 Michigan State Spartans came to Columbus for OSU’s homecoming game.

However, the Buckeyes’ offense was anything but blacked out following the first 15 minutes, as Justin Fields and J.K. Dobbins paced the home team to a 34-10 victory against what had been the nation’s No. 7 defense.

For the Spartans, it was another case of not having enough offense.

Penn State 35, Purdue 7

Penn State really went on cruise control after taking an early 28-0 lead:

For the first month of the season many Penn State fans, myself included, were decrying the lack of the penetration the defensive line was getting both in the run and pass games. Well, whatever the unit figured out against Maryland has clearly stuck. The Wild Dogz (TM) were incredible against Purdue, recording 13 tackles for loss and 10 sacks, which is one shy of a program record. Yetur Gross-Matos looked every bit the All-American caliber player that he is and Shaka Toney showed his prowess as a lethal pass rusher. Add in strong showings from Fred Hansard and Robert Windsor and you have a recipe for success.

Michigan 10, Iowa 3

I cannot believe Michigan scored 10 points int he first 7 minutes and decided to sit on it:

Shea Patterson had an awesome showing last week against a dreadful Rutgers team, but was back to inconsistent play in the game against Iowa. He finished the day with 147 yards on 14-of-26 passing attempts and an interception. A chunk throw to Nico Collins in the first quarter for 51 yards accounts for more than a third of his output on the day. For a good part of this game, the offensive gameplan was not terrible and the offensive line was holding up against a physical Iowa front, but Patterson continues to not process quickly enough and hold onto the football too long. People want Josh Gattis to dial up all of these pass plays down the field, but much of the time when it is there Patterson does not see it.

For Iowa, three points is bad even for Ferentz:

Eight sacks. Eight penalties. Seven punts. One giant pathetic performance from the offense.

Maryland 48, Rutgers 7

The Terrapins are a Jekyl/Hyde team, getting shut out last week, but exploding for 48 points this week:

on the opening play of the second half, running back Javon Leake returned the kickoff 100 yards for the touchdown, cutting across the field while turning up the right sideline with a convoy of blockers who paved the way to the endzone.

Just over two minutes later, fellow backfield mate Anthony McFarland Jr. took a handoff 80 yards to the house to give the Terps a 41-7 lead.

The Terps had an abundance of chunk plays on Saturday in their 48-7 win over the Scarlet Knights — their first Big Ten victory of the season.

Rutgers continues the aimless, coachless existence:

Of course the day did not begin without drama. About an hour prior to kickoff, we found out that not only would Art Sitkowski not play as he contemplated a redshirt, but Junior Captain Raheem Blackshear would not be in action either. As reported on the BTN broadcast and also nj.com, Blackshear told interim Head Coach Nunzio Campanile shortly before the game he planned to redshirt this season, having already played the maximum four games.

What do you know, RU had the ball first. Rutgers drove the ball well on their first drive against the Maryland defense without Raheem. Campanile’s playcalling proved quite effective on the first drive. Through a mix of runs by starting quarterback Johnny Langan and Isaih Pacheco with one pass to Daevon Robinson, RU moved the ball down to the Maryland 20 yard line. Unfortunately in what was a microcosm of the day, Justin Davidovicz’s 37 yard field goal attempt was tipped, still reached the crossbar, yet no good when it bounced the wrong way. Still though, Rutgers felt good about themselves for well ... a moment anyway.

The triumphant return of the Gophers’ rushing attack. The Minnesota ground game against Illinois looked a lot like the 2016 version, when Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks last made for one of the most formidable running back tandems in the Big Ten. Well, Homecoming at the University of Minnesota was a homecoming sorts for Smith and Brooks, who combined for 322 rushing yards and two touchdowns against the Fighting Illini.

For Illinois, the Illini continue to run out the clock on the Lovie Smith era:

This is not progress.

