Purdue will play Arizona State in MSG for Jimmy V Classic

Purdue will play in New York City's historic arena as part of an annual double-header.

Purdue has been invited to play in the annual Jimmy V Classic, where they will face Arizona State out of the Pac-12. Duke and Florida will play in the other half of the double header (note: This is not a tournament, just one game for each team). Arizona State finished in 11th place in the Pac-12 with a 15-17 record and 5-13 in conference play.

Madison Square Garden, unfortunately, has not been kind to Purdue and Matt Painter in recent years. Purdue currently has a 3 game losing streak in MSG, as they lost to Villanova and Oregon State in the 2012 2K Sports Classic, and Oklahoma in 2008 NIT Tip-Off. Purdue's last win in MSG came on November 28th, 2008, as they defeated Boston College 71-64 in the NIT Season Tip-Off Semi-Finals.

With this announcement, Purdue will play at least 4 games against power conference teams in their out-of-conference schedule. They will face two opponents from the ACC: Notre Dame in the Crossroads Classic and another team in the B1G/ACC Challenge. In addition, Purdue will face Auburn and/or Texas Tech (or Utah State) in the Cancun Challenge.

There is also a chance Purdue could play in the Gavitt Games, which would add a Big East opponent to Purdue's OOC schedule. Purdue traditionally schedules a 2-year home-and-home series with another power conference opponent (like they've had in the past with Vanderbilt West Virginia (twice), Alabama, etc.). If all of that occurs, Purdue will have 6-7 power conference teams in their 2016-17 OOC schedule.
