On a relatively slow news day we got a 4:25pm bomb from Mike Carmin of the Lafayette Journal & Courier:
BREAKING: #Purdue co-defensive coordinator Nick Holt won't return in 2020 https://t.co/qNAO0mCatZ via @JCOnline
— mike carmin (@carmin_jc) December 9, 2019
Holt has been at Purdue for the past three seasons and his 2017 defense showed tremendous improvement over the previous few years. This year it struggled, however, giving up a wealth of big plays. It had an inability to get off the field on third downs, but injuries to Lorenzo Neal, Cornel Jones, Markus Bailey, and others were also a critical factor.
Holt has had a fiery personality on the sidelines and definitely helped turned around the defense when he first got here. He has also handled play calling duties in his co-coordinator role, so that will change.
Coach Brohm has some cash to go find a new coordinator. Holt was well paid as an assistant, making north of $625,000. There is also some promise coming as the front four next year should be fantastic with Neal returning along with Derrick Barns, Anthony Watts, and George Karlaftis.
