The sophomore safety had a solid debut last season.

Today is the first day that we have a complete roster available. It is also the day practice starts for Purdue football. In just four weeks the season starts against Northwestern, so let’s get to know one of the likely contributors for that game.

Simeon Smiley - So.

Pensacola, FL (Pensacola Catholic HS)

6’, 205 pounds

Safety

2018 Projection: Contributor at safety

While Navon Mosley and Jacob Thieneman have the two starting safety spot on lockdown, Smiley is a critical reserve with experience. He is listed as Mosley’s top backup, and he played in all 13 games last season as a redshirt freshman. He finished with 17 total tackles on the season, and his best games were at the end of the year. He had four tackles each against Indiana and Arizona in the bowl game.

Smiley could play more this season as Purdue goes with a 4-2-5 look due to who it is facing and the dearth of experience at linebacker. that would put him at hte key nickel position where he would have to be prepared for the run, but also ready to cover the pass. That’s a key spot for a young player.