It’s year four. Against a good, not great Gophers team. Yet, here we are, getting trucked for 500+ yards. Two 100-yard rushers. Minnesota barely needed to pass the ball.

That’s a tough pill to swallow for Illini fans. I think the fans know what they’re getting with Lovie. This was inevitable.

The time to change is now. Josh Whitman better be on the phone back-channeling to find the next head coach. This was inexcusable.

The offense failed to connect on a single throw down the field.

Let’s be honest, it wasn’t THAT bad.

It could have been worse today.

Less than 16 minutes into a 60 minute game Purdue was behind 28-0. Penn State had the ball four times and scored four times. The only reason it was not worse was because they decided not to go for two four times to make it 32-0. At the point where Pat Freiermuth crossed the goal line after receiving a pass from Sean Clifford the Nittany Lions had 225 yards of offense and Purdue had -4 yards and a single first down. It really looked like a bloodbath was on our hands, especially with Purdue players dropping like flies. At one point I am pretty sure I was third in line to play receiver, and I was standing in a Wal-Mart in Greenwood.

To make matters worse, after gaining a total of two yards in five plays following the Freiermuth score, Purdue had to punt back to the Nittany Lions trailing 28-0 and it looked like it was only going to get worse. That’s when Simeon Smiley intercepted Clifford and had a nice return. Jack Plummer then had a 43 yard pass to David Bell, setting up a later touchdown pass from Plummer to Amad Anderson Jr.

That only made it 28-7 with 7:18 left in the second, but it at least gave Purdue a chance, however small. From there, a shorthanded defense did its job. Even with Cam Allen gone following a targetting call and Anthony Watts leaving after an injury, the defense stiffened and held Penn State to nothing for six straight possessions.

I don’t think we can give too much credit to this. Purdue’s defense has been an issue all year, especially as games have worn on. Penn State was moving with impunity to this point gaining 242 yards before Smiley’s interception. On the following six drives it gained 119 yards, 58 of which came before a missed field goal before halftime. The defense at least gave the offense a chance at that point.

Unfortuantely, the offensive line was unable to reciprocate. If we’re going to praise the defense the offensive line deserves criticism. It was beyond awful. Grant Hermanns and Matt McCann on the edge at tackle would have been better served had they stood still and done nothing, or at least fallen down in advance of Penn State’s pass rush. Plummer was sacked 10 times and pressured an unknown number of times. Shaka Toney got him three times. Yetur Gross-Matos had two sacks and was at least breathing over Plummer’s shoulder when he had to take a leak at halftime. Plummer was either running for his life or chicking the ball so he could get rid of it all day. That would be why Purdue had 104 yards of total offense, 62 of which came on our single scoring drive.

Still, the defense kept giving the ball back, only for Plummer to scramble for three plays before punting it back. It really could have been a lot worse. I have to credit the defense, beleagured and injured as it was, for consistently giving the offense a chance. The line was just incapable of protecting Plummer at all.

This is why I am encouraged though. Purdue was grossly outmatched. It had three wide receivers available (Anderson, Bell, and Jackson Anthrop) that had caught a pass before today. The way the game started it looked like the Nittany Lions were going to hang 60+ like the last time they played us. Instead, Purdue fought. We didn’t win, but we made damn sure the final 45 minutes were not going to be easy.

That gives me some hope going forward. Yes, this team, right now, can make a bowl game. to do so, it has to beat Maryland next week. Sure, the Terrapins blew out Rutgers today, but Rutgers is awful even by Rutgers standards. Beat the Terps and we get to play an Iowa team that scored only three points today with a coach that thinks the missionary position is too wild and crazy. Then we would get Illinois, who is tragically still Illinois.

We can win the next three games even with the current players available.

Why not carry it further? After that, we have Nebraska and Northwestern who combined to struggle to 23 total points today against each other. Then we get Indiana, who is Indiana.

There are seven games left this season, and I absolutely believe Purdue is capable of winning six of them even in its current state. I believe that because of the fight it showed today.

