Big Ten football is back! (Unlike Texas)

We’re back! The Big Ten has returned in a big way. This year we had some really good week 1 games as opposed to the usual slate of cupcakes and blowouts. Ohio State took a very early lead in the conference race. Michigan beat a good Florida team. Maryland surprised Texas. Purdue pushed Louisville hard. Overall, it was a good week.

Let’s get to the tour:

Ohio State 49, Indiana 21

It was all over when Indiana students chanted “overated”. Up 21-20, the chant started, but then Ohio State turned on the jets on the next play as Parris Campbell broke off a 74 yard TD catch. That was part of Ohio State being explosive for the rest of the game:

But then the floodgates opened towards the second half of the third quarter. The offensive line began getting a consistent push against the Hoosiers defensive line. J.K. Dobbins began using those small holes to create explosive plays. And J.T. and his receivers finally started to connect on explosive passes — even if the deep ball remained somewhat elusive. Including the Buckeyes’ final score, the offense managed touchdowns on five of their last six drives.

For Crimson Quarry, it was a disappointing ending to an evening that started strong:

While some things have changed dramatically over the past couple seasons — namely, the defense — and while Indiana did some things tonight that they rarely have in the past — such as capitalizing on an Ohio State drop, getting off the field with a 4th down stop, and taking the lead on the next possession — others are the same in perpetuity. Those things that never change that stood out tonight were an inability to maintain any momentum in a big game, special teams being a nightmare, and the students leaving early.

Minnesota 17, Buffalo 7

The Gophers sure didn’t look great in game one under P.J. Fleck, managing just a field goal in the second half:

Quarterbacks Conor Rhoda and Demry Croft. Maybe I’m being too harsh, but I wasn’t impressed with either Gopher quarterback, if I’m being honest. Rhoda had the better passing numbers and a touchdown through the air, but was also responsible for that terrible interception in the end zone before halftime. Croft appears better suited to the run-pass option offense and had the Bulls’ defense on its heels as he led a 10-play, 64-yard scoring drive, but his inexperience showed at times. I wasn’t thrilled when Fleck announced the co-starters for this game, and their performances did nothing to ease my concerns about the uncertainty at quarterback.

Washington 30, Rutgers 14

Rutgers started strong, but faded as Washington’s strength and experience allowed them to pull away after trailing early:

For the most part, there were few if any blown coverages that were ultimately the fault of the secondary. The times I noticed were linebackers in (or should having been in) coverage though some were very difficult assignments. Kiy Hester ended up chasing an open man on one play, but I think he was in a zone and was forced to pick up that man. Rutgers defense played pretty basic defense, rarely blitzing. It seemed like the safety on Pettis’s side was usually cheating toward him even in the Ash patented cover 4. Therefore the other safety was primarily responsible for the slot receiver or tight end depending on the formation. Corners were playing off the line and had the deep quarter (cover 4), occasionally jamming at the line in true man-to-man.

Wisconsin 59, Utah State 10

This was basically two games. Utah State led 10-0 late into the secnd quarter, then Wisconsin blitzed them for 59 points in roughly 32 minutes:

Redshirt sophomore Alex Hornibrook completed 15-of-23 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns, while tight end Troy Fumagalli—who wore No. 48 in honor of injured inside linebacker Jack Cichy—caught five passes for 105 yards and a touchdown on the evening. For the night, UW gained 478 yards in a balanced effort (244 passing, 234 rushing).

On the other side of the ball, Wisconsin’s defense contained Utah State’s pace-driven offense to 304 yards, with about 137 of those yards coming in mop up time in two late drives during the fourth quarter. Eighty-eight of those were gained in the first 15 minutes, and it wasn’t a pretty first quarter and a half for the Badgers.

Penn State 52, Akron 0

Akron sucks:

There is little that Penn State did not do well versus the Zips. Many reserve players got much needed experience. The offense looked crisp. The defense appears to be deeper than it has been in years. The team is ready to take on the next name on the schedule, the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Louisville 35, Purdue 28

Our friends at Card Chronicle saw that there is a lot to work on for the Cards:

Along with penalties, ball security remained a big issue with Louisville. Two fumbles inside the one-yard line ruined red zone opportunities for the Cardinals, and Jaylen Smith's fumble in the third quarter parlayed into a Purdue touchdown. Though U of L was fortunate to win the turnover battle (4-3), these are reasons why teams like Purdue build confidence and believe they can win.

