The potential stars of our 2021 recruiting class are on display.

It is that time of year again, and I am happy to provide an outlet for those interested in following the Indiana High School Basketball State Tournament. It is a great place to track future Purdue stars, as well as for our alums to track their respective high schools If they grew up in Indiana.

This year is a bit different. The last few seasons we have been able to follow the following players along their tournament paths:

2019: Isaiah Thompson, Brandon Newman, and Jaden Ivey

2018: Thompson (who committed before the tournament) and Eric Hunter Jr.

2017: Sasha Stefanovic

For the first time since 2016 (when some guy named Carsen Edwards was our lone commit) Purdue does not have a single committed player in the Tournament. There are plenty of prospects, especially in the 2020 class, but with Ivey playing for LaPorte LaLumiere (who is not a member of the IHSAA and therefore does not participate) we don’t have anybody that has already committed to Purdue.

The Tournament is still a focal point of the year with some excellent matchups, as well as a quick look at future opponents. Here is this year’s sectional draw, as the Tournament gets underway next Tuesday night at 64 sites around the state:

CLASS 4A

EAST CHICAGO CENTRAL

1 Tue Hammond Morton [6-15] vs. Merrillville [8-12]

2 Wed East Chicago Central [9-10] vs. Highland [11-11]

3 Wed Lake Central [11-10] vs. Gary West [11-7]

4 Fri Munster [19-1] vs. Winner Game 1

5 Fri Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 3

6 Sat Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5

This one has our first Division I prospect, as Jalen Washington of Gary West is a rising sophomore in the 2022 class. He is the #24 national player already in that class, but is out for the year with a torn ACL. Purdue has offered him already.

VALPARAISO

1 Tue Hobart [10-10] vs. Portage [6-15]

2 Tue Chesterton [20-2] vs. Lowell [10-11]

3 Fri Valparaiso [14-8] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Crown Point [11-10] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

LAPORTE

1 Tue Culver Academy [15-4] vs. South Bend Riley [11-10]

2 Wed Michigan City [16-5] vs. LaPorte [10-11]

3 Wed South Bend Adams [19-3] vs. Mishawaka [11-9]

4 Fri Plymouth [6-15] vs. Winner Game 1

5 Fri Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 3

6 Sat Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5

Culver Academy is playing up in class after winning 3A in 2018 and finishing as runner-up last year. They are led by Indiana signee Trey Galloway and Iowa football signee Deontae Craig. Purdue did recruit both. Purdue has also looked at South Bend Riley’s Blake Wesley, a 4-star and No. 89 in the 2021 class

ELKHART

1 Tue Northridge [16-5] vs. Concord [1-17]

2 Wed Penn [9-11] vs. Elkhart Central [7-11]

3 Wed Goshen [10-10] vs. Warsaw [11-8]

4 Fri Elkhart Memorial [12-9] vs. Winner Game 1

5 Fri Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 3

6 Sat Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5

CARROLL (FORT WAYNE)

1 Tue Fort Wayne Northrop [11-11] vs. Fort Wayne North [1-19]

2 Tue East Noble [11-9] vs. DeKalb [6-14]

3 Fri Carroll (Fort Wayne) [16-5] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Fort Wayne Snider [16-6] vs. Winner Game 2

1 Tue Columbia City [9-12] vs. Huntington North [6-14]

2 Tue Homestead [13-8] vs. Fort Wayne Wayne [8-10]

3 Fri New Haven [15-5] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Fort Wayne South [7-13] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

Luke Goode, a 6’6” 185 pound shooting guard in the 2021 class plays for Homestead. Purdue has shown some interest and he is the No. 98 prospect in his class. In the Big Ten he has visited Maryland and Northwestern.

LAFAYETTE JEFF

1 Tue Marion [11-10] vs. McCutcheon [11-10]

2 Tue Kokomo [8-14] vs. Harrison (West Lafayette) [16-5]

3 Fri Logansport [8-13] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Lafayette Jeff [20-4] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

The local Lafayette sectional does not have many Purdue targets here. Brooks Barnhizer (2021) for Lafayette Jeff is an intriguing prospect as a shooter with seemingly unlimited range, but he might be more of a preferred walk-on role if Purdue got involved. Jalen Blackmon was on his way to the state scoring record for Marion as a 2021 prospect (youngest brother of James Blackmon Jr.), but he injured his knee last month.

NOBLESVILLE

1 Tue Zionsville [15-9] vs. Fishers [17-6]

2 Tue Hamilton Southeastern [16-5] vs. Carmel [14-7]

3 Fri Westfield [15-6] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Noblesville [11-12] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

As always, this will be a very balanced sectional with Zionsville coming back into it after they were shifted to Lafayette the last few years. HSE features Cleveland State signee Mabor Majak. This is one of the most even fields in the state. Carmel is your defending 4A state champion. They have a 6’6” junior guard named Brian Waddell, who is Purdue legend Matt Waddell’s son.

