Purdue Basketball Ranked #23 in Pre-Season AP Poll

What a great time to be alive!

I want to throw out this disclaimer before we move forward with this article. I hate pre-season rankings. Pre-season rankings are worthless. They aren't worth the internet space they take up.

That being said it's always nice when your team makes it into them because it gives you an idea of the expectations placed on them. Very rarely does a team win the NCAA Tournament that isn't getting at least some sort of buzz. Does this mean since Purdue is ranked 23rd that they've basically guaranteed themselves a spot in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and the chance to go even further? Not even close. For all we know Purdue could see a rash of injuries, probably ACL tears, and not even make the tournament. North Carolina is number one in this whole thing but that gives them absolutely nothing as far as the season ahead is concerned.

I like to think of pre-season rankings as sort of the things people hear about you. It's not really important at all because most of it is garbage based on rumblings, bits of info, and half-truths, but at the end of the day it can give you an idea of what type of person you are seen as to the outside world. Right now Purdue is seen as a fringe top 25 team and I don't think it's that far from the truth. Purdue has great potential but right now it's just that, potential. Until they go out and beat some teams they don't deserve anything to be given to them.

Some quick things that stand out that I want to point out about this top 25. How in the world is IU ranked #15? Do you really think they are eight spots higher than Purdue? Didn't Purdue absolutely clean their clocks last year? Didn't they also lose in the first round just like Purdue? Did IU suddenly learn how to play defense in the offseason? Is Tom Crean still their coach? Unless one of those things changed and I'm not aware I'd expect IU fans to be in for a bitter pill of disappointment come end of season. Second, the B1G leads the nation with six teams ranked in the top 25. This should tell you that even though Purdue has great potential this season the conference slate is going to be a rough one.
