Big Ten Women’s Basketball Standings Update: January 31st

The Hawkeyes take a 1 game lead atop the conference.

Maryland and Iowa both extended their winning streaks as they make a push to win the Big Ten title, Northwestern falls out of the top spot, Purdue and Indiana are both on three game winning streaks ahead of their rivalry game on Monday.

Here are the standings as of January 31st:

Iowa (18-3, 9-1 Big Ten) Iowa now sits all alone atop the Big Ten standings after sweeping Michigan State and Penn State and extended their winning streak to 9 games. They will be tested soon with 3 of their next 4 games coming on the road.Next three opponents: @ Michigan 2/2, vs. Nebraska 2/6, @ Purdue 2/9.

Northwestern (18-3, 8-2 Big Ten) The Wildcats fell at the hands of Maryland then bounced back to beat Michigan at home to fall into a tie for second place in the conference with the Terrapins. Next three opponents: @ Penn State 2/2, vs. Michigan State 2/10, @ Michigan 2/13.

Maryland (17-4, 8-2 Big Ten) Maryland has picked up some very nice wins as of late defeating Indiana and Northwestern and are now tied for second in the standings with Northwestern. They will have the opportunity to separate themselves from the middle of the pack with upcoming games against Indiana and Rutgers. Next three opponents: vs. Michigan State 2/3, @ Indiana 2/6, vs. Rutgers 2/9.

Indiana (17-5, 7-3 Big Ten) The Hoosiers have won three in a row after dropping three straight. They will face a tough week ahead when they go to Mackey Arena then will look to avenge their loss to Maryland. Next three opponents: @ Purdue 2/3, vs. Maryland 2/6, @ Nebraska 2/9.

Rutgers (16-4, 6-3 Big Ten) Rutgers dropped a tough one in Ann Arbor before blowing out Illinois at home. They have the opportunity to gain back ground when they play two of the bottom teams in the conference. Next three opponents: @ Minnesota 2/2, vs. Penn State 2/6, @ Maryland 2/9.

Purdue (15-7, 6-4 Big Ten) The Boilers have won three straight games, two of which are on the road. They have a huge home game on Monday against IU then they go to a struggling Michigan team before hosting the Big Ten leader Iowa. Next three opponents: vs. Indiana 2/3, @ Michigan 2/6, vs. Iowa 2/9.

Nebraska (15-6, 5-5 Big Ten) The Cornhuskers picked up a close win at Wisconsin before losing to Minnesota on the road as well. They will take on the Buckeyes at home before going to Iowa to face the Hawkeyes. Next three opponents: vs. Ohio State 2/2, @ Iowa 2/6, vs. Indiana 2/9.

Michigan (13-7, 4-5 Big Ten) The Wolverines has been up and down this season and continued that theme beating Rutgers and then falling at the hands of Northwestern. Next three opponents: vs. Iowa 2/2, vs. Purdue 2/6, @ Minnesota 2/10.

Ohio State (11-9, 4-5 Big Ten) Ohio State dropped their only game of the week against Maryland but have the chance to pick up some wins against three teams in the bottom half of the league. Next three opponents: @ Nebraska 2/2, @ Illinois 2/6, vs. Wisconsin 2/9.

Michigan State (11-10, 4-6 Big Ten) Michigan State is now on a three game skid after losing to Iowa and Purdue. They have a tough stretch ahead against three of the top four teams in the standings. Next three opponents: @ Maryland 2/3, @ Northwestern 2/10, vs. Rutgers 2/13.

Minnesota (13-8, 3-7 Big Ten) Minnesota split their games against Indiana and Nebraska. They will look to drag themselves closer to the top against Rutgers and Wisconsin. Next three opponents: vs. Rutgers 2/2, @ Wisconsin 2/6, vs. Michigan 2/10.

Wisconsin (10-11, 2-8 Big Ten) Wisconsin dropped two straight against Nebraska and Indiana. They have struggled mightily during Big Ten play and are now below .500 overall. Next three opponents: @ Illinois 2/2, vs. Minnesota 2/6, @ Ohio State 2/9.

Illinois (10-10, 1-8 Big Ten) Illinois dropped yet another conference game against Rutgers to fall to .500 on the year. Next three opponents: vs. Wisconsin 2/2, vs. Ohio State 2/6, @ Penn State 2/9.

Penn State (7-14, 1-9 Big Ten) Penn State suffered two more losses in Big Ten play and Nittany Lions fans probably wish they were tanking for something at least. Next three opponents: vs. Northwestern 2/2, @ Rutgers 2/6, vs. Illinois 2/9.