Michigan 33, Florida 17

The Gators got 14 points off of pick-sixes, but little else:

While No. 17 Florida talked a lot of talk before the game, it was No. 11 Michigan who let their play talk and won the season opener in Arlington, Texas 33-17 on Saturday.

The Wolverines controlled the game for the most point, but there was a brief period in the second quarter where things seemed to be falling apart for Michigan.

Two back-to-back interceptions that were returned for touchdowns gave the Gators a 17-10 lead, and suddenly a new life on their sideline.

While Michigan’s defense did take over for the remainder of the game (not allowing a touchdown), the game got a different feel from one possession that may not be thought about as much.

Maryland 51, Texas 41

Perhaps the most impressive Big Ten team of the weekend, the Terps got a road win over the constantly overrated Longhorns:

Not until Saturday. Maryland opened its season by upsetting No. 23 Texas on the road as a 19-point underdog. The Terps scored 51 points, the most they’ve ever put up against a ranked opponent. They rushed for 165 more yards than the Longhorns. They scored 27 unanswered points in the first half to silence the crowd, and when Texas slashed the lead to three by the end of the third quarter, Maryland scored another 14 to seal the deal.

Illinois 24, Ball State 21

The Illini were hardly impressive in this one. Ball State had a late fourth quarter lead and Illinois eneded a block on their game-tying field goal attempt to preserve the win in Champaign:

You ever hear of Mike Dudek? He did some good stuff yesterday, and the redshirt junior was our Player of the Game.

Are you a visual person? There are a lot of photos from the win, but sadly nothing of freshman running back Mike Epstein. Next time, though!

Iowa 24, Wyoming 3

I thought the Cowboys would be better in this one, but hte Hawkeye defense held them to only a field goal. It is easy to win when that happens:

A.J. Epenesa played (and quite well) in his Hawkeye debut. Josh Jackson has all the makings of a star. We might even have a solid safety in Jake Gervase. Ben Niemann played arguably his best game in the Black and Gold. Brady Reiff had a damn interception.

Wyoming had just 233 yards of offense and were 5-18 on third down. Josh Allen was good, but even his arm wasn’t enough to overcome a powerful Iowa pass rush and an aggressive secondary hellbent on making the Cowboys pay.

Michigan State 35, Bowling Green 10

Another game in the B1G-MAC challenge went the way of the Big Ten, but with not as much drama as Illinois-Ball State:

Brian Lewerke: 250 yards and three touchdowns? THAT'S THE STUFF. What was more impressive is that Lewerke didn't throw himself into trouble, and his instinct in pressure situations was prime. Heck, he made himself the leading rusher with 69 yards by picking great times when to say "screw it" to the whole passing thing and just deciding to run.

Norhtwestern 31, Nevada 20

The Wildcats looked pretty bad at first, as they were trailing into the second half, but they did enough to earn the win:

The Wildcats averaged only 3.1 yards per carry despite facing a defense that gave up 300 rushing yards per game last season. They were unable to create holes for Justin Jackson for most of the game, as the senior running back had to break numerous tackles just to gain positive yardage multiple times. He was never able to truly break free for a big gain. Despite a whopping 50 total carries, no rusher ever gained more than 13 yards on a single play, and this lack of explosiveness made the Wildcats predictable for much of the game.

Nevada’s new 3-3-5 stack worked well against Northwestern’s running game, as Justin Jackson, Jeremy Larkin, and John Moten were often bottled up behind the line of scrimmage.

