Rounding up the opening weekend in the B1G

A week of football has passed and Purdue is not the embarrassment of the Big Ten. That honor belongs to Northwestern, who lost at home to Western Michigan and 2017 Purdue coach P.J. Fleck. Our B1G brethren went a convincing 12-2 in week 1, and for once Purdue was not the embarrassment.

Let’s enjoy that for what it is.

Anyway, here is this week’s Whistlestop Tour, as we take a look around the league through the eyes of our blogging brethren.

Thursday

Indiana 34, Florida International 13

I expected a lot more from this game given last year’s close one in Bloomington, but as it turns out, Florida International is not good at football. FIU led 13-12 going into the fourth quarter, but Indiana parlayed a pair of defensive touchdowns into the win and outscored the Golden Panthers 22-0 in the final 15 minutes:

It's still too hard to tell if Indiana's defense is truly improved -- and we might not find that out for weeks. Ball State is, well, Ball State -- and will feature a decent MAC offense. Wake Forest scored 7 points tonight on Tulane. No one expects Michigan State's offense to be world-beating in 2016 -- and Ohio State's could do that to anyone and everyone. But the early sample size of only allowing 13 points to FIU? That's a helluva a start -- and a point total that anyone would've been happy with in any game last fall.

Minnesota 30, Oregon State 23

The Gophers had a bit of a fight on Thursday, but they were able to pull it out late thanks to their defense. The Beavers led 23-17 in the fourth quarter, but two TDs meant a victory for Minnesota:

Offensively it was not an efficient or dominating performance but the Gophers fared well on the ground. Rodney Smith rushed for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns while Mitch Leidner mastered the zone-read and occasionally caught the Beavers off-guard gaining 76 rushing yards with 2 scores of his own.

Friday

Michigan State 28, Furman 13

It was your typical Friday night opener for Michigan State. They slept walked against a lesser opponent in a Milton Berle game (they only pulled out enough to win):

Don’t let it be misunderstood, Michigan State was never really going to lose this game. While Furman did hang around much longer than they should have, I was never sounding the upset alert. The real disappointment of this game was that while it started out looking like we would put up 40+, the Spartans limped across the finish line. Let’s dive into the highs and lows of this victory in East Lansing.

Saturday

Purdue 45, Eastern Kentucky 24

Purdue managed to score more points than the other team. Even Boiled Sports will take that:

The defense is where things were worrisome. Purdue allowed 176 yards on the ground (off *47* attempts, but still). And though 20/37 for 222 passing yards looks good, the individual coverage gaps looked alarming at times The secondary looked much better against EKU’s worse quarterback (Maty Mauk, the starter), but looked hapless in several 3rd down situations against the better Bennie Coney.

Wisconsin 16, LSU 14

Suck it long and suck it hard, SEC. It’s about time you played a game in B1G country (and no, Indiana losing to Missouri at home a few years ago doesn’t count because Indiana is barely B1G and Missouri isn’t SEC.

This wasn’t the equivalent of a soccer team taking on a defensive posture and hoping to sneak a goal or force penalty kicks at the end. This was an overlooked, talented team taking the fight to a top-five opponent from the supposed Holy Conference of college football, the SEC, and emerging victorious.

Ohio State 77, Bowling Green 10

Bowling Green led this game 7-0, then Ohio State woke up:

Ohio State lost the farm to the NFL draft, so there were newbies all over field on Saturday. K.J. Hill and Demario McCall scored touchdowns on their first and second touches, respectively. Mike Weber tallied his first carry. Joe Burrow took his first snaps as backup QB. A.J. Alexander, Johnnie Dixon, and Terry McLaurin notched their first catches. Kicker Tyler Durbin scored his first points. Damon Arnette, Jerome Baker, Rashod Berry, Nick Bosa, Jashon Cornell, Jordan Fuller, Eric Glover-Williams, Davon Hamilton, Malik Harrison, Justin Hilliard, Keandre Jones, and Robert Landers registered their first tackles, with many more seeing the field for the first time.

Michigan 63, Hawaii 3

The saddest of sad field goals is when you realize Hawaii flew 10,000 miles from its last game to kick a 55-yard field goal while down 56-0:

Hawaii ended the shutout on a 55-yard field goal from Rigoberto Sanchez to make the score 56-3 with 12:30 to play in fourth quarter. Karan Higdon added a five-yard touchdown rush to put Michigan up 63-3.

