Rachel is covering the Minnesota second round match tonight, so I was called in from the bullpen to cover Purdue’s NCAA Tournament second round match against Kentucky. heading in the Wildcats were daunting. They had not lost a home match all season, they were undefeated in SEC play, and they had won 22 consecutive matches on their way to a 26-4 record.
In short, they crushed Purdue.
The Boiler managed to keep it close in the first two sets. Kentucky won 25-20 and 25-21 in the first two sets. I caught the second set and much of it was Purdue playing catch-up. We could get within a point or two, but couldn’t get overr the hump to take a lead. The third set was pretty much a disaster as Kentucky won 25-14 for the sweep.
I admittedly don’t know a lot about volleyball stats, so I will let Rachel do those in her season breakdown, but Purdue was out-hit and one ace to kentucky’s 8. They just looked like a sharper team in the part I saw, too.
Purdue closes the year at 24-9, but was a young team with just three seniors. Sherridan Atkinson, Brooke Peters, and Erin Williams were the lone seniors on the roster. Expect Purdue to be a top 15 team yet again next season.
