Week 6 Big Ten Preview

Purdue has the week off, so we get to watch everyone beat each other up.

NCAA Football: Boston College at Purdue Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

It is always a strange week when Purdue has the week off. I am never sure which game to watch or what to do. This weekend, weather permitting, I was planning to finally stain my deck and watch Florida State-Miami. There is still plenty of B1G action, however.

Maryland (3-1, 1-0) at #15 Michigan (4-1, 2-0) Noon, ABC

I still don’t know what to think of Maryland, but asking them to get this game is a pretty tall order. The Wolverines have been playing extremely well since the Notre dame loss, setting up another solid 8-4 or 9-3 season depending on if they lose to Michigan State or not. We know the Terps can play with them after the Texas win, but there is also that Temple loss. Michigan 31, Maryland 17

Northwestern (1-3, 1-1) at Michigan State (3-1, 1-0) Noon, Fox Sports 1

The most disappointing team in the conference has been Northwestern. Coming off of a 10-win season they got the win at Purdue and have done nothing since. Now they have a complete collapse on their hands. With Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Notre Dame still to go they may not even make a bowl game. They have just been off since Purdue and I lament that our Boilers really let that one get away. Michigan State 24, Northwestern 14

Illinois (2-2, 0-1) at Rutgers (1-4, 0-2) Noon, BTN

Yes, this is a Big Ten game. The Illini can revive some bowl hopes with a win. The loser stands a real chance of going winless in conference play. The Illini have lost 13 straight Big Ten games dating back to a win over Michigan State in 2016. Rutgers has been the worst Power 5 conference team in America this year and they are 7-29 in the conference since joining the Big Ten. At least the Illini have shown a pulse so far. Illinois 30, Rutgers 21

Iowa (3-1, 0-1) at Minnesota (3-1, 0-1) 3:30pm, BTN

It’s the Floyd of Rosedale game! Sure, the West has probably already been won by Wisconsin, but this is still always a fun little rivalry game. How can you not have fun parading a giant bronze pig around the field? Floyd has been in Iowa City for the last three years, all by 7 points or less. Expect a low scoring conservative game like the last two have been. Iowa 20, Minnesota 14

Indiana (4-1, 1-1), at #3 Ohio State (5-0, 2-0) 4pm, FOX

The longest active losing streak of one team to another is 24 games by TCU against Texas A&M. The next longest is 22 games, and four series are that lopsided: Vanderbilt-Alabama, LSU-Louisiana-Lafayette, Michigan-Indiana and Ohio State-Indiana. The Hoosiers haven’t won a game in this series since 1988. They have had a few close calls, but I think this streak goes on for a while. Ohio State 45, Indiana 17

Nebraska (0-4, 0-2) at #16 Wisconsin (3-1, 1-0) 7:30pm, BTN

Nebraska is bad, y’all. That is a long term rebuild and I still am not sold on Scott Frost because many of his press conferences are Hazellian. The Badgers are pretty much in hibernation until the Big Ten championship game. A fun scenario is them losing to Ohio State and Penn State, Purdue losing to Michigan State and Ohio State, and the November 17 game (assuming Northwestern continues to struggle) suddenly being for the B1G West. Wisconsin 38, Nebraska 24
