That’s two in a row as the Boilermakers head into the bye week.

Purdue grabbed its first ever win in Lincoln thanks to a pair of TDs from DJ Knox and an all-around solid game from David Blough. Let’s see what Twitter had to say about it.

The Boilers get their first ever win at Nebraska.

Last week Purdue was pretty much in control throughout. Boston College scored on its second drive to tie it, but from there Purdue’s defense put on the clamps and didn’t give up anything until late in the fourth quarter.

Today was different. It was about recovery. Purdue had to answer a lot of different challenges throughout. There is no question Nebraska is not the Nebraska of old. This loss marked the first time in their history they have lost eight consecutive games. Still, there is some cachet in winning at Nebraska. They have a passionate fanbase that makes it tough to play.

Purdue was able to respond with three straight scoring drives. DJ Knox tied it with a huge 42-yard run, then the defense was able to tee off a bit. Knox nearly had another TD that was poached by David Blough and Spencer Evans sent us into halftime with a pair of field goals.

It looked like Purdue was going to be in full control when Brycen Hopkins scored on a nice misdirection play. Instead, that started a stretch where neither team could get a stop. Nebraska practically raced down the field for a JD Spielman TS in just two minutes. Purdue recovered and had a 90-yard TD drive capped twice by Knox as he had the TD and the two-point conversion. Nebraska took 47 seconds to score, but again Purdue recovered.

Coming into the game Purdue had given up 10 points total in the third quarters of its games. This was a huge departure from the Hope-Hazell era where we seemed to average 10 third quarter points given up per game. Nebraska had 14 today, but Purdue had an answer. When Markell Jones scored on the first play of the fourth quarter (after a boost from some helpful penalties) it looked like Purdue had it.

It was only the beginning of a wild quarter. Nebraska only scored once, but it happened in 1:52 and they had plenty of chances. Purdue was finally stopped and Nebraska had us truly reeling before Simeon Smiley had his first career interception. Nick Holt was masterful in his blitz calling to keep Adrian Martinez off balance. He burned us with his feet a few times and Devine Ozigbo was killing us, but we did just enough. All told, Nebraska had 582 yards of offense, but three failed fourth down conversions, the interception, and 136 yards of penalties undid them.

We cannot underestimate this win. After the 0-3 start it looked like any bowl game was impossible. Now we have the “easiest” game left next to get to 3-3 before a home game against Ohio State. It is a great recovery when Purdue could have folded and played for the future.

We had several guys that performed well today. Blough was great with 328 yards passing and 38 rushing. Knox had 87 yards and a pair of TDs. Hopkins was over 100 yards receiving with 103 and a score. Rondale Moore had a quiet 85 yards receiving, but a big 40 yard play that shifted things. Even walk-on fullback Alexander Horvath got involved with a pair of catches for 28 yards and two firsts downs.

What’s fun is that this was a double-digit road win, but we still have some things to clean up. There were a ton of drops today as Jared Sparks, Isaac Zico, and Terry Wright had some big ones. The defense was gashed in the final 20 minutes. We also had our own fair share of penalties.

Those are things to look at in the break, however. Now we get a week off and the program is reenergized. Can we get four more wins to get a bowl? It is possible, but not easy. Things are coming together though. Blough is playing some very good football and this is only the second time under Brohm we have cracked 40 points. Since his Western Kentucky teams usually hit 45 without breaking a sweat we finally got to see a glimpse of it today. The offense was rolling for much of the game, and it really seems to be rounding into form.

Purdue football is certainly always interesting. At the start of the game we all watched as Nebraska easily marched down the field for a quick touchdown. We mentioned it on the most recent podcast and in our predictions but we thought one of the keys was going to be preventing Nebraska from getting off to a hot start. We wanted to break them. Purdue didn’t EXACTLY do that but the rest of the second half was pretty close. After that quick seven Nebraska wouldn’t put the ball in the endzone until the third quarter. Purdue meanwhile used a steady diet of DJ Knox and the tight ends to put 20 first half points on the board. A couple stalled drives leading to two field goals left us all a little nervous, we are Purdue fans after all. Turns out we had nothing to worry about.

Both teams came out of the half doing nothing but scoring as defense became optional. It made for some exciting football including of course some great catch and runs by Rondale Moore. Possibly my favorite play of the game was the DJ Knox two point conversion. It was just such a beautiful play call and put Purdue up 42-21 and a full three scores which is always important.

