Purdue Football Scholarship Grid: Three More Departures

By our numbers Purdue is at 85 on scholarship now.

Thanks to Mike Carmin at the Lafayette Journal & Courier we now know of three more departures from the Purdue football program. In his offseason blog posted last night it was announced that C.J. Parker, Andy Chelf, and Sawyer Dawson have left hte program:

C.J. Parker

Here was his announcement:

I had originally thought Parker was already done, but he transferred from Mt. San Jacinto junior college in California to Purdue before the 2016 season and had 3 seasons to use two years of eligibility. In 2016 he played in all 12 games and had 35 tackles plus an interception he returned for 50 yards against Northwestern. He was expected to be a starter this season but tore his ACL in the spring and missed the entire year. As a graduate he can play immediately elsewhere.

Andy Chelf

Chelf has been witht he program for three years, but has yet to see the field. It has mostly been due to bad luck. He tore his ACL and missed the 2016 season as a result. Then this year, after having a decent showing as a reserve linebacker in the spring game, he was shot in the torso during a bizarre off-campus incident. That even occurred the night of the spring game. According to Carmin, he is on track to graduate in May, but may be done with football for good. I don’t blame him.

Sawyer Dawson

Dawson is another player that just finished his third year with the program. As a redshirt freshman he saw action in four games and got one tackle. This season he did not get any stats, as he was passed over by three true freshman linebackers in Cornel Jones, Derrick Barnes, and Tobias Larry. If he drops down to FCS lower he would ahve two years left.

By my count, this now has us exactly at the 85 scholarship limit.

What’s starting to become more apparent is that Hazell’s final two recruiting classes are getting recruited over and the guys that are not rising on the depth chart by years 3 and 4 are seeing the writing on the wall. The 2016 class, which had only six three-star commitments, has only three of those six players left.

This chart, as you’ll see, includes Rondale Moore, who won’t sign until the more traditional signing day. It does not include JuCo transfer Evander Craft, who is still up in the air. Also, George Karlaftis is on there starting in 2019. Coach Brohm is still actively searching for more grad transfers as it worked out so well for us this past season. That means there will be more attrition, and already the 2018 roster will have more Brohm players than Hazell players.
