After completing a perfect run through Pool play at the World University Games PurdUeSA has qualified for the Championship playoffs. As mentioned earlier this week, the top two teams in each pool moved on to the championship round. That makes the schedule as follows for the quarterfinals on Sunday:
Quarterfinal 1: Serbia vs. Finland 3am ET
Quarterfinal 2: United States vs. Israel 3am ET
Quarterfinal 3: Germany vs. Latvia 5:30am ET
Quarterfinal 4: Argentina vs. Lithuania 5:30am ET
The United States and Germany were the only two teams to make it through pool play undefeated at 5-0. The German beat Canada 85-73 this morning to move to 5-0. That makes them the favorite in that half of the draw, but don’t count out Lithuania. Lithuania beat Russia today 112-71 to tie for Group D with Israel. In our half of the draw Serbia was the Pool A winner after beating the hosts in the final pool play game. They were 4-1, but lost to Mexico.
As for Israel, they were 4-1 with wins over Ukraine, Australia, Mozambique, and Russia. Their games with Australia and Ukraine were close, as they won those two by seven total points. they have shot 40% from three and 52% from the floor, so they will test us defensively.
The semifinals would be Monday at 12:30am and 3am ET, with the Gold medal game on Tuesday at approximately 8am ET. I don’t know of any streaming information just yet, but as we hear stuff we will publish it in our Twitter feed as well as in the Game Threads we have posted.
