Big Ten Basketball Power Rankings: Week 5

1) Purdue (+1)
W vs Alabama (N)
Purdue is back on track after a hard-fought win over Alabama in Zach Edey’s return home. Edey plus a turnover-limited Braden Smith is one of the deadliest combinations in college basketball. Purdue will get another crack at the #1 ranking if it can take down Arizona in Indy Saturday.

2) Illinois (-1)
L at #17 Tennessee
Illinois was on a pretty nice roll, taking down Rutgers at the RAC Jersey Mikes Arena and beating FAU at MSG, but the roll slowed when they ran into Tennessee in Knoxville. Not a bad loss by any means and Illinois looks like a top-3 B1G team.

3) Northwestern (-)
W vs Detroit Mercy
Nothing is really learned when you pick on the little teams. Just pray for no injuries.

4) Wisconsin (-)
L at #1 Arizona
Can’t shame the Badgers too much for getting spanked in Arizona’s house.

5) Indiana (-)
L vs Auburn (N)
Did IU get torched by Auburn in Atlanta? Yes, but the Hoosiers are a better team than those below them.

6) Nebraska (-)
L at Minnesota, W vs Michigan State
The loss to Minnesota was not great for the Huskers. Add in the fact that MSU is really struggling right now and Nebraska stays put.

7) Ohio State (+1)
W vs Miami OH, L at Penn State
Beating a MAC team and losing in Happy Valley isn’t very inspiring.

8) Michigan (+3)
W at Iowa
There always seems to be problems when Michigan travels to the western B1G teams. The Wolverines got a win, but their head coach could be in hot water... again.

9) Rutgers (+1)
L at Wake Forest, W at Seton Hall
Not quite sure what to make of this Rutgers team after they lost at Wake Forest before winning against Seton Hall. Just seems like a middle-of-the-pack year for the Scarlet Knights.

10) Maryland (+2)
W vs Penn State
Beating Penn State at home isn’t the world’s best win. But Maryland beat the team in front of them and you can’t fault them for it.

11) Minnesota (+2)
W vs Nebraska, W vs Florida Gulf Coast
A 2-0 week for the Gophers is always welcome. Throw in a conference win and Ben Johnson and co should be experiencing holiday cheer.

12) Penn State (+2)
L at Maryland, W vs Ohio State
Winning at Maryland is not easy so it’s not the end of the world. A solid win over Ohio State at home (and the disarray of some others) gets Penn State out of the cellar.

13) Michigan State (-4)
L at Nebraska
It does not matter than Tom Izzo teams always seem to turn it around. The Spartans are very underwhelming and a home game against Baylor may not be a pleasant holiday treat for MSU.

14) Iowa (-6)
L at Iowa State, L vs Michigan
This team looks lost. Fran McCaffery keeps going nuclear and the Hawkeyes have lost their last three games by an average of 18 points.
