I know that week after week reading these quotes can be tedious and a bit boring. Coaches rarely say anything of note because they don’t want to give the other team bulletin board material but they also want their fans to stay engaged in the process. It’s a fine line they have to walk so in some sense I understand why these quotes are almost universally bad. Sometimes though things get through and news actually gets made at these things. This wasn’t one of those times. It turns out “losing’s not fun” according to Coach Brohm so the team is “excited to get back to work” and “do our part” to get back in the win column.
When talking about the defensive effort in the second half Brohm stated the obvious when he said “everyone can see we had a hard time stopping the run” and noted that the team needs to be “a little more aggressive and make sure we attacked a little bit more.” I understand he came to these conclusions after watching the film but this was obvious to anyone watching the game in real time. We all knew Rutgers was going to run and dare Purdue to stop it but no changes were made on defense to stop them. It was maddening.
The offensive woes in the fourth quarter came under scrutiny in the press conference with Brohm noting some missed passes but then followed up by noting “being efficient, making plays, finding ways to score points, is always going to be critical and taking care of the ball.” And I think we can all agree that there’s wisdom there. Finding way to score points is critical in the game of football. #coachspeak.
Here’s where things got a bit interesting in the press conference. When asked what the top of the list priority was for the defense this week in preparation for Nebraska Brohm stated that “I need to do the best job I can of being involved in all aspects of our game. So that’s going to happen this week.” To me that sounds like he’s going to step in and dictate more of what Defensive Coordinator Bob Diaco is doing this week. I for one applaud that move because I’ve seen nothing out of Diaco that had engendered confidence in his ability to properly use the personnel on this team to it’s fullest ability.
Some quicker hitter news here:
- Jared Sparks has opted out.
- Marvin Grant was injured and didn’t dress.
- Same with Semisi Fakasiieiki.
- There will be a senior day ceremony at the game this weekend.
Until next time folks.
