It’s rivalry week again! Purdue plays for three rivalry trophies, but perhaps the least known of these is the Purdue Cannon between Purdue and Illinois. The Boilers lead the Cannon portion of the series 35-29-2 and has won two in a row. The overall series is still in favor of the Illini at 44-43-6, so Purdue can tie the overall series for the first time since 1905. That year Purdue won 29-0 to tie the overall series at 6-6-2. Illinois followed with eight wins and two ties to take the overall lead until now.
This is a critical game for both teams. An Illinois win means four victories and a real shot at bowl eligibility with games left against Nebraska, Minnesota, Maryland, and Northwestern. For Purdue, there probably is not a path towards bowl eligibility without a win in Champaign.
And, always, Darrell Hazell won twice in champaign, so how hard can it be?
