Brohm was determined to go deep, so he beefed up the line

I’m going to cut right to the chase in this article. If you want the preview, you can find it here:

https://www.hammerandrails.com/2018/9/18/17875558/purdue-max-protection

Down and Distance - 1st and 10 from the Purdue 38

Personnel Package- 12

Defense - 4-3-4 Base

This is Purdue’s 3rd play of the game, coming after a big 1st down reception by Hopkins, and Brohm is looking for blood. The Boilermakers hurry to the line and make no substitutions, pinning Missouri’s base defense on the field (they’re most likely going to be in base anyway, but I love the tempo).

Once again, Purdue goes with their max protection look, but this time they really mean it. Brohm keeps both tight ends in to block, essentially running a two man route with a dump off option out of the backfield.

Purdue is serious about protecting the quarterback, keeping 7 players in to block 4.

The blocking assignments look something like this.

The TEs (Herdman, Hopkins - Red) are both assigned to the Missouri DE (red). It looks like Purdue is trying to block a DE straight up with a TE, which is generally not a good idea, but Hopkins is coming across the formation looking to lay out the DE with his running start. All Herdman has to do is hold him up long enough for Hopkins to make the double team block.

The RT (McCann - Yellow) is blocking down on the 3 tech DT (yellow). He’s better at dealing with the bull rush than the speed rush, so having him block down instead of asking him to hold up on the outside against the DE makes sense. Brohm is scheming around a weakness and working towards a strength.

The RG (Edwards - Green), C (Barron - Green) and LG (Evans - Green) are all interested in the Missouri NG (Beckner - Green). Beckner is the biggest threat on the Missouri line, and Brohm isn’t going to let him be the player that gets to the quarterback.

Finally, the LT (Hermanns - Blue) is responsible for the DE (blue). It appears that Brohm is comfortable with leaving Hermanns on an island against the DE in order to help the interior of the line. Based on Missouri’s personnel, this makes sense.

Purdue once again goes with play action to freeze the linebackers, and once again, Missouri’s NG (Beckner-green) is caught looking at the fake from the RB (Horvath - Pink) instead of challenging Purdue’s interior line.

The LT (Hermanns - light blue) is doing a great job one-on-on vs the Missouri DE (light blue)

The RT (McCann - Yellow) is doing a nice job washing the defensive tackle down the line and into his help.

In a strange turn of events, Purdue’s TE on the line (Herdman - Red) stood up the Missouri DE (Red) leaving Purdue’s move TE (Hopkins -Red), who was supposed to be helping Herdman, hanging out on the end of the line instead of cleaning up the DE. This is important later on in the play.

You’ll notice that Blough is once again rolling to his right, which makes sense because the line is blocking down and pushing the Missouri line left. This is by design.

I’ve also marked the Missouri linebackers, because they come in to play shortly. The outside linebackers are in zone, and heading outside to the flats. The middle linebacker may be in zone as well, but he does a good job of recognizing that Purdue is running a 3 man route, and those 3 potential receivers are not threatening his zone. Subsequently, he is free to come on a “green dog” blitz.

This is a beautiful sight. Blough is hanging out waiting for the deep post to clear the safety. This route takes time, and as you can see, Blough isn’t worried about much right now.

The LT (Hermanns - light blue) has his man dead to rights, and Blough has rolled away from him anyway.

The LG (Evans - green) is just hanging out. He was supposed to help on the NG (Beckner - green) but as you can see, the C (Barron - green) is abusing Beckner. The RG (Edwards - Green) is helping on the DT (yellow) because he doesn’t have anything else going on.

The RT (McCann - yellow) has washed the DT (yellow) down the line and out of the play. He doesn’t need any help.

The outside is where things are starting to get a little dicey. The inline TE (Herdman - Red) still has his man, but the pressure is coming from the MLB (blue) on the move tight end (Hopkins - Blue).

As you can see, the blitzing MLB (blue) destroys the move TE (Hopkins - Blue). I’m sure Hopkins is screaming “Look Out!” right about now, and I’m also positive that his teammates will give him grief in the film room. To be fair though, the MLB had a running start and Hopkins was stationary. He lost a physics problem.

