The Lawrence North product becomes the first Indiana Miss Basketball to come to Purdue since Karissa McLaughlin won the award in 2017.
According to Prospect Nation Smith is the 42nd ranked recruit in the country for her class and the 13th ranked guard in the country. Her skillset will be much needed. She’s listed as 5’11 and is skilled from all over the floor. Check out her highlights below. She helped lead her team to the state title in 2019-2020.
She will come to a Purdue team that has struggled mightily in recent years. The team hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since the 2016-2017 season. Current head coach Sharon Versyp was given a 6 year extension which carries her through the end of the 2021-2022 season. No information on an extension or termination has been announced at this point. When Smith committed to the Boilermakers she emphasized wanting to stay home and also indicated she was looking forward to playing for Coach Versyp. It’s great to see the best in the state come to Purdue again. Let’s hope this is the beginning of a turnaround to the once vaunted program Purdue previously was.
Congratulations to future Boilermaker Jayla Smith on her great accomplishment. It’s only the beginning!