If it wins five and makes a bowl it would be huge for 2020.

It’s a brewery less than 2 miles from Beaver Stadium.

Pennsylvania has some of the more archaic alcohol laws in the country, especially when it comes to finding a place to buy beer. Fortunately, you can still go to the source and buy it right at the brewery. Penn State might be in the Big Ten, but this is the first time they have had their own Friday Drankin’ profile since we haven’t played the Nittany Lions since 2016. Let’s take a look at the closest brewery to Beaver Stadium.

Happy Valley Brewing Company

137 Elmwood St.

State College, PA 16801

Happy Valley Brewing Company is 1.6 miles from the stadium just off of U.S. 322 in State College. It is located in the old Klinger Farms barn, and Klinger Farms was established way back in 1814. Like most breweries they offer a solid food lineup, but their beers look to be pretty good. Here are some of their best looking options:

Tailgater APA – 4.7% ABV, 30 IBU - Our new twist on Happy Valley’s favorite Pale Ale…the zesty blast of flavor from fresh blood orange purée pairs perfectly with the bright citrusy hop aroma, and dry, refreshing finish. Enjoy this beer with a sandwich at your local barn or share it…with 106,572 of your closest friends.

Craftsman Brown Ale – 5.2% ABV, 20 IBU - Deep, mahogany brown color harmonizes perfectly with a nutty, toffee-like aroma and taste. Not the least bit cloying, but the “biscuity” malt flavors linger well into the next sip… and the next… and the next…

Springtail Ale Summer Session – 4.3% ABV - Welcome to the Barn’s newest permanent resident~ our crisp session ale is the right blend of malty and sweetness that combines on your palate to offer hints of the tropical and peach. ~ This ale offers the right amount of refreshment for those hard-working days outside~ enjoy it!

Plum Picker Kolsch – 4.5% ABV - Much like Happy Valley’s weather in the summer ~ a kölsch is a study in subtle indecision- is it an ale? Is it a lager?… the question always remains for beer aficionados. We took our kölsch to a new level with a hint of plum. As an ale, it has broad, sweet flavors. The traditional lagering process keeps these flavors in check and contributes a dry quality that, while not as snappy as proper lagers, sets a Kölsch apart from other ales. Its subtle flavors & moderate alcohol make this style a great SUMMER session beer.

They also have some other beers, including one coming up called “Sain’t Misbehavin”, which I can only assume will be launched with this:

Here is a look at this week’s Big Ten slate.

Only one team is off this week, and that is Indiana. Everyone else is in play with one game being a top 25 face off. This is the week we start to see some teams begin to pull away in each division. Ohio State can take firm control of the East at 3-0. Wisconsin is the favorite in the West, but Iowa and Minnesota can stay undefeated to push them.

Kent State (2-2) at #8 Wisconsin (4-0) Noon, ESPNU

Bucky’s 5th Quarter Preview

Wisconsin has outscored its non-conference opponents 110-0 so far, so can they pitch a complete shutout of their opponents? I think so, because Kent State is… not good. Wisconsin 55, Kent State 0

Purdue (1-3, 0-1) at #12 Penn State (4-0, 1-0) Noon, ESPN

Black Shoe Diaries Preview

I don’t think Purdue wins this. If it does, it would be in a similar style to the Ohio State upset last year where the Buckeyes gained a ton of yards, but couldn’t produce points in the red zone. I think they got something like 6 points on 5 red zone trips because of a missed field goal, and a few fourth down stops. It is hard to see Purdue winning this game unless Penn State makes a ton of errors and turnovers, and the Boilers are dead last in the Big Ten in turnover margin, having gotten just two and given up 10. I do think we can at least cosmetically make it better with some late drives and the freshmen show some fight. Penn State 45, Purdue 24