Nebraska 43, Arkansas State 36

The Cornhuskers almost got a surprise on their home field. They led by double digits late, but a touchdown and an onside kick recovery had Arkansas State with a chance to tie on the final play:

Arkansas State engaged onside kick mode, and it got activated with a Chris Murray recovery on the Nebraska side of the field which was confirmed on review. Hansen got it started with a completion to Mack. Hansen sent a pass over Booker’s head with :21 to go in the game. Another incompletion brought third and 10 with :15 left. that play brought Edwards on a 10 yard out to get a first down with :09 down. Antonio Reed with a hands to the face took it to the 11 yard line on the same play. Deontre Thomas almost saved the game, but Hansen threw it incomplete with :02 to go. With one last shot, Hansen sent it through the back of the end zone. Game over.

Non-Conference Opponents:

Ohio 59, Hampton 0 - The Bobcats only gave up 108 total yards against their overmatched FCS opponent.

The return of In Tweets saw Purdue push Louisville about as far as you can push a team.

In Tweets is back! I tried to follow these as much as I could from Section 639, but with an exciting game I was often too busy screaming myself hoarse as Elijah Sindelar and David Blough fight hard to bring Purdue a win. Here is what the Twittersphere had to say about this one:

Hope is a good thing.

On August 31, 2013 I drove to Cincinnati to watch Purdue take on the Bearcats. After Darrell Hazell came to Purdue with much fanfare and a party on the Circle in Indianapolis the Boilers wilted in the second half. Down 14-7 in a close game, they eventually lost 42-7. We thought it only meant that the rebuild would take a little longer than expected, but instead it was merely a sign of things to come.

Yesterday there was another party on the Circle. Once again, Purdue was starting under a new head coach with an era that was supposed to be better than the previous one. Hazell had inherited a team that had made two consecutive bowls, while Jeff Brohm had inherited a team that had done far less.

The result was night and day different, however.

As a Purdue fan for my entire life I have seen a lot. I have seen nearly every iteration and conjugation of the verb “to Purdue”. We are familiar with it. We live with it. We last saw it in an opener at Marshall two seasons ago. I am conditioned to think that once it starts to go wrong, there is nothing to stop it.

Tonight, the moment of Purdueing came with 3:18 left in the third quarter. After Louisville had driven down and scored a touchdown that was fumbled out of the end zone, yet was still a touchdown (after two other questionable at best calls, too) Purdue still led 21-19. Unfortunately, David Blough made a bad read and was intercepted by Stacy Thomas, who returned it 61 yards for a go-ahead score. Purdue then got the ball back and Blough threw a second interception for good measure.

This was it. This is where the Purdueing was going to happen. It was time for the Lamar Jackson avalanche to take over and, after fighting the good fight for nearly three quarters, the Louisville Cardinals would pull away to a three or four score lead. The Purdue fans in attendance, a small crowd as the game where nowhere near sold out, but a loud and loyal group, could be forgiven if they had given up there. Hell, I had done that plenty of time in the past.

Instead, I was burning. I was furious from the calls that had benefitted Louisville during their fortuitous TD drive that made it 21-19. I was furious that a collapse was happening again. I was fed up with taking these beatings, and all I could think of was tweeting one thing:

I got the expected responses: that we were losing. That it was slipping away. That we were Purdueing. Can you blame us? It was ingrained in our culture.

Well, I had had enough. I have no idea of directing positive energy can change things or if it all bullshit, but for once I was signing on. I was falling in line with coach Brohm even as a fan and not quitting. Not only did I say we were winning the game, I genuinely felt it.

And Purdue responded. Just 8 plays and 67 yards later Jackson Anthrop scored his second TD of the night on a pass form Elijah Sindelar. With 10:48 left Purdue had done something in football that it had not done in ages: It had taken a series of punches, but got off the mat and delivered a stunning blow. We were not going to go down easy, and with just under 11 minutes left we had a lead on the No. 16 team in the nation 28-25. The game was not only in doubt, but the Cards were actually in trouble.

Of course, Louisville is really good for a reason and Jackson is Jackson. They came down and scored on the next drive, needing only six plays. They then added a field goal to make it a 7 point lead, but Purdue wouldn’t die. Not only did it get a decent drive down the field, but even after a Sindelar interception it still forced a punt to get one last chance with a minute left. It faltered, but Purdue made Louisville earn the game down to the final play. I have no idea if coach Brohm would have gone for two and the win had Purdue scored on either of its final two chances, but I really believe he would have gone for the win because you should ALWAYS take the one chance to win with a single play if you’re the underdog.