Blough is already in his throwing motion though, so it’s a race between his release and the MLB and.....

Blough wins.

He can’t step all the way into the throw, and slightly under throws what should be a touchdown, but he did a great job of standing in and letting it rip with the MLB closing fast.

I’ll never question Blough’s toughness.

Purdue helped out the O-line and was rewarded

One of the major issues Purdue had over the first 2 games was pass protection.

Northwestern and EMU spent the majority of the game chasing around the Purdue quarterback. When you can’t protect the quarterback, you can only use a small fraction of your playbook. Brohm made some adjustments in protection against Missouri and was able to open the playbook back up.

This is how he got it done

Max Protection

Brohm wanted to throw the ball deep against Missouri, but he wasn’t sure Purdue could hold up to the pass rush. His solution was to break out the max protection blocking scheme early and often, and it worked to perfection.

Play - 2nd and 10 from the Purdue 14

Personnel Package- 12

Defense - 4-3-4 Base

Missouri thinks they can get pressure on the quarterback with their 4 man rush. They’ve watched the film, and Purdue has struggled in protection.

Purdue also thinks Missouri can get pressure on the quarterback with their 4 man rush. They’ve watched the film, and Purdue has struggled in protection.

That leaves Brohm with 2 choices:

Throw quick short and intermediate routes

Help the offensive line

Brohm goes with the second option on this play,

The first device Brohm uses to slow the pass rush and help the offensive line is play action.

This still is right after the play action to the RB (Horvath, Blue). The Horvath makes the fake and continues out into the flat.

Notice the DT (Beckner, Red), because Beckner is one of the better DTs in the SEC, and the player Purdue is most worried about blocking. Beckner is interested in the play action and isn’t attacking the interior of the line. Any time you don’t have to block Beckner, you’re doing something right.

At the top of the screen I’ve circled the LT (Hermanns, Yellow). He’s the only lineman isolated on the perimeter and he stones the Missouri DE. To further help Hermanns, you see Blough rolling to his right, and away from the isolated left side of the line and towards the max protection.

Finally, at the bottom, you see Purdue’s max protection. The fake has drawn in Missouri’s DE (green), which is part of the plan. The right tackle has been Purdue’s weak spot the first two games. In order to remedy this situation, McCann (green) was moved from guard to tackle. He’s a big powerful dude, but not particularly quick. The defense is going to try and speed rush him all day. This, however, is impossible when Purdue’s TE (Herdman, Purple) blocks down on the end, allowing McCann to use his strength and preventing the speed rush.

This is a still from right before the pass

As you can see, Purdue has totally neutralized the Missouri rush. Beckner (red) is trying to peal off and go around the line, but he’s too late to make an impact. Blough has time to wait for the route, set his feet, and deliver a strike to Hopkins for the 1st down.

I love this adjustment from Brohm. He’s limiting the number of routes, but at the same time, he’s allowing the routes that are being run to work down field. Instead of throwing in the towel on the down field passing game because of poor protection, he made an adjustment, helped the line, and subsequently, freed up the passing game.

I’ll be back with more clips from this game a little later.

Another week, another competitive loss.

David Blough has earned the job

You agree here, right? After breaking the Purdue record for most passing yards in a game, you would think he has won the job. David Blough looked like Drew Brees back there Saturday, slinging the ball all over the field with great accuracy. He threw it deep, threw it short and ran it a bit also.

His record performance of 572 yards was not enough to propel the Boilers to a win, but the offense did not look stagnant as it did in times vs Northwestern and the majority of the game against EMU. The run game disappeared from the previous week, but the passing game is now alive.

Secondary still struggling

Last year, our secondary was surprisingly good. This year is another story. Consistently missing tackles and blow assignments over the past couple of weeks. Tim Cason was benched this week for Kenneth Major, which I am fine with. I am totally fine with rolling with the youth movement back there, if we are going to be terrible at defending the pass, you might as well do it with youth to let them get better.

