Any positive momentum Purdue had from its previous five game winning streak went out the window in getting swept and even no hit by Illinois last week. I am sorry, but in the college game when you hold your opponent to just one run you should be able to scratch across a couple yourselves for a win. Purdue now sits at 10-18 on the year and a dismal 2-7 at Alexander Field.
I guess it is fortuitous this weekend’s series is at Ohio State and not at Purdue.

Schapira has had some excellent moments this year and Brooks was excellent in eight scoreless innings last week. Johnson has also been mostly solid, so the starting pitching has not been a real issue. It is mostly the bullpen combined with simply atrocious hitting at times. In 28 games this year Purdue has been shut out five times and scored 2 runs or less another 7 times. It is 1-11 in those games, winning only 2-1 in 11 innings over Michigan State.
Ohio State is one of the few teams hitting worse than Purdue in the Big Ten though. The Buckeyes are hitting just .234 as a team. Kade Kern leads them with a .365 average. Conner Pohl is a good power hitter with 8 home runs and 21 RBI. On the mound Ohio State has one of the league’s best closers with TJ Brock. He has a 2.40 ERA and seven saves. Their pitching is better overall, but not by a whole lot as they have a staff ERA of 4.84.
There is not much else to say at this point. When Purdue hits, it wins. Miles Simington has been pretty consistent and Ben Nisle has been hammering the ball of late, but Purdue continues to struggle when searching for that big hit in an inning. I don’t know how many runners Purdue has left on this year, but they were likely awarded a seat in Congress this week when the census numbers were announced.