Washington 48, Rutgers 13

Oh Rutgers:

On Saturday, Rutgers was blown out of the water by a much better team in Washington. The game was never really close, as Washington jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. Rutgers literally could not keep up with the Washington receivers, giving up 3 touchdown passes on simple streak routes. On offense, they could not get a rhythm going with all the disruption caused by Washington’s defensive line.

Iowa 45, Miami (OH) 21

Our Most Hated Rival had a pretty easy season opening win over the Red Hawks, who put up a bit of a fight, but lost this B1G-MAC Challenge game:

The two-headed monster of Akrum Wadley and LeShun Daniels took care of business. As expected, the offensive line imposed their will on an overmatched front 7 from Miami and pushed Wadley and Daniels to 22 attempts, 204 yards, and 4 touchdowns. Not a lot to report here, other than in watching the Iowa State game, they really struggled to stop the UNI rushing attack. Granted, UNI is a spread rushing attack instead of power-style. Regardless, Iowa should have a solid advantage here next week.

Western Michigan 22, Northwestern 21

A WMU TD with 2 minutes left gave the Broncos a Big Ten pelt for the Mac, as that happens every year. Now Northwestern is in some surprising trouble early on:

The defense would continue to let the team down, as it gave up a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive right after Northwestern took a 21-16 lead and finally couldn’t get a stop after the bizarre Clayton Thorson fumble to give the offense a half-chance in the waning seconds. These were the types of shutdown situations in which the 2015 defense thrived, but the Wildcats cracked on Saturday. And it started up front.

Penn State 33, Kent State 13

The Nittany Lions had a rather pedestrian win over Darrell Hazell’s old crew:

Prior to the start of the game most Penn State fans would have been ecstatic with a twenty point victory versus Kent State. That was roughly the point spread heading into the game. Trace McSorely threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 47 additional yards. Chris Godwin caught 7 passes for 67 yards. Saquon Barkley rushed for 105 yards on 22 carries. Mike Gesicki, a player that the coaching staff is looking to for a breakout season, grabbed three passes for a total of 49 yards and a touchdown. DaeSean Hamilton added a touchdown reception.

Illinois 52, Murray State 3

The Chicago Tribune was practically turgid over this win for the Illini, but they beat a crappy FCS team like most Illinois teams do:

The first game of the Lovie Smith era is in the books, and it's a 52-3 rout of the Murray State Racers. The Fighting Illini defense held tough and Wes Lunt was efficient in limited action as the biggest crowd for a home opener in Champaign left quite satisfied today.

Maryland 52, Howard 13

Howard fell badly in week 1 of their B1G Newbie Doubleheader, as they go to Rutgers this coming week:

On Saturday, Durkin had to adjust to his new role. When he was a defensive coordinator, Durkin couldn’t afford to watch much of the offense during the game. He’d be with his defense, making adjustments and preparing for the next drive. Now, Andy Buh is doing that while Durkin oversees the entire team.

Nebraska 43, Fresno State 10

By far the best moment of the evening was Nebraska honoring Sam Foltz, the punter who was killed in a car accident this offseason:

Purdue scored more points than the opposition. That is a much more rare event, as it happened for only the 7th time in the last 37 games.

Let’s take away all the negatives from the Hazell era for a moment. Let’s take away the vitriol of Morgan Burke’s legacy in the lowest attendance for a home opener since the Eisenhower administration. The object of the day was to enjoy a perfect late summer afternoon, watch some football, and see a Purdue victory.

Mission accomplished.

The alternative to the day was the unthinkable. A loss to an FCS team is just about the only way Purdue could get any lower. If a power 5 conference team loses to an FCS team they become a national laughingstock. Virginia certainly does not feel good today after losing by 17 at home to FCS Richmond. As I write this Iowa State is losing at home to Northern Iowa and Eastern Washington is up on Washington State. All FCS games for Power five schools are paycheck games designed to be glorified scrimmages. After less than five minutes on Saturday, that is mostly what this one turned into.

The first drive was a thing of beauty. Purdue practically walked down the field, mixing the run and the pass including a great designed running back dump off to Tario Fuller. Markell Jones finished the drive, then Leroy Clark picked off Maty Mauk to get the Boilers back in business again. David Blough would cap this drive with a short run and before the 10-minute mark of the first quarter Purdue was ahead 14-0.

Let’s not get picky here. Purdue had not even led a football game against anyone since the Nebraska game last Halloween. The Boilers went 0-for-November last year without even holding a lead for a single second in four straight games. A double-digit lead, one that Purdue would hold throughout, is a big deal against anyone.

