The countdown to basketball has reached its biggest stretch. We have one player profile per day left until he season tips off Wednesday night against Green Bay, so let’s meet the freshman from Valparaiso.
Brandon Newman - Fr.
Valparaiso, IN (Valparaiso HS)
6’5”, 190 pounds
Guard
2019-20 Projection: Contributor at guard
Newman comes to Purdue known for his shooting and scoring prowess. I only saw him play in person once, and that was last season when Valparaiso played Zionsville and it was Newman vs. Isaiah Thompson. It was not Newman’s best game as he was 7 of 25 from the floor, but there were still some impressive moments. He finished with 22 points and showed he can both shoot and attack the rim. One one occasion he elevated and attempted a vicious dunk that didn’t connect, but really showcased his athleticism.
He finished his career at Valpo with 1,577 points and had a school record 49 point game against Concord. He averaged 19.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in his career too.
I really like Newman’s size and how it can translate to Purdue. It seems like he could play the two or the three in his career. He has the ability to score from he perimeter or going to the basket. As always, his impact on defense will be key too. During part of that game he shifted over onto Thompson and had a significant size advantage, but it was only for a handful of possessions.
Newman will contribute as a freshman.