Thieneman was never great in pass coverage, but this year he has been exposed at safety. He has still done a nice job in run support, but on passing downs, I almost prefer a player like Cory Trice coming in.

More rotation on the offensive line

The offensive line stayed fresh by rotating pieces all night, it was rare that Blough received any pressure. Mike Mendez rotated in at guard and Swingler was rotated in at Right tackle after not starting. We got 7 or 8 deep on the offensive line. If they can stay healthy, that will help down the road.

Cornel Jones is the real deal

All the buzz was around Derrick Barnes before the season. But, Cornel Jones has outplayed him to this point. The sophomore linebacker is all over the field all of the time. With Markus Bailey struggling early this year, it has been nice to see another Linebacker step up and deliver. Cornel may be a star linebacker in the making.

Catch rule needs clarification

Was it a catch? Was it not a catch? I am not here to debate that. Rather, the catch rule needs clarification. Similar to the NFL, you see catches ruled incomplete in college all the time and you also see catches that don’t appear to be catches turn into catches. So, who the heck knows what is going on with it. To be honest with you, if it was a catch or not, Mizzou probably goes down the field and scores anyway with how or defense was playing Saturday.

But, the rule needs addressed in the off-season. There were many instances of this rule being up for debate this weekend, this rule shouldn’t be deciding games.

Here is what Twitter had to say about Missouri’s win over Purdue.

This was an interesting In Tweets. People are getting contentious with other fans right now. Last night after the game we had Michigan fans even come at us for a tweet that said we would take Brohm over Harbaugh with Michigan’s level of talent because we were now 0-3. I did some firing back, mostly reminding them that Purdue has a better record than Michigan against Ohio State this century.

Of course, there was still a lot to say about our game. Here is what went down on Twitter during a record night from David Blough:

Yep. Another close loss.

This weekend I drove more than 500 miles to watch two college football games in a 12 hour span. I headed to Toledo on Friday, took in the Miami-Toledo game at noon Saturday, then headed 216 miles across U.S. 24 to make it to West Lafayette just in time for kickoff of Missouri-Purdue. It was a long day. On one end I saw a talented Miami team toy with a pretty good MAC team before laying the smack down in the fourth quarter. On the other end I saw a Purdue team that laccks talent in many areas battle and nearly pull off a second straight upset of an SEC team.

By the time I left Ross-Ade Stadium I still had a long way to go to get home to Indianapolis even though it was an hour away, just as Purdue has a long way to go despite being 0-3 by eight total points.

In just 16 days the 2018 Purdue football season has gone from “Hey, we might win nine games” to “Will we win any?”. We have lost all three games by slim margins for a variety of reasons. Jared Sparks continues to be the hard luck receiver, as he is literally two inches from having Purdue at 2-1 with last week’s barely out of bounds catch and this week’s overturned touchdown. We have made penalties, turned the ball over, missed field goals, and had a pourous defense. There are clear flaws with this team, but it keeps fighting.

Last night was a prime example of the fight in this team. At one point Purdue trailed 27-10 and Drew Lock was looking unstoppable. He finished 26 of 43 for 375 yards, 3 TDs and a pick, but the Missouri offense as a whole was practically sprinting down the field. Overall they went for it on fourth down three times and converted all three. Receivers were uncovered all over the place with Jalen Knox scoring on the longest play, a 59 yard catch.

Down 27-10 with seven minutes left in the first half, Purdue could have rolled over. Instead, they drove down for a touchdown, got a fortuitous blocked field goal, and David Blough orchestrated an excellent drive of 68 yards in 23 seconds for a score to Brycen Hopkins with 9 seconds left.

Now down 27-24, Purdue used halftime as a free defensive stop and went on a time-consuming field goal drive to tie it. I had hoped that the lengthy rest for the defense would help, but Missouri needed 1:39 to go 75 yards and retake the lead. Missouri would push it back to 10, but Purdue tied it yet again with a TD pass to Rondale Moore and a field goal after Sparks’ TD was overturned.

Of course, the overturned TD was not the only play of inches on this drive. Earlier in the drive Moore was tackled in the open field by a shoelace. He gained 42 yards on the play, but if not for barely getting tripped up it is a 90 yard TD.

