Looking ahead to 2020: Don't attack Brohm if his 2020 class isn't as good as 2019

Brohm's 2019 class is looking to be the second best Purdue recruiting class in modern times. That may lead you to believe that maybe we have turned a page and we will consistently be in the top 40. I actually think next year's class will be better than Hazell, but still not highly rated. Here's why:

1) Sheer numbers.

This year's class is looking to be a 25 person class. Next year's may be around 15, which depends on attrition. If we're in the top 40 with a class of that size, it means our average is right around an .88 via 247, or a 4*. For reference, in 2018, Stanford had a class of 15 and averaged 0.88 and ranked 40. I don't see us averaging that high next year, and here's partly why.

2) Talent in the Midwest is way, way down.

Let's look at the total number of 4 and 5 stars in each state touching Indiana in 2019 and 2020 classes. Brohm has definitely shown a preference for recruiting the Midwest and then going south to fill in his classes

Indiana

2019: 6

2020: 1

Illinois:

2019: 4

2020: 6

Kentucky

2019: 8

2020: 3

Michigan

2019: 9

2020: 8

Ohio:

2019: 12

2020: 6

This could and definitely will change in a years time, but expect the big boys to gobble up most of that talent. For those keeping track, that's 39 in 2019 and 24 in 2020, with a lot of the reductions in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, the three states Brohm probably recruits the best in.

3) Brohm really hasn't shown he can recruit much outside of WR rankings-wise.

In his first real class (2018) the three top recruits were WRs, with one 4 star being Moore. In 2019, assuming we get Bell, 2 of his 5 four stars are WRs, with Rice being really close to another one. He can recruit the hell out of WR, however, if people play to rankings, there may not be much immediate playing time there for several years. Can Brohm get people to come here and play an ancillary role or sit at that position? Can he start recruiting higher ranked people at other positions? We will see.
