Today we have another freshman coming out of a redshirt year that is looking to make an impact.

Byron Perkins - Fr. (RS)

Chicago, IL (De La Salle HS)

6’2”, 190 pounds

Defensive Back

2019 projection: Reserve at defensive back

Perkins is an interesting prospect as a defensive back. At 6’2” he has great size for he the position. In his final year of high school he had three interceptions and a fumble on defense while also playing receiver and returning kicks for a 6-4 team. He was a 2-star commit from De La Salle HS in Chicago and Purdue was his lone power conference offer. That makes him a “Diamond in the Rough” candidate. We were his top choice all along:

“I knew from the jump that I wanted to commit to Purdue, but it was just a matter of if my parents wanted me to go there,” he said. “Purdue was No. 1 in my mind all throughout the recruitment process. But my mother was more worried about my education — you know, being mom — than my athletic career. She wanted me to take a look at Miami of Ohio.

”I finally got my parents on board this (past) weekend. My mom was very happy Purdue was my decision. I was surprised because she made me wait that whole time, but that’s mom. It took awhile to get my parents to hop on board.”
