B1G Coaches Anonymous Comments About Purdue and Brohm

New, 11 comments

Spoiler alert: they’re an improvement compared to comments over the last few years.

NCAA Football: Big Ten Football Media Day Patrick Gorski-USA TODAY Sports

Every year, Athlon Sports asks the Big Ten coaches to comment anonymously about their fellow B1G coaches and rivals. It’s always a great piece to see how other coaches praise some schools, while taking jabs at others, like this comment about Illinois:

“Are we really that surprised that Illinois has been absolutely atrocious, and has won five games in the last two years?”

Unfortunately, Illinois cannot fire back at this comment since they don’t have a cannon.

Anyways, here’s the comments about Purdue and Jeff Brohm:

“This is Exhibit A of how the right coach can change everything. That program was a joke the last couple of years. They didn’t do anything well. They certainly didn’t play hard and play like they were invested in the program, their coach or themselves. Now look. What a job by Jeff (Brohm).”

”It became pretty clear in the second half of the season that Elijah Sindelar was the quarterback they had. He stands tall in that pocket and can sling it. They lost a couple of really good receivers, but (Jackson) Anthrop is a darn good player, and they’ve recruited skill guys fairly well the last couple of years.”

”That offense will get more help with the two tailbacks returning, and a pretty good line that started to figure it out near the end of last season.”

”The biggest shock of all last year is how well that team played defensively. They lose a lot from that front four that really was the nucleus of the defense. The one guy that does come back is the wide body in the middle, Lorenzo Neal. What a player he is. The perfect run stuffer. He just eats up space.”

”I really like (LB) Markus Bailey. He’s a ball player. He will be one of the best defensive players in our league.”

Obviously, there is a lot of praise for Brohm and Purdue, with the only concern being Purdue’s defense this season given the graduations and departures this offseason. Even compared to last year’s comments, this is an improvement where coaches showed that they liked Jeff Brohm, but were skeptical given Purdue’s roster.

And of course, who can forget what the B1G coaches said about you-know-who:

“What they were doing on defense last year didn’t make a lot of sense. It was just very predictable and didn’t do anything to cause you problems...”

“...[I] don’t think I can name a single good player off that defense, and it was so easy to scheme them up because you knew what you were getting, you could check to certain things.”

Oof, that still hurts. Let’s go back to a good quote:

“This is Exhibit A of how the right coach can change everything. That program was a joke the last couple of years. They didn’t do anything well. They certainly didn’t play hard and play like they were invested in the program, their coach or themselves. Now look. What a job by Jeff (Brohm).”

Ah, much better.
