45 Days to Purdue Football: Byron Hubbard II

The former state champ has promise as a walk-on.

Today’s player has not seen the field yet, but he is a two-time Academic all-Big Ten selection.

Byron Hubbard II - Jr.

Westfield, IN (Westfield HS)

6’1”, 230 pounds

Linebacker

2021 Projection: Reserve

Hubbard seems like a player that can become a contributor on special teams given his time in the program. He was also a high school star at Westfield. In 2017 he had a school record 10.5 sacks. In 2016 he was huge in the state championship game with nine tackles and 1.5 sacks as the Shamrocks won the Class 5A title game 16-13 over Columbus East. That’s the kind of record you want in a walk-on.

The Academic all-Big Ten means he is a smart player. He also has some decent size and experience going for him. You can always use good walk-ons on special teams, so I would not be completely surprised to see him breakthrough there.
