Real Season Results, Fake Bracket

This is more of a logic puzzle than a constructive argument for ranking teams. But for this past season with multiple teams rotating out of the #1 position and everybody beating anybody, it provided a good opportunity for revisiting actual game results between tournament teams and putting them in a tournament bracket. Just something to help me decompress from the disappointing end of the season, while I watch other programs progress in the tournament.

The challenge is pretty simple:

- only use games for the past season between teams who were both in the field of 68

- follow normal single elimination bracket rules

Otherwise you can arrange the contests in whatever order lets you fill in the most bracket positions.

Some teams played quite a few other tournament teams in the regular season; Purdue, Alabama and Arizona played 9 each. Others, like FAU ironically, played 0. So you’ll get to a point where there’s no more possibilities to fill in (I showed these with a bye placeholder).

Starting with my favorite team and working backwards, I placed 55 of the 68 teams before I got stuck:
