Purdue Basketball: Should Coach Painter Dabble in the Transfer Portal?

I am torn.

Coach Painter has lost Aaron Wheeler to the transfer portal. More than likely, I would assume that he will find a home on the East Coast, close to his family. I think we all have appreciated what Aaron has done for the program in his 4 years of being in West Lafayette.

Not only that, CMP lost 2022 guard commit the day after Shrews headed to Penn State, being a Pennsylvania native and Shrews being his primary recruiter, I think we know where that is headed.

So, this leaves CMP in an actually solid situation.

  1. He can take a 1 year rental grad transfer to fill Wheels scholarship for the 2021-2022 season.
  2. He can take a multi year grad transfer, starting in the 2021-2022 season that would essentially absorb the Jameel Brown scholarship that was out there.

To me, this is a great situation to be in and it is a win-win-win. Grab someone for a year for an immediate impact guy, grab a long term transfer, or hold the scholarship for a class of 2022 player.

There are a TON of players in the portal right now. To me, it is pretty obvious where we are flawed at, guard depth. Whether it is a true point guard or a combo guard to do both, we need someone that can play at both ends of the floor.

In the tournament, Sasha was bench for IT for most of the second half, on the solo fact that IT could keep up with the North Texas Guard’s Speed.

But, IT is also a set shooter and cannot do much with creating his own shot on offense.

If Coach Painter does get into the transfer market, I would love to see a bigger type of combo guard, someone with a skill set similar to Jaden Ivey, I mean, you won’t find a Jaden Ivey out there, but a 6-4, 200 pound guard would help out on both ends of the court.

Here are some names I am intrigued by:

Khristian Lander - Indiana University Transfer

Here me out. He left school a year early, he played for a coach that was terrible and did not develop much. The kid should just be heading into his freshman season, he was a top 25 kid for the 2021 class, but reclassified only to go to Archie’s School of Underdevelopment. An Southern Indiana Native, he could stay in state, play under a Coach that does develop his players and have 4 years remaining to play. I hate to love it.. I really do.

Armaan Franklin - Indiana University Transfer

Another IU kid and in state player, Franklin was probably the best guard IU had this year. Coach Painter recruited him hard out of high school. Armaan is a solid combo guard that could help Purdue on both ends. He would be a multi year transfer.

Marcus Carr - Minnesota Transfer

A 20 point per game scorer, Marcus will be a hot commodity. A Pennsylvania Native, he probably is headed east, but he would be a great guard to leave the Matt Painter offense with Jaden Ivey - he players fast, but scores at his own will. He will have one year left.

KyKy Tandy - Xavier Transfer

I probably know the least about Tandy, but he is a 6-2 combo guard that shoots the 3 ball at a 35% clip. He is from Kentucky, so Purdue would not be too far from home and has spent his last two seasons at Xavier, where he has averaged around 6 points per game. He would be a 2 year transfer.

Those are just some names that I have seen and come to mind. Lander seems like the furthest one away, as Paint did not really recruit him in HS, but I am crazy enough to talk myself into Franklin and I would love it.
