This time, it is Nick Holt’s son, Ben, fresh off a 100 plus tackle season, which lead the Hilltoppers this past year.
Ben makes the third WKU grad transfer, joining T.J. McCollum in year 1, Dennis Edwards in year two and now Ben in year 3.
This was needed, while the linebacking core is getting older, finally, it still lacks depth. Before Ben was announced, our back-up linebackers were penciled in as Jaylan Alexander and Jack Smith coming off of the redshirt, as well as the plethora of incoming linebackers we have coming for the 2019 class.
So, what does this mean? First it gives us depth for sure. I was not comfortable with true freshmen backing up linebacker positions, as they grow at Purdue. Second, it may give us a starter, as Derrick Barnes is expected to play more of the LEO position this year, to rush the passer more. Lastly, it gives us another 5th year senior, joining Markus Bailey.
With this move, we have 6 guys with Linebacker ready bodies, Markus Bailey, Cornel Jones (Bad, bad man - he is good), Derrick Barnes, Jaylan Alexander, Jack Smith and now Ben Holt.
Welcome to Purdue, Ben!
