We know Nick Zecchino will be the long snapper this year, but he is a senior. Who replaces him next season? Maybe today’s player.

Brooks Royal - Jr.

Fitzgerald, GA (Fitzgerald HS)

6’2”, 200 pounds

Long Snapper

2020 Projection: Reserve at Long Snapper

Royal is listed as the third long snapper on the roster, joining Zecchino and Hunter McDonald. Royal has been around a while, however, without playing. He redshirted in 2017 and the last two seasons he has been an Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Long snapping is more than just throwing a football. On punts the long snapper often is one of the first ones down he field since the rules state they must be uncovered, so they don’t usually have to block. They sprint 45 yard down field and go for the tackler or even recover the occasional fumble.

In high school Ray Guy Prokicker.com rated him as a top prospect. He still has a profile there. it has taken a lot of patience to this point for him at Purdue. It seems likely he will not see the field for four seasons before giving it one shot next year to play. There will be a chance though.