Missouri had its own moments, showing these teams were pretty even. Purdue missed a 50 yard field goal, but Missouri had a long field goal blocked. Purdue had the shoelace tackle of Moore, but Missouti has a dropped sure TD on its first drive. Through 57 minutes Purdue matched Missouri with wild swings and Blough had a record breaking 572 yards through the air. On its final drive Purdue was twice inches from a go-ahead touchdown, but it would still need a defensive stop.

Unfortuantely, it likely wouldn’t have mattered. Even had Purdue led by four the Tigers were in great position to get the winning TD. Instead, they settled for the game winning field goal as Purdue just could not stop them. Larry Rountree III gashed us for 168 yards on the ground and kept ripping off big gain after big gain. He gave them the balance offensively to keep our defense guessing, while Blough simply went mad bomber and we all but abandoned the running game.

The play where I have to give Lock the most credit was the second play of the game winning drive. It was one of hte rare times Purdue got him under pressure and he was able to duck out of it, buy time, and dump off to Tyler Badie for 20 yards. That got their drive going and instead of facing third and long inside its own 25 Missouri was rolling already at midfield.

The Tigers were as good as we thought and threw up massive offensive numbers. With much of the same team as last year they scored 40 points and you feel like they left some on the field. Last season we held them to three points and they were lucky to get that. It really shows what Purdue lost defensively. Yes, Ja’Whaun Bentley was the only draft pick, but the likes of Danny Ezechukwu, Da’Wan Hunte, Josh Okonye, T.J. McCollum, Gelen Robinson, Eddy Wilson, and others were critical too.

At many positions, especially on defense, Purdue is playing inexperienced freshmen or guys that were career backups to those above for a reason. There is little question that Brohm and Nick Holt got last year’s group to overachieve, but now we’re starting to see what years of poor recruiting have done. You only need to look at our final rankings via Rivals over the last decade to see it:

63 (2008, Tiller’s Final year)

74 (2009, Hope)

The current true freshmen are better than any class save one in the last decade. The 2014 class, which is composed of our current 5th year guys, had only Blough, D.J. Knox, Kirk Barron, and Cole Herdman as regular contributors. Keiwan Jones and Tim Cason contribute defensively, but are getting passed over by younger guys. The 2015 class is similar with three starters and two specialists.

It is a simple, sad fact: The top two classes lack talent compared to most of our opponents. There have been some coaching questions to be sure (like where was that passing game vs. EMU?) but as I saw in our mentions last night, some are already turning on Brohm. The thing is, this year the defensive line (recruited by Hazell) is a glaring weakness. Brohm already has three top level commits on the defensive line that could probably start right now. He sees a weakness and is addressing it. It just sucks those guys aren’t here. Yet.

Brohm is clearly not Hazell. By the 16 game mark Hazell was 3-13 with multiple blowout losses. Brohm is 7-9 with five of those losses by 11 points total. He has at least made Purdue competitive (Hazell’s team gets blasted something like 52-10 last night) and the talent is ucoming. Next season’s recruiting class is about 2 months from signing and when it signs it will be our best in more than a decade. That will give Brohm two classes better than any his two predecessors will have, with time for a third. It is a glaring weakness, and he already has a monstrous defensive line class for next year to address it.

I think we got impatient because last season was such as surprise. Purdue overachieved, and now we’re starting to see how much it overachieved. Hazell constantly said we were “this close” to turning a corner in blowout loss after blowout loss. Now we actually are close and Brohm gives the impression that he is furious we haven’t already turned said corner.

The Eastern Michigan loss was certainly bad. I can’t explain it still. The Northwestern loss is looking worse after they lost ot Akron, but we beat ourselves. Missouri fans are worried about themselves after how hard we pushed them. Yes, we’re 0-3 by only 8 points total, but 0-3 is still 0-3.

