96 Days Until Purdue Football: Jake Herr and Ray Ellis

DOUBLE WHAMMY HERE.

NCAA Football: Purdue at Rutgers Dennis Schneidler-USA TODAY Sports

A good ole 2 for 1 here. We are now 96 days out from the season and we have a couple of depth players.

Jake Herr - Junior

Carmel, Indiana - Carmel High School

6’5”, 230 Pounds

Punter

2018 Projection: Reserve Punter

Herr is behind stand out punter Joe Schopper. He is the size of a tight end, but he is the back up punter. He did not record any stats last season. But he was academic all B1G.

Unless Schopper goes down, Herr will remain his back up for the entirety of the season. Herr is a former walk on from powerhouse Carmel.

Ray Ellis - Senior

San Jose, California - City College of San Francisco

6’4”, 305 Pounds

Defensive Tackle

2018 projection: Reserve at Defensive Tackle or Possible Starter

Ellis came to Purdue last season as a JuCo transfer. He was buried on the depth chart, but there will be plenty of opportunities this season as we do not have nearly as much depth.

Once Eddy Wilson was ruled out for the Bowl Game, Ellis gained his opportunity. He appeared in the game and recorded a sack. His biggest issue was catching up to the speed on Division 1 ball.

After having a year to work on his body and acclimate to the speed of the B1G, expect Ellis to appear in more games and maybe start a few. The opportunity is there for him to take.
