Today’s player has made some surprising moves on the depth chart for a walk-on quarterback.

Aidan O’Connell - So.

Lincolnshire, IL (Stevenson HS)

6’3”, 210 pounds

2019 Projection: Reserve at Quarterback

The biggest news about O’Connell is that after two years as a walk-on he has reached the No. 3 spot on the depth chart at quarterback. With Elijah Sindelar limited during the spring and Nick Sipe sidelined due to a back injury, O’Connell got extensive reps during spring practice. That paid off, as he is now No. 3 on the depth chart behind Sindelar and redshirt freshman Jack Plummer.

O’Connell had quite the high school career and turned down a few smaller college offers to walk on at Purdue. He set school records for passing yards (2,741) and touchdown passes (26) in his lone year as the starter at Stevenson High in Illinois. He was also a solid basketball player, playing point guard on a highly rated team that included Indiana’s Justin Smith. They won more than 20 games and made deep tournament runs in each of their last two years.

O’Connell will only likely see the field if Sindelar and Plummer get hurt this year, but he did impress during the spring game. He is a viable option in an emergency.