Gelen Robinson’s Piesman Trophy audition made it 21-0 and it looked like a blowout was in order with a little over three minutes left in the first. That’s when things got a little dicey. Purdue only got a 35-yard TD pass from Blough to DeAngelo Yancey and the defense really struggled int he second quarter. After taking the 21-0 lead Eastern Kentucky scored 18 points in 16 minutes, making it look like we would have a game. The Colonels racked up over 280 yards of offense and a gassed defense was forced back onto the field against hot EKU team just before halftime.

The old demons were there. Purdue led 28-18, but EKU had the ball and you could just see them marching down the field, scoring to make it 28-25, then taking the second half kickoff and scoring again to take the lead.

What happened next was unexpected. EKU did pretty much nothing for seven straight drives. It was a shocking development for many reasons. First, they had been marching up and down the field at will. Second, Purdue always struggles defensively in the third quarter. Third, it appeared that the Purdue coaching staff made some actual, factual halftime adjustments. After cutting the lead to 10 EKU had drives of the following yardage: -9, 20, 5, 9, 9, 5, 0 (interception).

Yes, I know it was Eastern Kentucky, but remember how an atrocious rushing team in Illinois ran all over us last season. This is a positive step even against the competition. The Colonels did nothing until very late in the game when Purdue’s second string was in and the contest was already decided.

So aside from the second quarter we really couldn’t ask for much more. The Colonels never got closer than 10 points after the opening five minutes and we even got to see some new guys play a bit. Elijah Sindelar completed his first career pass. Josh Hayes had a really nice interception. Brian Lankford-Johnson showed why it was worth burning his redshirt when he found a small hole and took off for a 48 yards TD. Purdue barely gave up 100 yards in the second half, and the vast majority came on a late drive against the second string.

All-in-all, it was a good day. Purdue got the win, but more importantly, it got a comfortable win with very little drama. You can’t ask for too much more.

Now the Boilers have a week to prepare for a Cincinnati game that most fans of the program agree is a critical one not only for this season’s success, but for the future of Darrell Hazell. What Purdue does next week will be very, very telling.

Our Boilers won a game! Let us celebrate, but let’s pump the brakes at the same time.

Okay, whew, so we won. We are officially never going to lose against an FCS school, as we can never play one again (suck it IU). 45-24, not too shabby, but it wasn’t pretty either. I am here to grade the offense, defense and special teams for your reading pleasure. As Juan said, “You are a teacher so I assume you can do it well”, grading that is. Welp, hate it or love it, here I go.

Offense - B

I mean, we jumped out to a 21-0 lead, with a touchdown from the defense. I really liked the spread offense that Malone is using, it really gives Markell Jones running lanes (24 carries, 145 yards 1 TD). What worries me is, does David Blough have the arm to throw it all over the field? He ended the game 25-43 for 245 1 TD and 1 INT, he does a nice job throwing to the middle of the field but to the sidelines... well it is a little shaky. 2nd and 3rd quarter did not go very well, but with a strong 1st and 4th quarter we managed to score a plethora of points. As long as Markell nears 30 touches every single game we will compete. But, Domo Young has a case of the drops that needs fixed & I personally want the tight end involved more. The offensive line did their job, other than not firing out on an FCS school on 4th and 1. Barron is a beast.

Defense - B-

Ehhh, uhhh, I mean they were average. The pick 6 by Gelen Robinson was huge. We forced 4 turnovers, which is big time, but our defense sometimes looked like swiss cheese in the first half. At halftime, we had allowed 300 yards already. Let me reiterate, 300 yards to EKU, at halftime. Good news is, we have a defensive coordinator(s) this year. Ross Els and Marcus Freeman made some adjustments at halftime and only allowed 98 yards in the 2nd half and only 6 points. The Defensive Line was underwhelming in the first half, but played well after the break. Bentley and Danny E lead the team with 9 tackles a piece, and we kept Mauk and Coney in check. But the first half issues still bother me. Especially with Cincinnati on the horizon, as they have the potential to put up a lot of yards.

Special Teams - A-

When is the last time our Kicker made all of the PATS? Dellinger was solid and I think hos 44 yard attempt might have gotten tipped. He drilled a 30 yarder, which gives me some confidence in the kicking game for the first time in years. Schopper was greta, pinning EKU inside the 5 twice. Malik Kimbrough will be fun to watch on Kick Off Return, but on Punt Return he was shaky. The Kick Off coverage was solid as well.

