Today’s player is one of the true freshmen that played last season, but was lost in the shuffle a little. He has shifted between positions and his contributions this coming season are a bit of a mystery.
Jack Wegher – So.
Sioux City, SD (IMG Academy)
5’10”, 205 pounds
Running Back
2017 Projection: Special Teams Contributor
Wegher attended the prestigious IMG Academy in Florida, which is basically a sports factory high school where athletes train for college, but still get a solid education. They regularly have 4- and 5-star prospects. He was a running back there primarily, but he also played wide receiver. He had 71 carries for 646 yards and 13 TDs to go with 10 receptions for 137 yards and 2 more scores.
That led to him enrolling early and going through spring practice. He then saw the field as a reserve in a few spots. He played in six games, getting 4 carries for a net of -5 yards, including a critical 4th down stuff at Minnesota when injuries had him in at running back. He also caught 2 passes for 37 yards. In the return game he had a single kick return for 19 yards.
Headed into this year he looks to be stuck behind a crowded backfield, but he could be used as a kickoff returner. He also had a single special teams tackle in 2016.