There is no time to rest, either. Boston College is coming and they very well could be in the top 25 when they arrive Saturday. We’ve shown we can play with anyone, but also lose to anyone. It is a combination of a lack of talent, silly mistakes, the opposition making plays, and bad luck like Sparks’ two non-catches. The talk of any bowl game is likely over, but each week we need to go out and show improvement. Brohm is building something for 2019 and beyond. While I appreciate the seniors this season, there will likely soon come a time where the young guns will take over.

This coming Saturday is another chance though. It is a chance to grow and should Purdue upset Boston College it might ignite another spark before we face what looks to be a weaker Big Ten than we thought. Last night we showed we can play with a good team like BC. Now we need to get over the hump and actually beat one, because otherwise we may not win a home game all season. This has been a frustrating season so far, but we actually are close. The breakthrough will come and I trust Brohm because, with last year, he has actually produced some results unlike his predecessors.

Time to get the season back on track.

For the first time since 1941 Purdue is hosting an SEC team. The last time this happened Purdue lost to Vanderbilt 3-0 on September 27, 1941. At least next season we will have a shot at revenge.

But today we need to turn the season around. Drew Lock and Emmanuel Hall are a dynamic passing duo and Purdue has a lot to clean up as a football team. The season is very much in the balance after last week’s loss to Eastern Michigan. Our 0-2 record can easily spiral into 0-5 if we’re not careful.

Conversely, a win tonight over a good Missouri team can turn things around and we can be 4-2 going into the Ohio State game. It feels like to have any realistic shot at a bowl game we need this game or the next one. Going 0-4 int he first four home games is a major step back and ends the season early, so let’s make a statement.

Hopefully by the time this posts I am in my seat. I am doing the double today of Miami at Toledo at noon and Missouri at Purdue at 7:30pm.

We turn our eyes to a brewery in Columbia, Missouri

So maybe this new focus on Friday Drankin’ isn’t working out. For two weeks I have featured a brewery in the city of our opposition and for two weeks Purdue has lost. Ah well. I made a commitment and I am sticking to it. As a result, here is a brewery in the heart of Columbia, Missouri.

Logboat Brewing

405 Fay Street

Columbia, MO 65201

One thing I like about Logboat is that htey have a nice distribution map on where to find their products. They come as far east as St. Louis, so if I make it to a Cardinals game next summer I’ll have to see if I can find them at Total Wine.

Their tap list is extensive, too. They have a core lineup of six beers and they currently list an additional four seasonal offerings, five upcoming special releases, two barrel aged, and a double IPA in their “Delta Series”. Here are the ones I would definitely try:

Dark Matter Wheat Porter - 6.6% ABV, 25 IBU - Dark Matter is dosed up with wheat malt to give it a smooth, subtle breadiness and extra body. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavors meld like thermonuclear plasma. We enjoy drinking Dark Matter while eating brownies, cranking M. Monoceros on the stereo, and thinking about portals.

Bobber Lager - 5% ABV, 15 IBU - Bobber is an unfiltered Lager brewed with inspiration from the pale German lagers. Noble Hops provide little bitterness and lend to the crisp finish with a hint of floral notes. Best of luck with the bass fishin’.

Shiphead Ginger Wheat - 5.5% ABV, 25 IBU - Shiphead is brewed with Peruvian ginger straight out of the rainforest. Coriander and fresh lemon zest yield citrus tang. Alien Sea Sorceress, find your glow.

Cowboy Me Black Lager - 5% ABV, 16 IBU - This Schwarzbier style has piles of flavor with subtle notes of chocolate and roasted flavors and a hint of smokiness from the malt. Lager yeast cleans this Cowboy up nice

Knot Hole Marzen Lager - 6% ABV, 20 IBU - Most deem this extraordinarily delicious amber lager an Oktoberfest, but it’s regularly released as early as July or August. And there is no explanation. Enjoy the Knothole. Enjoy not being stuck inside a tree.

Alien Gold Barrel Aged Strong Ale - 8.5% ABV, 10 IBU - Alien Gold is a Belgian Style ale aged in Burgundy Oak barrels with Rainer Cherries for 1 Earth year inside the third dimension. We only brew a small batch so make sure to grab some when you see it!

I am planning a trip out to Colorado next summer and if I make the drive again this is definitely going to have to be a stop!
