Purdue took down then #1 Arizona on Saturday for the Indy Classic and Fletcher Loyer was a big reason why. The Sophomore guard was on fire going for 27 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists earning him Big Ten Player of the Week.
Loyer took off in the first half and for the beginning of the second to push Purdue’s lead to 15 at one point. Arizona’s zone tripped us up as they brought it back to within four but the Boilers were able to hold off the top team, adding to their impressive resume.
Much has been said about Loyer being a liability on defense but he seemed locked in Saturday jumping the lane, grabbing 4 steals and disrupting the experienced Arizona guards.
This is only the second time Loyer has earned the award, the first coming back in January of last season when he dropped 27 points against Nebraska.
Loyer’s shooting can be inconsistent at times but he has the ability to take over the game when he gets going. When the duo of him and Smith play like they did Saturday, there isn’t a team who can beat them. Much deserved recognition for Fletcher as he will be a big part of Purdue having success in March.
