At least we’re not Northwestern

First, the good news: Purdue did not have the worst week in the Big Ten! That was reserved for Northwestern, who only managed seven points and lost on a ricochet field goal to Brock Spack and Illinois State. Also, Rutgers was tied at halftime with Howard, so maybe both of those teams are worse than Purdue.

Nah. Justin Jackson is running for a minimum of 250 yards when Northwestern beats Purdue by 25 in November.

I am thoroughly done with Darrell Hazell barring a miracle turnaround. I have zero expectations for the rest of the season after his team looked thoroughly unprepared for Cincinnati and, in fact, was far less competitive than the FCS team the Bearcats played a week earlier. I will get more into that later today, however. For now, here is the week that was in the Big Ten.

Maryland 41, Florida International 14

Before the season started I thought Maryland was ripe for the picking on a nice road win for Purdue. Now the Terps are looking pretty good through two early games:

Perry Hills was once again spot-on, going 13-for-18 through the air for 210 yards and three touchdowns. He almost never attempted passes down the field against Howard, but he aired it out a little more against FIU. He answered FIU’s first touchdown only 84 seconds after it happened with a 45-yard bomb to D.J. Moore. Just like in Week 1, Tyrrell Pigrome relieved him, but didn’t have any highlight-reel runs this time around. Maryland’s running backs combined for 238 yards, ripping off 10 rushes of over 10 yards, compared to just four by FIU.

Cincinnati 38, Purdue 20

As expected, we’re not the only ones upset with this mess. Boiled Sports was also on hand Saturday:

I saw today as the beginning of Hazell's end. The few remaining optimists told me that Purdue needed to be 3-0 after the pre-con...I giggled at the thought in spite of the weak schedule. Wish I had their hope, I just don't anymore. A similar loss to Nevada will make it pretty clear that Purdue must begin looking at candidates, I believe...but hey, I thought both coordinators needed to be fired in November of 2014. That didn't happen, obviously.

Ohio State 48, Tulsa 3

As expected, the Buckeyes rolled at home:

We expected Ohio State to come into this one pretty comfortably on offense. Tulsa is known as much more of an offensive juggernaut, that has extreme issues on the defensive side of things. That certainly didn’t show in the first half, as it seemed Tulsa was able to have their way for the most part. The front seven was making Ohio State’s offensive line look fairly bad for one of the top teams in the nation, and the offense looked similar to the sluggishness we saw for much of the 2015 season. The pass rush of the Golden Hurricane made J.T. Barrett look very uncomfortable for much of the first half, which was a big reason for the struggles of the Ohio State offense early.

Michigan 51, Central Florida 14

Someday soon Michigan will play a real team, but for now, the Harboners in Ann Arbor are fully turgid from cupcakes:

Wilton Speight followed up his debut with an outstanding performance, going 25-of-37 for 312 yards and four touchdowns. UCF was stacking the box to stop the run (more on that later), but Michigan countered with play action passes executed perfectly by the redshirt sophomore quarterback.

Wisconsin 54, Akron 10

The Big Ten bludgeons a MAC team seeking a paycheck:

Playing their game from the opening offensive series set the pace for the Badgers’ entire first half en route to a 30-10 lead. The offense held the ball for 23 minutes, one second—compared to Akron’s six minutes, 54 seconds—and accumulated 365 total yards (159 rushing, 206 passing) in the first two quarters.

Iowa 42, Iowa State 3

¡El Assico! Was a dud, as Iowa just beat the bloody pulp out of the Cyclones:

They deserved a Hayden Fry-like beatdown. And that’s exactly what they got. Iowa thoroughly dismantled their rival and I enjoyed every single second of it. Now, with that out of the way, it’s time to look at what went right (a lot) and what went wrong (not a lot).

