Sharon Versyp picked up her first commit of the 2021 class today as Jayla Smith pledged to the Boilermakers via Twitter.
She chose Purdue over offers by the likes of Butler, Miami (Ohio), Indiana State and Ball State.
Smith is currently a junior at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Indiana which is the same school that produced All-Big Ten Boilermaker Ae’Rianna Harris. She also played on the same AAU team as the prized jewel of the 2020 recruiting class in Madison Layden. It is not out of the question that both Harris and Layden did at least a little recruiting to help secure this commitment for Purdue.
She is listed as a 5’11’ shooting guard This past season, as a member of the Indiana 4A State Champion Lawrence North Wildcats, Jayla averaged 13 points per game on 40% shooting from the field. She was named a Junior Indiana All-Star this past season, as she was one of only six in the state.
By the time she steps on campus, Karissa McLaughlin will have graduated along with Tamara Farquhar so the Boilermakers will need both scoring and length on the wing, both of which Jayla Smith will bring to the table.
Welcome aboard Jayla, Boiler Up!