Huge credit goes to the offensive line for protecting David Blough very well today. Brohm even had enough room to get, I believe, three big third down conversions with his legs. The defense made just enough plays in the second half to keep the game far enough out of reach. Simeon Smiley made a great interception as Nebraska was trying to drive to go down just seven with plenty of time left. After Purdue continued to go three and out the Purdue defense made two crucial fourth down steps to prevent Nebraska from getting any closer.

This marks the first time that Nebraska has lost 8 games in a row dating back to last season. Something is rotten in Nebraska. They committed over 100 yards in penalties and they committed them at dumb times. Purdue benefited greatly from these boneheaded plays so we will take it. They’ve got a talented QB and a talent RB so the offensive future looks bright there if they put it together.

For Purdue they now will enjoy a bye week and try to maintain this momentum as they look toward Illinois on Oct. 13th. Purdue sits at 2-3 with plenty of room to grow. Things are looking up for Purdue and it’s all thanks to the coaching staff finding what can work for the talent Purdue has.

This was an obvious choice.

The city of Lincoln, Nebraska made it a very easy choice this week for Friday Drankin’. There are five small breweries within walking distance of Memorial Stadium on the campus of Nebraska, but the closest one is literally a half mile walk away and it has a very friendly name.

Boiler Brewing Company

129 N. 10th Street, Suite 8

Lincoln, NE

I mean, how could I not pick a place called Boiler Brewing Company for this feature? I think it is required by law. Boiler Brewing Company has been in business for a little over two years and boasts that it is Nebraska born and brewed. Brewmaster Tim Thomssen is a Nebraska native that was a metalworker before establishing his own brewery. the brewey even has its own Boiler Society, but there is no word on if Purdue alums get autmatic memberships. The tap room serves both beer and food and looks like a very cozy place to spend an evening.

Now, onto the beer.

Bour-ben German Chocolate Cake Batter - 12% ABV - We know this guy named Ben Sintek. He’s the Big Ben of Beer- navigating time in search of the newest, greatest beers. Among other beers, Ben loves Barrel Aged, Double Mashed Russian Imperial Stouts. So, it’s only fitting that this beer was named for Ben! Double Mashed RIS aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels with Toasted Organic Coconut Flakes, Artisanal Cacao Nibs from Sweet Minou, and Ugandan Vanilla Beans. Ben’s new favorite beer batter!

You Got Peanut Butter in My Chocolate - 6% ABV - Oatmeal Stout with gobs of, you guessed it, Chocolate and Peanut Butter. Peanut Butter and Chocolate in beer? Who woulda thunk? Now, not only can you think it, you can drink it!

Upside Down Galaxy That - 7% ABV - Southern hemisphere hop assault! Galaxy galore… Totally Hazy And Turbid New England Style IPA. A little lighter to the eye and drier on the tongue. There are Stranger Things out there, but not as good. Eleven will love it when she turns 21. 7% ABV

Chelsie R.N. Coffee Berliner Weisse - 4.6% ABV - Chelsie is a server who has been around since day one. She’s always smiling and cheerful and ready to have fun! She just graduated and, is now also a nurse. So we made her favorite Boiler beer and named it after her! Mild sour Berliner with rich Coffee on top of that. Germany to Columbia, then all the way home to Nebraska!

Dean’s California Dreamin’ - 7.5% ABV - Dean the Dream’s been doin’ some dreamin’ of his own. This here’s his updated version of the classic West Coast IPA. Lower, softer bitterness with a dry and crisp flavor profile with all the hops, and then some, that you come to expect! New school, old school, east coast, west coast, east school, old coast, west school, new coast. Welcome to the future, past, and present!

Juanita Valdez - 5.6% ABV - If you think this Columbian Coffee concoction is a dark beer, you thought wrong. Roasty coffee nose followed by coffee notes woven through the subtleties of a Blonde Ale that won’t make you tired. This coffee spiked easy drinker was Lincoln home brewer Matt White inspired.

Boiler-o-Festivus - 5.8% ABV - Oktoberfest Festbier. Is there such a thing? There is now! Octo-amber in color with a higher ABV like a Festbier. Mix malt master and the Liter Stein blaster- dropping summer like a bad habit.

When I finally get to Lincoln for a game this is obviously a must-stop. Since I won’t make it this year and I can get Iowa next year I can’t think of a better place to end my tour of all 14 Big Ten Stadiums.