Nebraska 52, Wyoming 17

Another dull game where the home Big Ten team flat out rolled:

Senior quarterback Tommy Armstrong, even throwing one of the most ugliest interceptions you’ll ever see him throw, set the school’s all-time TD pass record today, passing the man he followed, Taylor Martinez. Two Huskers had 100+ yards in receiving, and the Husker offense did amass 520 yards in total offense, in comparison to only 320 to Wyoming.

Pittsburgh 42, Penn State 39

Any day that Penn State loses is a good one. When it loses to a team that “isn’t good enough to be our rival” is even better. Sorry, but this program can be burned to ashes as far as I am concerned:

After sixty minutes of highly entertaining football the teams were separated by only three points on the scoreboard. That would have been hard to believe early in the second quarter when Pittsburgh led 28-7. Each team gained over 400 yards on offense for a combined total of 838 for the day. The Lions passed for their yards, with Trace McSorely completing 68% of his throws (24-35) for 332 yards. Pittsburgh ran for 341 yards led by James Conner who finished with 117 yards on 22 attempts.

Rutgers 52, Howard 14

This was a 14-0 game at one point in favor of Howard and 14-14 at halftime. The Scarlet Knights recovered to win big, but it never should have been close:

Rutgers has developed a terrible trend after just two games and that is performing very slow out of the gate, falling behind big early. After trailing Washington 24-0 after the first quarter of game one, Rutgers fell behind by two touchdowns yesterday. Thanks to Janarion Grant’s 84 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Rutgers scored their first points in the opening frame this season. However, Rutgers has now been outscored 38-7 in first quarter action through two games. Turnovers deep in their own territory are a big part of this problem, but I’ll address Chris Laviano in a minute.

Minnesota 58, Indiana State 28

The Trees were no match in Minneapolis:

The Gophers took care of business. Minnesota racked up 50+ points and almost 600 yards of offense against Indiana State. The Gophers did exactly what a Big Ten team is supposed to do against an FCS team. Don’t take that for granted. Just look at Northwestern, who illustrated what not to do in a demoralizing 9-7 loss to Illinois State.

Illinois State 9, Northwestern 7

It is time to rub Northwestern’s nose in the metaphorical rug and then tell them to sit in the corner and think about what they’ve done:

This is a fundamental problem with the offense. If the lineman can’t run block, then Northwestern is forced to throw the ball, but if the lineman also can’t give Thorson time to throw, then the offense will look like it did on Saturday. Bad. Offensive line play has been a problem for Northwestern before, but not to the extent that’s it’s been through two games in 2016. Even with poor offensive play, Justin Jackson had been able to do enough to keep the offense moving reasonably. That wasn’t the case even against an FCS front.

Indiana 30, Ball State 20

We live in a world where Indiana is a good team, it might have a defense, and they are almost certainly going to consecutive bowl games. It is my hope that the inevitable unmerciful beating they deliver on November 26 ends Darrell Hazell once and for all:

Before the season started, one glance at IU’s schedule demonstrated that the first two games would be pivotal for setting the tone of the season. FIU and Ball State were never expected to be title contenders even within their own conferences, but each presented their own specific challenges that Indiana was able to navigate. FIU was an unusual Thursday night road opener for Indiana, whereas Ball State was an in-state opponent that had won its last three against the Hoosiers. Despite this, the Hoosiers now sit at 2-0, something not every B1G team can claim. Entering a bye week, Hoosier fans can feel good about where Indiana stands at this point, while also knowing that the team still has work to do.

North Carolina 48, Illinois 23

As expected, Illinois is not exactly a world beater in year one of Lovie Smith:

There’s no good way to sugarcoat it: Wes Lunt was pretty awful Saturday night. Normally, he’s able to compile decent statistics even in games where he hasn’t been particularly sharp. This was not the case Saturday; Lunt was 17-of-35 for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Just seven of the 17 completions were to wide receivers, and there was an array of miscues, from Lunt missing wide open targets, to the drops that Illinois fans are accustomed to seeing. He did turn the ball over with a fumble, as he dropped the ball without even being touched. Illinois really seemed to miss Mikey Dudek in this game, as no wide receivers were able to consistently get open.