Now… that’s where the next step comes. This is all great, but only if Purdue builds on it. That’s the thing with a moral victory: it means nothing if real victories don’t follow. There is a lot to like here. Coach Brohm took a flaming pile of crap left by Hazell and in a few months challenged a team that legitimately could play in the College Football Playoff later this year. He not only challenged them, he put the fear of God in their fans. I heard it from Louisville fans as I walked back to my car. They couldn’t believe that Purdue pushed them like that. They were scared for their own team. They thought maybe, just maybe, they weren’t as good as they hoped.

But maybe Purdue is just that much better.

There is a lot to do. We need to settle on a quarterback. We need more of a running game (51 yards on 21 carries from what was supposed to be a strength). We need to strengthen the pass defense. We need to cut down on turnovers. We’re still a very flawed team in need of talent. Winning the Big Ten, or even the Big Ten West, is a very long stretch. Even making a bowl game will take quite an effort, but there is hope. If this team builds on things here, it can pull out of the nosedive the program has been in for a while now.

As I left Lucas Oil Stadium I was encouraged. I was angry we had the three calls go against us. At the same time, I knew we had the faint glimmers of a turnaround. It is now that Coach Brohm will earn the $3 million we are paying him, because these moral victories mean nothing unless you build on them.

Finally, we have gotten a brick higher.

One of Purdue’s two QBs that threw a touchdown today. | Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

Purdue continues to lead the nation in moral victories.

Maybe it’s all about expectations. I had none going into this thing & expected nothing. But then Purdue started to make stops, two forced fumbles in the redzone, great catches by yet another Anthrop and suddenly we’ve got ourselves a ballgame. Amazingly, Purdue didn’t just fall into the trap we’ve seen them fall in before when nothing comes of a very solid first half or first quarter. We’ve seen it numerous times. Sometimes it can change from quarter to quarter with Purdue. Purdue competed.

Unsure of how to feel about this new turn of events I turned to Twitter. You know it can be a difficult place during sporting events but tonight was different. Tonight was kind of fun right? You weren’t worried about the other shoe dropping, even though it may eventually, because you were just enjoying the game.

You never know how fans are going to react when that worm turns. Are they mad? Could people on the internet possibly give a new head coach the benefit of the doubt? Or would they simply turn back into chicken littles and make things exhausting again? Complain or not? Happy or not? I just assumed the internet would be a terrible place. Kind of refreshing to be wrong and see Purdue fans unite around a team that played one hell of a game. We need this, we are hungry for this. The emotional energy has just been drained out of us, but tonight you saw how easily it could come back.

Purdue used an interesting tandem of QBs with Sindelar starting the game, and throwing a beautiful little touchdown pass to Jackson “Yet another beautiful human being” Anthrop. Unrelated note, I know there are no more Anthrop boys coming up but there’s got to be something science can do right? Right? Then Blough came in and gave Purdue the lead heading into halftime. Purdue actually led this game by as much as 21-13 but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

The third quarter was a bit of a disaster with Louisville scoring two touchdowns in quick succession, including one on a David Blough pick six. My only quibble with the game plan was the seemingly randomness of starting Sindelar but then playing Blough for the majority of the game. The offense looked good with either of them in the game. I have no preference here, no dog in the fight, I want whoever can lead Purdue to victory. Also, in the third quarter Lorenzo Neal was ejected for a targeting penalty that seemed quite iffy to me. One of Louisville’s drives included the aforementioned 15 yard penalty, a 15 yard pass interference penalty, and a “touchdown” that included Louisville fumbling the ball into the pylon and out of the endzone prior to crossing the goal line yet somehow it wasn’t called that way, but I digress.

Sure, Purdue lost, and sure moral victories suck, but here are just a few things that looked light years better today than they did last season:

The tackling was sharper.

The offense actually seemed to have a game plan.

The defense bent, but did not break on numerous occasions.

The energy from the fan base, both at the game and on twitter.

