81 Days to Purdue Football: Darius Pittman

the junior TE should have a larger role this year.

NCAA Football: Purdue at Nebraska Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

There is a lot of hard work for little glory when it comes to being a blocking tight end, but for two years that is what today’s player has done.

Darius Pittman - Jr.

Gulfport, MS (St. Stanislaus HS)

6’3”, 250 pounds

Tight End

2019 Projection: Contributor at Tight End

While Brycen Hopkins and Cole Herdman have been getting all he glory as receiving TEs the last two seasons, Pittman has been doing the dirty work in the trenches. He was able to play immediately as a true freshman in 2017 and saw action in 10 games. He caught his only pass, a 7 yarder, in the Bowl game against Arizona, however.

Last season he saw action in all 13 games, but only caught a pass in one. He had a 16 yard catch in the blowout of Illinois. This was all after he caught 61 passes for 690 yards and 9 TDs in his final year of high school.

This coming season Pittman could have more of a pass catching role with Herdman gone, but he has still been a valuable contributor as a blocker.