Non-Conference Opponents:

Eastern Kentucky 55, Pikeville 14 – The Colonels won their own paycheck game in their home opener and they played a third string QB.

Notre Dame 39, Nevada 10 – The Wolfpack had a dumb safety and trailed 32-0 before they finally scored.

Maybe Purdue can have one of those "winning streaks" everyone is talking about.

Purdue fans have waited a very long time for a football winning streak, so maybe one will happen today. I will be manning many of the tweets with the family from the Shively Stadium Club. Kyle is somewhere in the crowd. Juan and Ledman are updating things from Ann Arbor and DC, respectively.

The staff of Hammer & Rails is cautiously optimistic, which usually means doom is coming.

Tomorrow is Darrell Hazell’s Last Stand. Purdue fans have tried to be patient here, but at 7-30 over 3+ years patience is at an end. He began his career with excitement against Cincinnati in 2013, and now, the beginning of the end may come against Cincinnati.

I say that because tomorrow is his last chance to show there is even potential for him to turn things around. Cincinnati is a decent team, but they are not even close to being a ranked team. They are a team that Purdue, if it has indeed improved, should be able to beat. You may remember that Purdue had similar games last season against Virginia Tech, Minnesota, Illinois, and Indiana.

It was absolutely boatraced in all four.

Cincinnati is probably as good, if not a little better, than those four teams, but it struggled greatly last week. It is a team with some serious flaws. It keeps turning the ball over, it has inexperienced receivers, and it was horrid against the run last season. Because of all that, it is the last chance for us to have any faith whatsoever in Hazell. If Purdue wins, he gets a slight reprieve because it shows that there has at least been some improvement. If Purdue gets blown out like it did in 2013 Hazell is basically a dead coach walking the rest of the year.

With that in mind, let’s see what the rest of the staff thinks. Everyone is 1-0 after successfully picking last week’s win. Juan was kind enough to math us a chart of how we’re doing, too.

Edit: Since the table didn't come in well, click here to view the Google sheet.

Now, onto the picks.

Jack Walker

A close game that could go either way, but Malone abandons the Shoop method and has Markell Jones and supporting cast run the rock all game long with some passes mixed in against a weak run defense. If Cincinnati had a lot of experience at receiver I'd probably predict them to win, but only one experienced receiver should help out our defensive backfield just enough. Cincy has a solid running game, but our front 7 is much improved against the run. Purdue 34, Cincinnati 31

Juan Crespo

I know Cincinnati is coming into this game limping after struggling with their game last week. After the mostly dominating win over Eastern Kentucky, it's easy to fall into the trap that is "Oh we'll beat this team because Purdue is actually looking good and we may catch the opponent at a bad time", but that plan has never worked under Hazell, especially last year. Just look at the Virginia Tech, Minnesota, and Illinois games. Purdue came into those games with a win the previous week (or at least with Minny, was coming off a close and hard fought half against a Top 5 MSU team), while the opponents looked vulnerable. Sure enough, those three teams scored 51, 41, and 48 points, respectively, against Purdue, and the games were never close. Maybe things are different with a basically new coaching staff outside of Hazell and Malone, but I'm not falling for the trap this time. If Purdue wins this game, I promise I will become more optimistic, but until then I'm keeping my hopes low until basketball season. Cincinnati 31, Purdue 17

Drew Schneider (TheLegendofShawnMcCarthy)

Purdue needs this one...desperately needs this one. It's hard to say that the second game of the season is a must win...but this one is pretty close. It's hard for me to see 6 wins if Cincy isn't one of them. I've got the Boilermakers picking up steam and winning 27-21 on the back of Markell Jones. I don't trust Cincinnati's offense, and while I don't really trust Purdue's defense either, I think Cinci throws 2 picks and Purdue capitalizes....Boiler UP. Purdue 27, Cincinnati 21

