The release of the official roster means we can update the scholarship grid a little more.

Today Purdue finally released its official roster for the 2018 football season. That means we can update the scholarship grid as well. The grid is far from official, but I am going by what players have been recruited with scholarship offers, what walk-ons have received scholarships since (like Jacob Thieneman and Eric Swingler) and what members of the respective recruiting classes didn’t make it here.

Here is the grid:

Now, important notes:

  • Chazmyn Turner returns to the active roster. He missed last season with a torn ACL and wasn’t even on the spring roster, but he has returned now as a junior. Given the lack of depth ont he defensive line this is good news.
  • Freshman linebacker Jack Smith, a recruit from Florida, is not on the roster. The 3-star linebacker signed an LOI, but it doesn’t look good for him since he was not on the roster today. Ed. Note: Smith qualified as did Willie Lane, according to today's practice notes. I have added them back to the chart.
  • Mike Little, Brandon Shuman, and DJ Edwards were all scholarship guys on last year’s roster that are absent. Little and Shuman would be juniors, so this frees up two spots going forward. Edwards redshirted last season and was a 6’1” 3-star receiver.
  • The losses of Shuman, Edwards, and Smith, but the gain of Turner and Lane, leaves Purdue with three open spots for next season’s recruiting class as of now. With the class already at 21 players and the rule that you can only sign 25 per class, there are really only four spots left for the 2019 class for the likes of David Bell, JJ Weaver, etc. As it stands now, Purdue would lose only 14 scholarship seniors after the 2019 season.
  • Speaking of walk-ons getting scholarships, It certainly looks like at least a few will get awarded a scholarship at least for 2018 sometime in camp. According to this list we are at 81 scholarship players for 2018, meaning 4 walk-ons could be awarded a scholarship. If you have them you might as well use them.
  • As mentioned above, Jacob Thieneman and Eric Swingler have moved from walk-on to scholarship. Strong candidates among the walk-on seniors to earn one are Jarrett Burgess and Antonio Blackmon because they have already played extensively. Aaron Banks, the 5th year QB is a candidate, and he played very briefly in 2015. Junior walk-on Malclm Dotson could be a candidate, but I believe he is already on a track scholarship. Sophomore Brennan Thieneman is a possibility as well because he has seen playing time. There are a handful of 5th year walk-ons that have never played like Conor Sweeney, Brian Bravo, and Ryan Sadkowski.
  • Also related to walk-ons, we have new ones. The lack of depth at linebacker (we only have five on scholarship, and one is a true freshman) has brought on some freshman walk-on linebackers. Cade Morgan, Tim Johns, and Jones Asher all come from the southside of Indy. Asher and Morgan were juniors on Roncalli’s undefeated state championship team in 2016, so they might get a look out of need. I do like that Cornel Jones and Derrick Barnes have bulked up to 240.
  • Other newcomers as walk-ons are: Alfred Armour - RB and Ryan James - WR