#14 Iowa (4-0, 1-0) at #19 Michigan (3-1, 1-1) Noon, FOX

This should be a very interesting game, because Michigan fans are ready to melt down after what happened against Wisconsin. If they drop this one they are in danger of losing more conference games than they win because Penn State, Michigan State, and Ohio State still remain on the schedule. Iowa can also make a move into the top 10 with a victory, thus making their inexplicable home loss to Purdue in a few weeks that much more exciting. Iowa 24, Michigan 21

Maryland (2-2, 0-1) at Rutgers (1-3, 0-2) Noon, BTN

Yes, this is a Big Ten game. No, it probably won’t matter at all in the Big Ten standings. Maryland is an impressive freefall after being briefly ranked. Rutgers is starting the coaching cycle anew after winning just 8 games in four years. I still can’t believe that one of those wins was over Purdue. As for this game, Maryland wins. Maryland 31, Rutgers 17

Is Lovie Smith next on the chopping block? Minnesota has not been pretty, but they have four single possession wins and anyone would take that. They are looking for a modicum of revenge here too after Illinois ran them out of Champaign last season. I don’t think that happens again, as Tanner Morgan is playing some really good football right now. Minnesota 38, Illinois 21

If Purdue is going to make a bowl game (and yes, I think we can still make a bowl game) it has to beat both of these teams. Neither has looked very good so far, but at least Nebraska has shown a bit of an offense. Hunter Johnson has been a disaster for Northwestern at quarterback. They can’t move the ball at all, so if Northwestern wins this Nebraska can freak out. Nebraska 27, Northwestern 13

Here is your top 25 matchup of the week, and Michigan State has usually played Ohio State pretty close over the years. The Buckeyes are looking rather impressive this year and there is no Purdue to stop them since it is unlikely we’re going to make the Big Ten championship game. I don’t think anyone is on the same level as them in the conference. Ohio State 38, Michigan State 17

Purdue is a massive 28-point underdog at Penn State on Saturday. That is a huge number. Against Ohio State last year Purdue was only a 13.5-point underdog. This line started around 16.5 and skyrocketed with the news that Elijah Sindelar and Rondale Moore would be out. Even in the first game of the Brohm era, going against Lamar Jackson with zero expectations, Purdue was “only” a 26-point underdog. With a freshman QB making his first road start in a daunting venue expectations can only be so high.

I don’t think any Purdue fan expects a win this weekend. It has been a rough season so far, made worse by terrible injury luck and a porous pass defense. The Boilers showed a lot of heart last week in making a comeback on the Gophers. Most fans have settled into the attitude of “the freshmen will be good some day, but they are still freshmen.” It is a fair assessment to take. There will be plays this Saturday when the majority of our offense will be freshmen taking the field against one of the Big Ten’s best teams.

That’s what makes this game interesting to me. Almost everyone is expecting a blowout with good reason. The longer Purdue makes this competitive the more excited we will be for the future. In the unlikely event Purdue somehow wins it would even erase much of the concern from the slow start to the year.

Penn State Nittany Lions

2018 Record: 9-4, 6-3 Big Ten East

Last Penn State win: 62-24 at Purdue on 10/29/2016 (Most points ever for a visiting team at Ross-Ade Stadium)

Head Coach: James Franklin (49-21 in 6th season at Penn State, 73-36 in 9th season overall)

2019 so far for Penn State

The Nittany Lions have been mostly dominant so far. They are coming off of a 59-0 road win at Maryland that wasn’t even that close. They also have huge wins over Idaho and Buffalo, but were tested in a somewhat ugly 17-10 win over Pittsburgh at home. Pittsburgh then struggled to beat FCS Delaware, proving that college football is and always will be a dumb sport.

What concerns me greatly is that Penn State has the second best passing offense in the Big Ten at 316 yards per game. The only one better than theirs? Purdue’s at 351 yards per game (heavily weighted by the departed Sindelar). They will go against the worst pass defense in the Big Ten, as Purdue is giving up 296.5 yard per game, almost 23 yards worse than the No. 13 defense in Maryland (which was just shredded by Penn State).