Casey Bartley

Sorry, West Lafayette. We come crashing down quickly. We're back to real football competition and that means L's. Cincinnati 48, Purdue 24

Kyle Holderfield

I come to you with great depression after writing this prediction. I want us to win and I think we can win, but I cannot buy in after beating EKU, if we do win this game, we could start 5-0. Lose this and the team could lose confidence. I hate to have us losing, but you can all understand why I don't have high hopes. Cincinnati 38, Purdue 27

Andrew Ledman (Jumboheroes)

Three years ago the Darrell Hazell era opened at Cincinnati with a terrible defeat. I was there. It was one of the worst football experiences I've ever had. The lines into the stadium were long and unorganized, the stadium walkways were so tiny and cramped you couldn't get anywhere, the concession stand lines were so long and ran out of water despite the sweltering heat, and overall it was a terrible, terrible day. Purdue got trounced in that football game despite an early near scoring drive. This whole game is still giving me terrible flashbacks. In a way that Cincinnati game was a microcosm of the entire era under Hazell.

I honestly don't know as much about Cincinnati as I should. I know they didn't overwhelm last week against UT-Martin. In fact they were down 7-6 going into halftime. Not exactly inspiring confidence if you're a Cincinnati fan. Cincinnati also has the much hyped QB Gunner Kiel who I believe has either committed to or attended a University in every major college football conference including, oddly enough, IU. Kiel didn't play last week and has been benched going back to last season. Remember, this kid was hyped as a sure fire first round NFL pick. There are still rumblings he may pop up if the starter struggles even though Kiel is technically listed as third string. That worries me because he clearly has talent and the last thing you want is a guy coming in with a chip on his shoulder. That's my main worry about this game. Otherwise Cincinnati is a bit underwhelming, but then again Purdue is as well. We saw improvement last week but will it be enough?

I think Purdue can win this football game. They haven't won back to back games under Hazell. Ever. Never. Not once. How awful is that? Three seasons and Purdue hasn't won back to back games. It makes sense when you think about the fact that Purdue has hardly won ANY games under Hazell but come on. I'm going out on a limb and say that streak ends this week. Purdue gives everyone just a little bit more hope and pulls off the upset (?) victory. Purdue 35, Cincinnati 31

Rob St. Claire

May Harambe watch over us all. Cincinnati 24, Purdue 20

Andrew Holmes

Purdue 31,Cincinnati 27

T-Mill

It is amazing what one blowout of an FCS team can do. Before the year I was convinced that Purdue was toast in this game. Now I am cautiously hopeful. I view this game as Darrell Hazell's last stand. Cincinnati was far from impressive last week. Purdue struggled in the second quarter, but still never let the game get close. If there is going to be a turnaround it starts in this very game. Purdue absolutely can win this. In fact, since they are playing at home I think they need to win it. If this were last season you could almost guarantee a home blowout loss because that happened four times to similar teams. A win at least opens a few eyes in the "Hey, maybe Purdue doesn't suck as much as we thought" category, which would be nice.

You got my faith one last time, Darrell. Don't blow it. Purdue 27, Cincinnati 24

A quick preview of this weekend’s B1G action.

Last week Northwestern and Rutgers ruined the 14-0 dream week for the Big Ten. Because of bye weeks, that was the lone shot the conference had at a perfect 14-0. Michigan State is off this week, meaning there are only 13 games. The Big Ten should have another big week as only a few of the teams will be seriously challenged.

