Big Ten Basketball Power Rankings: Week 8

1) Purdue (-)
W vs Jacksonville, W vs Eastern Kentucky
No doubt, Purdue is number 1. They will have to protect their crown every day from here out, though. First swing goes to Maryland in the Xfinity Center.

2) Wisconsin (+1)
W vs Chicago St
Consistency, thy name is Wisconsin. One of maybe four teams that have a legit shot at the Big Ten title this year.

3) Ohio State (+4)
W vs New Orleans, W vs West Virginia (N)
Ohio State is really rounding into form. After holding New Orleans to 36 points, they turned around and beat West Virginia on a neutral court. Kinda glad that Purdue only plays them once this year, albeit on the road.

4) Nebraska (-)
W vs North Dakota, W vs South Carolina State
I keep getting shocked when Nebraska has undefeated weeks. I was one to call for Fred Hoiberg’s head, but he has this program trending up.

5) Michigan State (+1)
W vs Stony Brook, W vs Indiana State
Absolutely insane for some to think that Magic Johnson was at MSU against Bird 45 years ago.

6) Indiana (-1)
W vs Morehead State, W vs North Alabama, W vs Kennesaw State
Close wins vs Morehead State and Kennesaw State are really testing the hearts of the fans. At least they turn out to be wins.

7) Illinois (-6)
W vs Missouri, W vs Fairly Dickinson
This drop reflects the loss of talent that is Terrance Shannon. Nothing more.

8) Northwestern (-)
W vs Arizona State (N), W vs Jackson State
Northwestern has a fantastic win and a terrible loss. They are about average in the Big Ten right now.

9) Maryland (+2)
W vs Nicholls, W at UCLA, W vs Coppin State
The ship seems to have righted for the Terrapins. They can really kickstart the year with a win against Purdue.

10) Iowa (+2)
W vs UMBC, W vs Northern Illinois
Iowa put up 103 points in bac-to-back games, but the offense was never the issue. Still, 2 20-point victories is always nice.

11) Rutgers (-1)
L at Mississippi State, W vs Stonehill
Rutgers owns one of just three Big Ten team losses in the last few weeks. That means they drop a bit.

12) Minnesota (+1)
W vs Ball State, W vs Maine
No shame in beating two lesser opponents. It should be an interesting matchup when the Gophers travel to Ann Arbor. Will the student section still be hungover from watching the Rose Bowl?

13) Michigan (-4)
L vs Florida (N), L vs McNeese
Remove the name McNeese and Michigan has two top-50 losses in a row, one of which went to double overtime. Still, Michigan has a losing record overall.

14) Penn State (-)
W vs Le Moyne, W vs Rider
As I said before, winning is not a bad thing. Unfortunately, Penn State is still in the cellar of the Big Ten.
