Purdue Football Recruiting: 2019 Quarterbacks

Who do we have and who are we going after?

NCAA Football: Nebraska at Purdue Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Over the next couple of weeks I am going to breakdown position by position who we have committed and who we are going after for the 2019 class. First off we have quarterbacks.

Quarterback is a position where we have a ton of depth, in just about every class. Here is a quick look at the depth chart:

1- Elijah Sindelar

2- David Blough

3- Nick Sipe

4- Jack Plummer

There is a ton of talent in the quarterback room, but with Jeff Brohm being the head coach, he is always chasing quarterback talent, with incoming freshman or on the transfer market. So, who are we going to chase after for the 2019 class?

Transfer Maybe?:

Hunter Johnson:

The former blue chip prospect, 5*, 2nd best quarterback in the 2017 class, from Brownsburg, Indiana, recently announced his intent to transfer from Clemson. He reportedly is interested in Northwestern and Purdue. Purdue was in on him early in HS, but that was with Hazell, Hazell stunk at recruiting though. There is a potential to start quicker at Northwestern, but either way, he will have to sit this upcoming season.

If Johnson were to come to Purdue, he would be the quarterback of this class. He is a great talent that fits our scheme, I would love to have him.

2019 Prospects (Offered):

Paul Piferi - Villa Park, California (Villa Park High School)

Piferi comes from the same high school as Nick Sipe, just a few years later. Piferi is a pro-style quarterback. He comes in at 6’5”, 215 Pounds. He is being recruited nation wide, with offers from the west coast all the way to the east coast.

Piferi has a big time arm for a high school quarterback. His size allows him to see over the offensive line and scan the field with ease. He should be on campus for a visit sometime this summer.

Connor Bazelak - Dayton, Ohio (Archbishop Alter High School)

Bazelak is another pro style quarterback. According to 247 sports, who have him ranked as a 3*, they say Bazelak is warm on Purdue. At 6’4”, 205 Pounds, he is another big quarterback that you can see over the line with ease.

Once again, you can see that he has a big time arm, something that Coach Brohm covets. With he being so close to Purdue, maybe we could see him on camous this summer fora prospect camp.

Zach Calzada - Buford, Georgia (Lanier High School)

Zach is a kid out of the state of Georgia, a state that we have started to recruit pretty hard. Calzada is another pro style quarterback at 6’3”, 190 Pounds. To me, he isn’t as big as a deep ball thrower as the other guys, but he appears to be deadly accurate with his short and intermediate passing game. I do think he is a better scrambler as well.

Grant Gunnell - Houston, Texas (St. Pius X High School)

Grant is the biggest of the quarterbacks we are recruiting. He stands a towering 6’6”, 225 Pounds. Gunnell is the highest rated quarterback of the group, minus Hunter Johnson. He has offers from just about everyone, including Alabama. He recently visited Arizona. In my opinion he is probably headed to a school in the south somewhere.

If you can take one thing away from this is that Coach Brohm is basically recruiting pro-style quarterbacks only. You can tell even with the roster we have. He inherited Sindelar, but there was an obvious push for him to be starting QB last year as he fits his mold better, Blough who can run a bit, but is the shortest of the group. Then, you have both Sipe and Plummer who are about 6’5”, 220.

Coach Brohm has a mold he wants and he will find those guys. I am excited to see what happens with this 2019 position.