The Nittany Lions clearly have their eyes on a larger prize this season. They have these annual big three games with Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State coming up for East supremacy as well as a night game in Iowa City. They are a Big Ten contender and Purdue is merely hoping to walk a narrow path of wins over Maryland, Illinois, Nebraska, Northwestern, and Indiana to a third straight bowl game.

Who to Watch on Offense

Sean Clifford – QB – Meet the big Ten’s best passer now that Sindelar is hurt. Clifford has thrown for 1,179 yards and 9 TDs against just one interception so far. He also is second on the team in rushing with 167 yards and a TD. He threw his only pick of the season against Maryland last week, but still had nearly 400 yards passing. He is a brutally efficient passer who completed nearly 84% of his passes last week. Given that Tanner Morgan was even better last week against Purdue this is a major concern. Purdue’s secondary must be night and day better than last week or this game will be over quickly.

KJ Hamler – WR – Hamler is a big play threat with 16 receptions for 353 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is very similar to Rashod Bateman, who toyed with the Purdue secondary last week. Since the Penn State offensive line has given up just 6 sacks we have to hope this is the breakout George Karlaftis game.

Journey Brown – RB – Penn State’s offense is very balanced with 774 rushing yards, and they have come from a variety of backs. Brown leads the team with 196 yards and 3 scores, but Devyn Ford and Noah Cain have both gone over 100 yards rushing for the season so far, as has Clifford at quarterback. That means, for fun, this is an offense that will keep Purdue guessing.

Who to Watch on Defense

It is going to be extremely difficult to keep Penn State under 40 in this game, so perhaps our only chance is a wild shootout where they freshmen on offense just all break out at the same time. That seems unlikely with a pretty strong defense. We’re not going to get a lot of help from our defense when we’re the worst team in the conference in turnover margin at -8. They also have a great run defense at 68 yards per game and a solid pass defense that has 15 sacks.

Yetur Gross-Matos – DE – Gross-Matos leads the team with 3.5 sacks on the season and 5.5 tackles for loss. Purdue has mostly avoided sacks with quick passes, but Gross-Matos can have a career day against an offensive line that is still gaining experience.

Micah Parsons – LB – I know it is shocking, but Penn State has a very good up and coming linebacker. Parsons is only a sophomore, but he leads the team with 22 tackles and has 4 for loss. He plays all over the field and can defend the run or the pass well.

John Reid – CB – Reid has a pair of interceptions on the season and is a very good 5th year cornerback. He also has 10 tackles and a sack, so the Nittany Lions are not afraid to use him on the corner blitz.

Who to Watch on Special Teams

KJ Hamler – PR/KR – As if defending Hamler wasn’t bad enough on offense. He is a dynamic returner that is a threat to break a special teams return at any time.

Jake Pinegar – K – They have not had to call on him much yet, but Pinegar is a perfect 4 for 4 on the season in field goal attempts.

Game Outlook

Everything about this game screams mismatch for Purdue. You have a versatile offense that is good at spreading the ball around against a woeful pass defense. You have a defensive line good at getting pressure against a bad offensive line and a freshman quarterback. You have an experienced, talented team going against a team that is missing most of its best players on both sides of the ball.

This could get very ugly.

Let’s be honest here: Purdue is going to have to play a near perfect game against a Penn State team that comes out flat and has a lot of mistakes in order to get a win here. Even then, it may not be enough. I doubt they will be looking ahead to next week against Iowa. Pittsburgh was able to keep it close because they threw for 372 yards, but could not convert that yardage into points. They mostly held Penn State in check and failed to convert on their scoring opportunities. They also have a much better defense than Purdue.

As I said above, unless the secondary is night and day different than it was last week Purdue has pretty much no chance. I am watching this game mostly to see how the freshmen respond. Can they at least keep it close for a half? Anything beyond that feels like a win.