Friday

Somehow Florida International managed to get a pair of Big Ten teams to come to Miami and face them to start the season. Last week it was Indiana, and the Golden Panthers had a slim lead before getting run off the field in the fourth quarter. That probably means that we get a competitive Friday night game since Maryland beat up a hapless Howard team and wasn’t really tested last week. The Terps should still win, but a loss is no out of the question. Maryland 31, FIU 27

Wyoming had to survive a lightning delay and three overtimes to beat Northern Illinois last week. Nebraska had an emotional home win over Fresno State. This is the type of game that good Nebraska wins at home with ease, but Wyoming’s Craig Bohl did start the Death Star that is North Dakota State by winning the first three of their now five straight FCS titles.
The Cards are only 4-51 all-time against Power 5 schools, but three of those wins have come against IU. The Hoosiers struggled offensively last week, but uncharacteristically showed a defense. They’ll probably get the offense fired up this week, but if they don’t, it will feel good to point and laugh at Bloomington again. Indiana 48, Ball State 24

If you thought Purdue fans were excited to blowout an Ohio valley team last week you should see Illinois fans. The Chicago Tribune practically sainted Lovie Smith and entrusted him with solving the city’s murder crisis.
The Darrell Hazell era began with a thud in Cincinnati. Does its turnaround begin with the same team?

Under Darrell Hazell Purdue has never won consecutive games. The last time Purdue won two games in a row was nearly four years ago, when my son was in utero, Danny Hope was coach, and we last finished a Presidential election. That’s a very long time in major college football. The only major conference team to have a longer streak without consecutive victories is Kansas. The Jayhawks last won two in a row over McNeese State and Northern Illinois to start the 2011 season. Since that 2-0 start they are a morbid 8-51 with losing streaks of 15, 11, and 10. Four of their wins have come over FCS teams in that time.

In its six previous victories under Darrell Hazell here is how Purdue has fared the next time out:

2013: Notre Dame L 24-31

2014: Central Michigan L 17-38

2014: Iowa L 10-24

2014: Michigan State L 31-45

2015: Virginia Tech 24-51

2015: Illinois L 14-48

The common factor is that all six games after a win were at home. Only once has Purdue managed to stay within a touchdown of its opponent (though Purdue had the ball, down 7, vs. Michigan State in the final 2 minutes before a pick-six gave that game its final margin). Purdue hopes to change its run of misfortune on Saturday with a game against Cincinnati that many view as absolutely critical for Darrell Hazell’s future in West Lafayette. Most people agree that Purdue can’t have a successful season without beating Cincinnati. In our preseason look at the year the staff here had a consensus that this was the turning point game. A win meant Purdue was in line to get off to a hot start, while a loss would bring about a “Here we go again” attitude.

Purdue desperately needs this game. I thought Cincinnati was a turning point game because, on paper, they looked like the toughest game among the first five. After struggling to beat FCS Tennessee-Martin last week (and Nevada’s struggles against Cal Poly) it is tempting to dream of a 3-0 start against a weak non-conference slate. We’ve been here before though. In all six Hazell victories it looked like a corner was being turned. In four of the six following games Purdue crashed back down to earth with pretty awful efforts.

Cincinnati So Far

The Bearcats opened the 2016 season with a 28-7 win over Tennessee-Martin, an FCS team that was 7-4 last season (and beat eastern Kentucky 42-35). The final score was not indicative of Cincy’s struggle, however. The Skyhawks led 7-0 after one quarter and 7-6 at halftime. Cincinnati didn’t take the lead until a touchdown at the 2:42 mark of the third quarter, and they were very lucky to not be trailing by more. Tennessee-Martin, after a 14-play 75 yard opening drive for a TD, fumbled the ball away on 3rd and goal from the Cincinnati 9 and later missed two short first half field goals. The game was still in question well into the fourth quarter, and was only truly sealed on a pick six with 2:16 left.

Cincinnati’s defense benefited from a pair of interceptions, the missed field goals, and the critical fumble in the second quarter. Both teams had three turnovers and struggled to move the football with any regularity.

This gives me reason for hope on Saturday. Cincinnati did not look good against a similar caliber of opponent to who Purdue played. While both teams won by 21 points, Purdue at least got up big early and never let EKU within 10 points after the first five minutes. Cincinnati struggled just to get in the lead by the end of the third quarter and pretty much had to wear down their FCS foe.