Jumbo Heroes (1-3):

Knowing what we know now about this team, especially the offense, I’m not sure how I would pick the previous weeks. And, I’m not sure what my prediction for the season would be. Very likely it would be different. Alas, we don’t get to make such rehashed predictions here, we have to sit in our decisions. Nevertheless I’ll continue on this train, and struggle mightily. Analyzing this team week by week is no easy task as they seemingly play differently each and every week. Until I see consistency from both the offense and defense I’m reluctant to flip on my picks and think this team has truly changed. Granted, I thought Purdue would lose to BC last week and I was wrong. However, one week does not a season make. Defenses aren’t changed and suddenly good after just one game. I’d love to pick Purdue here against a struggling Nebraska team. Despite my gut saying to pick them my brain keeps fighting back. Instead, I sit here debating with myself who will win a game that is incredibly important to both teams. To tell you the truth in circumstances like this I want to rely on what I want to happen. I’d rather pick Purdue and be wrong than pick against Purdue and have to hope that I’m wrong.

With Nebraska having one of their worst seasons ever I hope Purdue can head into Lincoln and steal a victory that I honestly didn’t think they would get at the start of the season. If the offense can continue how they’ve played these last two games and the defense can play half as well as they did against Boston College I have to believe Purdue can win. Despite my trepidation I’m choosing Purdue.

Purdue 38, Nebraska 28

Travis (2-2):

If Purdue’s offense turned a corner in the last two weeks I think we have this. Nebraska is not a good team right now. they are struggling to move the ball with any consistency and the defense can’t get stops when it needs to. Purdue, at least, is moving the ball. The defense seemed to wake up last week, too. The Boilers need to come out and make an early statement. It is rarely easy winning in Lincoln, but I think Purdue gets it done to move to 2-3.

Purdue 31, Nebraska 24

Juan (1-3):

While Nebraska has struggled this year so far, I am still cautious about this game. If it was in West Lafayette, I would say this is probably a win. But since it’s in Lincoln and our first road game of the year, it won’t come easy. This game might as well be a coin toss, so... *flips coin into the air, lands on Nebraska*. Damn it.

Purdue 28, Nebraska 31

Kyle (2-2):

Nebraska has just looked terrible in every facet of the game so far this year.

Also, Scott Frost ran his mouth.

Purdue 34 , Corntuggers 17

Holmes (2-2):

This seems like a classic “closer than should be at the end” game. One team is coming off a big win, the other a thumping loss, and we should get a better idea of what both teams really are by the end of it all. Also, I hear, even though he is still a huge Purdue fan, Jumbo Heroes likes to wear those big foam cornheads and thinks they look good (this may be too harsh and mean-spirited a joke, and I apologize to JH’s family and friends).

Purdue 34 , Nebraska 31

Drew (1-3):

Purdue’s passing game remains as hot as two rats...ahem...in a wool sock, the running game enjoys the passing game keeping the safeties back and the defense continues to improve. In his Monday press conference Scott Frost will say, “we get a game we can win next week.” He will later look at the schedule, realize he’s talking about Wisconsin and claim he was actually talking about the intrasquad scrimmage he has planned for Wednesday.

We have a #TeamMeteor game!

This is a relatively short week in the Big Ten. There are only five games and one is a non-conference one between Michigan State and Central Michigan. Maryland, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois all have the week off.

Surely Michigan State is not going to lose at home to a team that got blown out by Kansas, right? Of course, this can now apply to Rutgers. There is a small measure of danger because the Chips did play a relatively close game with Kentucky to start the season, but they barely beat Maine last week 17-5. At least they got the Fünfer. Michigan State 45, Central Michigan 10

I think Indiana will be at 6 wins before the Purdue game. They are already sitting on 3 and have Rutgers, Maryland, Minnesota, and Iowa before then. Rutgers is an atrocious team offensively and I still cannot believe we lost to them last year. Indiana 38, Rutgers 10

I want to feel confident going into this game because Purdue looked really good last week against a ranked team and Nebraska has looked pretty awful. Even in yesterday’s Q&A the Corn Nation guys were not very confident. Unfortunately, I have Purdue DNA. Nothing ever comes easy to us and that includes trying to beat the worst Nebraska team in over a half century. Throughout their history they have never lost 8 in a row and they are sitting on seven since beating us last season. If we’ve truly turned a corner we win. Purdue 31, Nebraska 24

When they won on opening night in West Lafayette I really thought Northwestern was going to be a force in the West. Now they have lost their top running back and they have not looked great in a pair of home games. Michigan has been rolling the last three weeks since the opening loss to Notre Dame.