Coaching - B+

The adjustments the defense made at halftime were a welcome site, as with Hudson the previous years we saw little to none with adjustments mid game. Hazell seemed to have the team prepared, and we did what we should do to FCS schools. Overall, Malone and Els/Freeman were solid, Hazell worked the clock well and we came out on top.

Next week we play Cincinnati, they are 1-0 and beat University Tennessee Martin 28-7. Kick off next week is at noon at Ross Ade Stadium once again, keep the train rolling!

Despite some issues in the second quarter Purdue walked away from Ross-Ade Stadium today with a 45-24 victory over the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky. After going up 21-0 on the heels of some turnovers by EKU, including the 78 yard touchdown rumble from Gelen Robinson, Purdue allowed EKU to come back and get back within 28-18 at halftime.

EKU found the weakness in the Purdue defense as the cornerbacks were consistently pounded by Coney and his taller wide receivers. For whatever reason after halftime EKU decided against passing the ball as frequently which allowed Purdue and the new Ross Els helmed defense to dig in and hold EKU to just 6 points in the second half.

On the offensive side of the ball Markell Jones had himself another great ball game and was the MVP as we all expected he would be. Jones carried the ball 24 times for 145 yards and 1 touchdown. He would’ve gotten more but David Blough was the TD vulture grabbing two one yarders for himself. The running game was what excited me the most on the offense side with not just Jones but also Richie Worship and Brian Lankford-Johnson both showing a different style of play allowing Purdue to be a bit more versatile.

David Blough finished the game 25-43 for 245 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. You also need to include the aforementioned rushing touchdowns when you consider his total. The INT also wasn’t a terrible throw. Overall, a pretty good day for Blough.

Purdue finished the game committing just two penalties which was a huge improvement from previous years under Hazell. Purdue still has problems to work on but anytime you can walk away with a victory you’ve gotta be happy. Much more to come.

Football* is back in West Lafayette! (*-by certain definitions of football).

We've got actual, factual football today in West Lafayette! we have three of our staff (T-Mill, Casey, and Kyle) embedded at Ross-Ade throughout the crowd. T-Mill is even in the swank Shively Stadium Club on his parents' seats, so someone might call him sir (without adding, "you're making a scene.").

Actually, he is more likely to be told he is making a scene.

Welcome back to Purdue football. I don't even know where to begin. There's been so much going on in my life that I honestly don't know as much about the team this year as I have in years past. Regardless of that I'm still incredibly excited for football to return. No matter what you read on here or hear me say on the podcast I am in fact an optimist at heart. I do believe that Purdue could surprise people this year. As I said on the podcast, which you should all listen to on your commute/run/whatever else you do Purdue should and will win this football game. There's never any excuse for Purdue to lose to an FCS (or whatever they call themselves now that the BCS is dead) team. I know that Purdue is not a powerhouse. I'm not naive. I know that Purdue back in 1997-2004 is not the Purdue team we will see tomorrow but I still believe that there is talent on this team. I believe that talent will see its way through this game with ease. Perhaps I'm deluding myself but the "loss" of Shoop will be a boon to this offense and they should look much better than in years past. Purdue wins and they win going away giving all of us just enough (false?) hope to get us through to next week. Will it be enough to put butts in the seats throughout the season? That will be much harder to know. The Bobinski era gets off to a 1-0 start but if I've learned anything from this past week of recriminations about Morgan Burke it's that every victory is credited to the coach and every loss is credited to the AD.

Purdue 49, EKU 10

T-Mill

Obviously, a loss would be disastrous. It put the 0-12 nightmare as a possibility if not a likelihood. A close win shows that Purdue is probably as good as outsiders think (re: not very). If Purdue wins in a blowout it will be a mild surprise and at least turn a few heads. With EKU yet to select a quarterback and under a new coach we have no idea what to expect. I will go with cautiously optimistic. For one Saturday at least, Purdue fans will be happy with a comfortable win, but not a complete blowout. Purdue 34, Eastern Kentucky 17

College football kicks off this season! (Outside of last week's game between Hawaii and California.)

It's finally here! The 2016 College Football season finally kicks off!...Well, it *technically* started last week with Cal and Hawaii playing each other in a good game in Australia, but this week we get to see everyone else play.

The format for this year's schedule doesn't look as nice as last year's, but it will still do the job. Just like last year, I will place Big Ten and Purdue's OOC opponents (E. Kentucky, Cincy, Nevada) at the top of the schedule, with the complete schedule below it. I think the people who read these posts liked this last year, so I'll keep doing that for the time being. Have a great college football weekend!