Who to Watch on Offense

Hayden Moore – QB – Cincinnati has NFL prospect Gunner Kiel on the roster, but he has been all over the place both literally and figuratively. The former five-star can’t miss QB from Columbus East (and one-time teammate of Markell Jones) once committed to Indiana and LSU before eventually going to Notre Dame. He sat a year, then transferred to Cincinnati. He played well for a year and a half, but a vicious concussion last season limited his time, and now he is all the way down at third string behind Moore, who won the job in camp.

Moore was decent in the opener, going 21 of 34 for 260 yards and two scores against an interception. He also ran 5 times for 13 yards. Moore, like our own David Blough, is only a sophomore. Last season he threw for 1,885 yards and 9 TDs against 11 INTs. He was also sacked 17 times.

Tion Greene – RB – In a split backfield last week between Greene and Mike Boone Greene had 16 carries for 97 yards while Boone had 12 carries for 35 yards and a TD. Both will play quite a bit. Both players were over 700 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns last season.

Devin Gray – WR – Cincinnati lost virtually all of its experienced receivers from last season, allowing Gray to shine in his first career action. He finished Thursday night with 7 catches for 111 yards.

Nate Cole – WR – Cole had 6 catches for 64 yards and a touchdown last week, which was pretty much a third of his production from last year. Neither Cole nor Gray is a big, tall receiver that has that as an edge over our corners, but both will challenge Purdue on the outside.

Who to Watch on Defense

Eric Wilson – LB – Wilson had a huge game against Tennessee-Martin. He finished the night with 15 tackles, 2 sacks, a pass breakup, and a pass defensed. The senior was a Second Team all-conference selection last season and had 103 tackles overall.

Tyrell Gilbert – S – Gilbert clinched the game with a 58-yard pick-six in the final minutes. He was also active elsewhere with 9 tackles and two passes defensed.

Zach Edwards – S – Edwards also had double-digit tackles last week with 12. He is also a senior in the defensive backfield and was an all-Conference honorable mention last year.

Who to Watch on Special Teams

Andrew Gantz – K – Gantz missed last week with a hamstring injury and it showed for Cincy. The Bearcats missed a field goal and an extra point without him. Gantz has made 13 field goals each of the last two years and was Second team all-Conference in 2015.

Overall Outlook

The biggest thing that will decide this is turnovers. Purdue got four of them against Eastern Kentucky while only giving up one. Cincinnati had three last week and was one of the worst teams in America last year at holding on to the ball with 22 interceptions and 11 lost fumbles. They were a -19 on the season in the turnover department, which is remarkable for a team that still finished with a winning record. Both Moore and Kiel played extensively at quarterback and each threw 11 interceptions.

Does that continue on Saturday? Purdue definitely benefited from two horrible passes and a dropped handoff for three of the turnovers, but Josh Hayes showed great initiative by winning a battle in the air for his interception. Purdue is going to have to win those battles on the corner. Cincinnati has a balanced offense, but this game will be decided with green receivers against Purdue’s inexperienced secondary. If Purdue can win the turnover battle and the secondary can hole up, we might have one of those “winning streaks” that are all the rage.

It’s Harambe Appreciation Week as Purdue takes on Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Bearcats are coming to West Lafayette for the first time in program history this weekend to wrap up a home-and-home series that began in 2013. Yes, we still remember going into that Cincinnati game in 2013 with so much hope thinking that Hazell would turn things around, but it was a sign of things to come.

Hopefully, THIS game against Cincinnati will be a *good* sign of things to come for Purdue. Win this game, and Purdue could finish the non-con 3-0, and maybe start 5-0 depending on how Maryland and Illinois adjust to their new coaching staffs (so far, so good). Lose it badly and the negative train will come rolling down the banks of the Wabash.

Anyways, let’s hope Purdue wins this game. And I assume we’ll see plenty of Harambe costumes, signs, and memes this week and at Breakfast Club given that it is Cincinnati. RIP Harambe.
