Heading into Sunday afternoon, it was clear Purdue needed a flawless performance to hand the #12 ranked Terrapins their second loss of the season. After today’s game, fans know that was indeed not the case as Maryland had their way with the Boilermakers winning by a score of 83-46.

Purdue struggled out of the gates and it set the tone for the rest of the ballgame. Maryland began the day on an 8-1 run in the first quarter and just kept putting their foot on the gas until the very end.

It was a blowout loss for Sharon Versyp from the opening tip, even as the game progressed and it looked like Purdue would be able to take at least something from this game, Maryland was not having it. The game was already over, but the final blow came when Purdue allowed a 17-0 run that made the deficit 35 points late in the third quarter.

The Boilermakers were held to just 24% shooting from the field and 25% from three point range in what was their worst offensive performance of the season. Nobody was able to get anything going as just 1 Boilermaker finished in double figures. That player was Kayana Traylor who finished 3-14 from the floor, Karissa McLaughlin was just 2-8 and Tamara Farquhar finished 1-7. If Purdue is going to succeed this season, those three will determine that.

This ugly loss makes it two in a row for Purdue as they fall to 5-4 on the season overall and 2-3 during Big Ten play. The Boilermakers will look to bounce back against #19th ranked Indiana on Thursday inside Mackey Arena.
