Purdue Basketball Recruiting: Mason Gillis Commits

Purdue picks up Vince Edwards 2.0.

NCAA Basketball: Big Ten Conference Tournament-Purdue vs Michigan Nicole Sweet-USA TODAY Sports

Vince Edwards was just drafted into the NBA after a successful 4-year career in West Lafayette.

Today Matt Painter got his replacement.

I apologize for getting to this story late, as I was in Cincinnati all day, but today we got the second member of the 2019 basketball recruiting class as Mason Gillis, a 6’7”, 210 pound forward from New Castle committed to coach Painter’s program. He is currently ranked 122nd nationally by both Rivals and 247.

Gillis is a very versatile forward in the mold of Edwards. Here are his highlights:

This past season he had New Castle ranked No. 1 in Class 3A for much of the season. the Trojans went 27-3, losing only to Carmel by 2, Beech Grove by 10, and Class 3A state champion Culver Academy by 5 in the semi-state. His team had a win over Class 2A state champion Oak Hill as well as a really good Marion team in the regional at Marion.

This season he will have a chance to test himself against some of the best in the state, as New Castle is one of the Class 3A favorites. They will play in the prestigeous Southport Shootout on December 8th against a team to be determined. A January 26 home game against Carmel will be good, as will a February 5th game at Hamilton Southeastern.

This commitment leaves Purdue with two open spots for 2019, which would expand to three if Carsen Edwards goes pro early.

Painter still has a shot at some solid talent for 2019, as Trayce Jackson-Davis and Keion Brooks are out there as in-state talent. This is a very good pickup though. He will be a solid 4-year contributor.