MUNCIE CENTRAL

1 Tue Anderson [2-20] vs. Mount Vernon (Fortville) [9-11]

2 Wed Pendleton Heights [8-14] vs. Muncie Central [8-13]

4 Fri New Palestine [11-12] vs. Winner Game 1

LAWRENCE CENTRAL

1 Tue Warren Central [15-5] vs. Indianapolis Tech [9-11]

2 Wed Indianapolis Cathedral [17-5] vs. Indianapolis Crispus Attucks [18-4]

3 Wed Lawrence North [21-1] vs. Lawrence Central [21-2]

4 Fri North Central (Indianapolis) [12-8] vs. Winner Game 1

5 Fri Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 3

6 Sat Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5

This is hands down the best sectional in the state. Lawrence North and Lawrence Central are a combined 42-3, with two of the losses being North over Central. Their only loss was to North Central. Cathedral and Crispus Attucks already played a remarkable 94-91 double overtime game for the City Championship last month. In the current 4A poll you have #2 Lawrence North, #3 Lawrence Central, and #8 Crispus Attucks, with Warren Central, North Central, and Cathedral not exactly terrible.

There is also a wealth of D1 talent here. D’Andre Davis (Louisville) and Nijel Pack (Kansas State) play for Lawrence Central along with rising 2022 prospect D’Ante Davis. Lawrence North has Tony Perkins (Iowa). This sectional will be incredible.

SOUTHPORT

1 Tue Indianapolis Roncalli [10-10] vs. Pike [14-8]

2 Tue Ben Davis [9-12] vs. Southport [8-13]

3 Fri Perry Meridian [7-13] vs. Winner Game 1

MOORESVILLE

1 Tue Avon [11-9] vs. Brownsburg [17-4]

2 Tue Terre Haute North [12-11] vs. Plainfield [17-4]

3 Fri Terre Haute South [8-15] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Mooresville [12-9] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

Avon features Jayden Brewer, a solid prospect in the 2021 class that is a 3-star and receiving interest from several local mid-majors.

SHELBYVILLE

1 Tue Greenwood [15-5] vs. Whiteland [5-15]

2 Tue Franklin Central [13-8] vs. Center Grove [7-12]

3 Fri Shelbyville [8-13] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Franklin [9-10] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

Jalen Hooks of Franklin Central is one to keep an eye on here. He is a very talented freshman forward that has already drawn some interest from Purdue.

COLUMBUS NORTH

1 Tue East Central [15-7] vs. Martinsville [1-20]

2 Tue Bloomington South [22-0] vs. Columbus East [4-17]

3 Fri Bloomington North [18-5] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Columbus North [16-5] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

The state’s No. 1 ranked team is in this sectional, as Bloomington South is undefeated and feature IU signee Anthony Leal, the No. 122 player in the 2020 class.

SEYMOUR

1 Tue Seymour [8-12] vs. Jeffersonville [16-5]

3 Fri Floyd Central [15-6] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Bedford North Lawrence [14-9] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

Jeffersonville’s Tre Coleman is a 3-star 2020 small forward that is headed out west to Nevada. He did hold a Nebraska offer at one time.

EVANSVILLE NORTH

1 Tue Evansville Harrison [9-13] vs. Jasper [16-5]

2 Tue Evansville Central [3-17] vs. Castle [10-10]

3 Fri Evansville Reitz [15-6] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Evansville North [9-11] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

The state’s best 2021 player will be in this sectional as Khristian Lander, the No. 17 prospect in that class, plays for Evansville Reitz. Yes, he has a Purdue offer, but Indiana, Louisville, and Michigan appear to be his top 3.

CLASS 3A

HAMMOND

1 Tue Calumet [10-12] vs. Griffith [12-9]

2 Tue Hammond Clark [2-18] vs. Lighthouse CPA [7-13]

4 Fri South Bend Clay [5-16] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

South Bend St. Joseph’s had an easy get for Notre Dame with 2021 commit JR Konieczny, who will be staying home as a 3-star prospect.

TWIN LAKES

1 Tue Twin Lakes [12-10] vs. Peru [16-5]

2 Wed Northwestern [16-4] vs. West Lafayette [10-11]

3 Wed Maconaquah [8-12] vs. Benton Central [7-13]

4 Fri Western [14-7] vs. Winner Game 1

5 Fri Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 3

6 Sat Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5

I have championed Tayson Parker for a while, but he is going to go for small school glory by playing at Indiana Wesleyan after he wraps up his Northwestern career this year. The Northwestern girls are a better story, as they are 29-0, playing up a class in 4A after winning two straight 3A titles, and will go for a 4A title this Saturday night with Purdue signee Madison Layden. I am planning on going to that game and will have more of an update later.

3 Fri Jay County [6-14] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Delta [16-4] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

This sectional has another straight up scorer in Hamilton Heights’ Gus Etchison. he is averaging 25.2 points per game this year and is a spindly 6’, 145 pound guard. He is the type of guy you see dropping 25 on some team in a 14 over 3 first round NCAA upset.

GREENCASTLE

1 Tue Frankfort [5-15] vs. Greencastle [15-6]

2 Wed Crawfordsville [12-9] vs. Tri-West [9-11]

3 Fri Eastbrook [1-19] vs. Winner Game 1

4 Fri Taylor [3-15] vs. Winner Game 2

5 Sat Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

If you want a straight up scorer look no further than Luke Brown here in this sectional for Blackford. The 2021 player is a bit undersized at 6’, 165 pounds, but he fills it up. He is averaging 32.3 points per game for his career and is already at 1,905 as a junior. He has unfortunately not gotten many deep tournament runs, but he has an outside shot at Damon Bailey’s all-time record next year. He has a lot of mid-major offers. His team should at least reach the final, meaning he may crack 2,000 points in just three seasons.
