The preseason coaches poll is out! That’s the good news. The bad news is that for the 13th consecutive year Purdue is not in it with any votes. In 2005 Purdue started the year 16th before a 2-6 start. We received 7 votes in the first poll of 2006, but have not been part of the preseason polls since. Here is the full poll, with teams on our schedule highlighted:
- Clemson (59) 1,619
- Alabama (6) 1,566
- Georgia 1,447
- Oklahoma 1,415
- Ohio State 1,368
- LSU 1,218
- Michigan 1,155
- Florida 1,103
- Notre Dame 1,100
- Texas 1,038
- Texas A&M 893
- Washington 834
- Oregon 787
- Penn State 699
- Utah 642
- Auburn 606
- Wisconsin 436
- Central Florida 436
- Iowa 343
- Michigan State 313
- Washington State 274
- Syracuse 227
- Stanford 200
- Iowa State 169
- Northwestern 161
Other receiving votes: Nebraska 152; Boise State 118; Mississippi State 111; Miami 94; Army 91; Kentucky 79; Virginia Tech 64; Texas Christian 63; Southern California 47; Utah State 32; Fresno State 32; Virginia 30; Cincinnati 25; West Virginia 24; Memphis 24; Oklahoma State 20; South Carolina 15; NC State 12; Duke 10; Boston College 5; Florida State 4; Baylor 4; Appalachian State 4; North Texas 3; Houston 3; UCLA 2; Temple 2; Arizona State 2; Troy 1; Tennessee 1; Mississippi 1; Minnesota 1.
Purdue will have a chance to expand on its three-game winning streak vs. ranked opponents (despite having entered last season without a ranked win in seven years) as early as game 3 vs. TCU depending on if the Horned Frogs climb in the top 25. It is a tough schedule, but not an overwhelming one. Four of Purdue’s five road opponents are in the preseason top 25.
The good news for the Big Ten is that Ohio State, its top rated team, does not have to go to Iowa or Purdue this year, so they might make the playoff!
