Purdue Football: Weekend Recruiting Update

Purdue had several big names on campus this weekend. Did the Boilermakers impress?

Things went well for the Boilermakers this weekend, as every recruit on campus had solid reviews regarding their visits. That said, I’ve yet to see a recruit say “meh, that visit was lame” so take anything you read with a grain of salt.

Chris Mayo - Offensive Guard - New Jersey

It looks like a three way race between Kentucky, Purdue and West Virginia. Mayo has a visit scheduled for West Virginia this weekend. He would be a crucial pick up for the Boilermakers who are in desperate need of early impact interior linemen.

He has yet to announce a commitment date.

Garnett Hollis Jr. - Cornerback - Tennessee

Hollis has announced his official final 3 as Northwestern, Purdue, and Vanderbilt. The in-state Commodores will get Hollis’s final visit this weekend. At 6’1, 185, he has size the defensive staff look for in an outside corner. He would be a welcomed addition to the secondary.

He will commit on his birthday, June, 22nd (which is also my birthday, please send money).

I like the Boilermakers chances.

Antonio Stevens - Safety - Tennessee

Hollis and Stevens are teammates on the Battle Ground Academy high school team, and while not officially a package deal, they would be a crucial pair to add to the Purdue secondary. Stevens has plenty of options, but as of now, it Louisville appears to be the Boilermakers main competition for Stevens’s commitment.

Stevens has yet to set a commitment date.

Malachi Melton - Cornerback / Wide Receiver - New Jersey

Melton has the potential to play either WR or CB in college, but it appears that Purdue likes him on the defensive side of the ball. Melton will officially visit Rutgers June 21st and 22nd.

Melton is Rutgers legacy (both his parents are former Rutgers athletes and his brother Bo is a starting receiver for the Scarlet Knights, so it’s going to be tough to pull him out of New Jersey, but Purdue looks to have a solid shot at landing the Garden State Athlete.

Melton will announce his commitment sometime between July 10th and 20th.

Marcus Harper - Offensive Guard - Illinois

Harper is an interior lineman out of Chicago that the coaching staff covets. It looks like Purdue is in a battle with Oregon for the big man from Simeon High School. I honestly can’t remember Purdue going toe to toe with the Ducks for a recruit before. Harper will visit Oregon this weekend.

He has an announcement date set for June 27th.

Deondre Buford - Offensive Tackle - Michigan

I haven’t seen anything regarding Buford’s visit. He’s currently seen as a heavy Kentucky lean.

He has yet to set an announcement date.

Kyle King - Defensive End - Indiana

Kyle King, a 247 composite 3* (85) defensive end out of New Palestine High School in Palestine, Indiana made his way to campus for an unofficial visit this weekend and left with an offer in hand.

King has yet to take an official visit to any school. He was considered a Michigan State lean after the Spartans offered him on June 7th, but a Purdue offer may change things a bit for the 6’4, 245 pound defensive end.

I’ll try and keep you updated as things progress, but this appears to be a Purdue/Indiana/Michigan State battle with the Spartans holding an early, but not insurmountable lead.

King does not have an announcement date set yet.