The team seemed to actually care.

The coaches seemed to actually know what was going on.

This isn’t even a full list. I was wrong about Hazell, I’ll admit it. I thought he was going to be a good hire. With Brohm I’ve held back because I’ve been shunned before. Today might have changed my mind. Purdue had no reason to be in this game today, yet there they were at the end of the game, with the ball, down just seven and driving for the game tying score. It didn’t work out in the end but wasn’t it fun to even be there? To be playing on Saturday night on a major network against a ranked team? To be in the game until the very final seconds? Didn’t all of that feel good?

Purdue wasn’t perfect today. Purdue turned the ball over four times, left far too many players open over the middle on third day, and dropped quite a few very important passes, but they did some good things too. Jackson Anthrop has the chance to be a star, the defensive line held its own against the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner, Purdue was opportunistic on defense, and changed things up on offense. It was a beautiful game to watch. I can’t wait until Friday to watch this team again. When’s the last time you could say that?

The debut of the Jeff Brohm era means a slightly different look for Purdue.

Tomorrow the Jeff Brohm era kicks off in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium and we’re all excited to see if Jeff Brohm can clean up the mess left for him. It is going to be a long, hard road back, but at least we should look good for the journey. Thanks to Katie George on Twitter we now have a look at a new helmet style Purdue will be using tomorrow from the locker for David Blough:

The action P on the helmet is different. It has a new border that showcases the gold as opposed to a previous silver border. It seems to be a different shade of black (if such a thing exists).

The uniforms themselves do not have a significant change, but this also confirms that Purdue will be in black for tomorrow’s game.

So what do you think of the new look? To my knowledge, this is the first time we have had a gold helmet without the silver border around the P. I am not sure if it is permanent, but I do like it.

Update: It looks like the change is mostly a branding issue:

Can the Boilermakers pull off an upset to start the year?

Guess who’s back? Back again? Jumbos back, tell a friend. Guess who’s back, guess who’s back, guess who’s back. DADADADADADADA

I know you’ve all missed me. Heck, I’ve missed me. Not to make this post all about me, but I am the one writing it so I can do what I want.

With Purdue football starting back up it’s time to get back to some predictions. Before we do that though let’s take a look at our records from last year. Kudos to Juan for gathering this data from last year’s posts. I’m sure it helps that he had the best record.

Juan: 11-1
Casey: 9-3
Ledman: 8-4
Jack: 8-4
Travis: 7-5
Kyle: 7-5
Drew: 6-5
Holmes: 5-7
Rob: 4-7
Purdue: 3-9

As the Brohm era starts I want to point you to The Legend’s article from earlier in the week if you haven’t read it yet. It says a lot of things I’ve been thinking about all summer. How do you measure success in Brohm’s first season at Purdue? As depressing as this sounds, you’re not going to be able to measure it in wins and losses. Through no fault of Brohm, or the players, Purdue will be vastly outmatched in most of their games this year. I say it’s no fault of the players because when you say something like this it tends to sound like you’re saying the players are crap, but that’s not at all what I’m saying.

To illustrate my point I want to use a bit of an analogy. I’m 5’6 and roughly 140 pounds. I’m not supremely athletic but I can hold my own against normal folks. The only thing I really have going for me is great endurance. If while I was in college the head football coach offered me a full scholarship to join the football team I would jump on the chance. I wouldn’t question whether the coach was making the correct decision for the team, that’s not my issue, that’s his issue.

So as we look at Purdue vs. Louisville I honestly can’t name a position or even a positional grouping where Purdue has the advantage. That’s problematic. If Purdue gets blown out tomorrow it won’t tell us much about how the rest of the season will go, but if they win it would show what is possible. Purdue is in a win-win position tomorrow, even if they don’t, ya know, actually win.

Purdue 21
Louisville 45

The Legend Says:

Purdue puts up a fight, at least on the scoreboard, to start the season. Louisville has way to many weapons for the short handed Purdue defense, but Purdue asks a few questions a Louisville defense that was exposed at the end of last year, lost some its best talent, and are breaking in a new D.C.

Purdue 21
Louisville 49

T-Mill Says:

The Jeff Brohm era begins on the big stage in Indianapolis with a national broadcast. We’re probably fodder for a blowout, but I cannot help but get excited at the half a percent chance Purdue surprises everyone with a win. We certainly have no business doing so. Louisville was light year better last season, but I believe in Brohm. He is at least saying and doing all the right things. I think I will be happy as long as it is different from Hazell’s debut and the 42-7 embarrassment in Cincinnati. If Purdue has the game in doubt in the third quarter I think most fans will be happy.

Juan Says:

I have this weird feeling...somewhere around my gut...I think it's optimism? For Purdue football? Weird.

Anyways, as confident as I feel in Brohm bringing Purdue out of the B1G basement, I don't think it will happen this weekend in Indianapolis. I think Purdue will upset an opponent this year, but I don't think it's going to be Louisville. If Lamar Jackson comes down with the plague before the game, we might have a chance. But I think he is going to do unthinkable things to the defense, possibly violate the 8th amendment, and the offense won't be able to keep up.

Casey Says:

I like Brohm a lot. I think he's going to be great. But it takes more than a game to get that Hazell stink off. This will be slaughter. 48-20' if not no biggie.

I know we’re early in this series, but the news we received yesterday that Purdue now has its own beer was too good to pass up. That means we’re revisiting the first brewery we ever profiled in this series: People’s Brewing in Lafayette.

Yes, you read that right: Purdue now has its own beer. Earlier this week People’s debuted Boiler Gold American Golden Ale and it is officially branded through Purdue University:

The beer he had at People’s brewing facilities on North Ninth Street in Lafayette. Plenty, in fact, to put in kegs to deliver 2,000 samples for the beer’s debut Friday at Indianapolis’ Monument Circle for the Circle Up Boiler Tailgate, an afternoon pep rally ahead of Saturday’s Purdue-Louisville football game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

And a run of 150 cases of Boiler Gold wasn’t due to Ross-Ade Stadium for another week, ahead of Purdue’s Sept. 8 game against Ohio. For starters, Boiler Gold will be sold only during Purdue games and in the 1869 Tap Room in the Purdue Memorial Union. Later, People’s will distribute six packs to retailers in Indiana and the Chicago area in time for the holidays.

There was one small detail: “Mitch Daniels wants some cans to show on the Circle,” Johnson said. “It’s going to happen.”

So yes, if you’re going to the Circle Up tailgate they will be available later this afternoon. This is a beer that is home grown too, according to the article:

Boiler Gold was born out of collaborations between Hoosier craft brewers – there are more than 130 in the state, according to the Indiana Brewers Guild – and Purdue’s Department of Food Sciences, which runs the Hops and Brewing Analysis Lab.

Johnson said that since People’s opened in 2009, the brewery has been tapping into Purdue expertise for everything from the feasibility of locally grown hops – generally a specialty of less humid climates in the Pacific Northwest – to marketing help from the Krannert School of Management.

Brian Farkas, head of Purdue’s food sciences, compared the relatively new Hops and Brewing Analysis Lab to the Purdue Wine and Grape Team, which has been putting university research in the hands of Indiana’s wine industry.

“That really is the benchmark for working collaboration between Purdue and the beverage industry, in this case,” Farkas said. “The wine grape program has been around 25 years or so, supporting the wine industry, offering workshops, doing analysis on soil quality on wine grapes and more. So we’re kind of modeling after that, offering support to the hops industry and the grain industry as it tries to come around, and to the craft breweries with analysis.”

It is not surprise that this is a home grown beer. Brewing has really taken off across the state of Indiana in the last five years, thus the impetus for this entire series. Indiana’s rich agricultural history even has the most basic elements of beer steeped in Purdue roots. Earlier this week David Kaminski e-mailed me about Crazy Horse Hops in Knightstown, Indiana. The CFO and COO (David’s brother) are both proud Purdue grads and they have been so successful as a start-up that everything they are producing has already been sold BEFORE it is even harvested.

So drink up, Boilers! We officially have our own beer this fall! I will definitely be on the hunt for some.
